Would anybody have an idea as to what temp an ar-15 non-fluked barrel 16" would get, say in semi-auto I shot 15-20 as fast as possible?

I would test this my self with my IR temp reader but my barrel is not installed as am working on several things and sadly i have only one ar-15

A guy I know bump-shoots his Colt 7.63x39, and all I can say is the barrel gets so hot it smokes. I would not try it myself, just because it looks kinda dumb. So to answer your question, I can't really give you a temp, but if it smokes it must be pretty hot.

If you'll indulge me, I'm curious as to why the temp. matters? What will you do differently, if you get an answer that's 50*, one way or the other?

I don't bump-fire, as I consider that to be truly pubescent, but I do fire rapidly at times..sometimes as many as thirty shots. My barrel gets pretty hot, but I've never noticed it smoking, nor have I noticed any ill effects. I've also shot my AR f.a. at times, with the result being a pretty hot barrel...again, no problems that I can see.

I use a DPMS non-vented free-float tube. I've never had the tube get so hot that I couldn't "grab" it.
