View Full Version : Just put Wolff guide rod and 22# spring in my G21
Jeebus !!!!
I didn't anticipate so much trouble getting the damned thing in (non-captured), and did launch the guide rod across the living room at one point.
The slide is now so stiff that my fiancee' is going to have trouble racking it. I chambered a round with no trouble (although it felt like I wasn't able to pull it far enough back).
I'm gonna leave it compressed until next week, and then try it again.
I picked up a standard 17# spring at the same time, so worst case scenario isn't that bad - I can just go to it, but I'm wondering if my 230gr HS and 230 gr Winchester White Box will function properly with the 22# spring?
I did this so I could shoot +P EFMJ and .45 Super, but am now wondering if the 21 will function mormally with my range ammo.

Tommy,
I'm not hi-jacking your thread, but wanted to let you know that I started a topic on recoil springs, and if you want to post there as well, it may double our efforts to find answers.

Not a problem.
Just wanted to gripe about how much my thumbs hurt right now, and was just kinda wondering aloud "Is this right?"

Go shoot a box of ammo or 2. 50 to 100 rounds "set in"
time is what Wolff claims.
Go shoot it, I hope you enjoy your new spring!

I've had a lot of experience in experimenting with recoil spring weights for my G21's. I'd suggest a 20# spring for everyday use; the 22# (or 24#) for .45 Super.

Will I have any problems with my 230gr target loads if I leave the 22# spring in?

Doubt it. I have a 21# spring in my G30 and have no problems with any bullet so far. I can't see the G21 and one more pound making any difference.
Take your old springs to the range and shoot the heck out of it. If there's a problem field strip it and put the old springs back in.

Yeah,go out and shoot a few hundred rounds using the 22# spring, just be aware that the heavier spring will make your G21 more senstive to bad grip/limpwristing. If your G21 is ejecting brass four-to-five feet, then you're o.k. If the slide speed is slowed such that the brass is barely being ejected, then you either need a lighter spring or a heavier load.
Thanks guys, much appreciated!
I'll be going to the range this weekend and I'll let you know.
My G21 always did throw brass too hard, and this might be the answer to both my problems.

Sorry - forgot to follow-up.
Took 230gr FMJ Winchester white box range ammo, 230 gr Hydra-shoks, and bought a box of Cor-Bon 165gr +P (only +P ammo the gun shop had).
Everything fired perfectly, and the Winchester white box fired so soft it was like a .38. Took a couple of mags for me to adjust my grip for the softer recoil, but I was shooting butterflies again before I left the range.
Analysis:
22# is *not* too heavy for any 230gr ammo, and G21s ARE undersprung (sorry, Gaston). I have never been more pleased with a purchase in my life.
The GT'er I went to the range with had fired my G21 stock, and was also amazed at the difference. He also said the Cor-Bon scared him going off, and I didn't much like the amount of muzzle flash myself.
Anyone want to buy a 17# Wolff non-captured spring?
;f

Tommy: Thanks for the follow-up. I did experience a few problems when using a 22# spring, but I was only shooting my reloads, and sometimes I load pretty mild stuff for the range. My feelings about the perceived recoil with a heavier-than-stock spring are exactly what you're experiencing. There's a school of thought, however, that lighter-than-stock springs, increasing the slide speed, lower perceived recoil. That has just not been my experience. I really think that Wolff Springs' guidelines are right-on-the-money.
BTW: Save that 17# spring; you just might find a use for it. :)
I have a 22# spring on a Wolff non-captured rod and love it. It's been a very mild shooter so far with Speer 200 gr +P and 230 gr Gold Dots and Speer 230 gr Lawman which tend to be a little hot. The heavier spring definitely made a big difference in perceived recoil.
