View Full Version : G21 range report
I took my G21 out and fired 800 rounds through it yesterday. I loved it. Didn't have one misfire (american eagle & winchester) not one problem with it. Even after several hundred rounds and with 2 different brands of ammo, which are real dirty, that gun kept firing. I got rid of a Kimber last year because at around 200 rounds the slide would not close so I had to stop and clean the gun and oil it thoroughly and then continue for another 150 to 200 rounds. But not my G21. I put 800 rounds through it and it was so dirty you couldn't see the front sight, but it kept firing. Of course I did clean it very thoroughly before I left. Thank you Glock for such a fine product.
I'm with you RTA! I took my new G21 with me to the range today. Put another 200 rounds of WWB through it. It was it's second time out. It was flawless! Can't exactly say the same for my accuracy but uhhh...well...I can work on that.;f
I'm another fan of the reliability of the 21. The 1911 bug bit me but the swelling has gone down and the 21 is back on my side.
dougmc and RTA, your on to something. The 1911 bug bit me but I went and got rid of it. I know it is next to slander to talk negatively about the 1911 but unless something happens, I can't control, I am through with this type of pistol. My Glock will shoot circles around my now traded 1911's. I have had a Glock I traded but not due to function. I know every gunsmith in the country must love the 1911's, if I were trying to make a living working on guns, that is the first thing I would learn to fix. A Glock is about the only pistol I have ever run across that will run thousands of rounds right from the box, shoot better groups than most can hold and should it break you can fix it without needing a degree and a box of tools. See Ya

That Kimber may have just been breaking in (was it new?) the original Colt .45 of the Army tests, way back in 1910 before ANY of the improvements to the design went 6,000 rounds straight without a jam, misfeed, stoppage or break of any part. 1911s can do great work, but if it's brand new (especially some of the newer really-tight-fitting ones) give it a couple hundred rounds to break in.
I'm not surprised at the reliability but I am suprised at the amount of ammo you ran through the gun. Even at sale prices, thats about $130 worth of ammo and my sight picture would be more than a little shaky. Don

Yeah, even though I only shoot my reloads, I still hate to reflect on the cost of my having put well over 100,000 rounds through my Glocks. At least 10,000 of those rounds were .400 Cor-Bon, with another couple of thousand .40 Super.

Yeah it was new. Someone else told me about the breaking in period. The first time at the range with that kimber I put 500 rounds through it. That's when I notice the problem. The second time I shot 300 rounds through it with still the same problem. The third time out I tried another 500 rounds and still kept having the same problem. So I got rid of it. I had my G21 already and never had any problems with it.
I know I'm gonna catch some heat but I've gotta tell you I bought a Rock Island 45 and after 1500 rounds through it, I've never had a problem with it.
DonD, my wrist was a little sore but my thumb was really giving me the most problem. I guess since the mags sit in the safe all the time the springs don't get worn and the ninth and tenth round are a little tough to get in. Not all rounds were from the aim and shoot position. As a LEO I have always tried different shooting positions. Some of the shooting consisted of drawing from the holster and shooting from the waist. Some consisted of drawing from holster and shooting from chest level without aiming but just pointing gun from the 5 yard line.
As for the money, well yes it does get expensive but I love to shoot. But I just found out that our Police Academy is selling the ammo at a cheaper price than I could buy anywhere else. So I guess I'll be doing some more shooting.

First thing I'd do if I bought a Kimber would be to replace the extractor with a Wilson Bullet Proof extractor or something of Wilson's quality. Kimber's are notorious for being shipped with inadequate extractor tension.
RTA, I extend my appreciation for your service in law enforcement, get'em before they get you! I haven't shot frequently enough to shoot anything like that amount of ammo and not get the hand tremors. Beyond say 200rds, I'm not getting accuracy practice. I still have fun but its just blasting away. With my 500 Mag, that number is more like 60rds of a mix of moderate and monster loads. Don ;f
