View Full Version : The Kalashnikov club.

This is just an idea I have, I could moderate part time, but there will need to be a full-time mod with knowledge of the kalashnikov design (I know a little, but don't expect me to tell you anything on the operation/take down)
I could mod for content, and possibly 2 other mods for everything else...
So, we need 49 more for the Avtomat Kalashnikova Obrazets 1947 club!

Right after the Kimber, the Springfield WWII Pankerized 1911, the Sig 229, Sig p232, Ruger Blackhawk, the Bushmaster AR-15, the .357 magnum Stub-Nosed revolver, the Mossberg 590, and the Luger

I'm in. I have a Saiga 7.62x39 that I will be converting soon! I want an AR as well but don't have the cash at the moment. I was hoping we would have a place for AKs. I thought that the black rifle club would include all homeland defense weapons but they only want AR posts their. I guess it is best to have our own club! I like the Kalashnikov Klub as a name.
I'm all for it! Got a SAR-1 and 2 in the stable now.;f

Tom, you should get your Kalashnikov before you get all those high-priced toys.
1. You wait for those things first, you're never getting an AK.
2. You can shoot the AK all day long for CHEAP. 1000 rounds of 7.62x39mm goes for about $110, or $90 if your're more patient than me.
3. Unlike those other guns you list, you never have to clean an AK. ;f
4. There are an untold number of add-ons and accessories for the AK, from furniture to triggers to peep sights to slings to buffers to everything else.
5. You get a rifle that you can kinda squint and pretend that you're fnfalman with his rifles (and you get to make fun of people with Mattel Toys).

Whats a good cheap AK then? SAR-1, WASR-10, or Mak90? I'm going to a gun show on the 28th, time to start saving up some $$$$ ;f
fnfalman
02-28-2004, 17:15
The cheapest is the SAR-1 though the MAK-90 is just right there as well. The thing with the MAK-90 is that you get a better finished AK but you have to deal with the thumbhole stock. Of course, you can swap out enough American parts on the MAK-90 so that it can also have the pistol grip and stock as well.

What he said. I got an SAR-1 and I love it. I hate thumbhole stocks, but like fn said you can replace the grip with a screwdriver and five minutes.
Take $300 to the gun show and leave with an AK.

its not that its ugly tom but everybody that i have talked to, including myself, find it uncomfortable as can be! if someone wanted to take the time and reshape the thumbhole it would be ok. see there is a rather sharp seam that rides right on your thumb joint. its just annoying

I dont own AK-47 but am shopping for one .
I have a feeling it won't be the last .
Got sights set on Arsenal/Bulgarian SLR101S series and SAM-7 ones .
The Romanian SAR-1 are a nice price but a few people have begged me to re-consider and buy better telling me i'll be glad I did later on .
Any thoughts on this ?
;P
Yea my thoughts are an ak is an ak pretty much.....If you already have a SAR-1 then get a more expensive one.....but lets be honest these guns are not percision target rifles....they are not ARs they are however very reliable and dependable.....they won't win an award for their craftsmanship...or beauty...I would get an SAR and if you love it then later on get a nicer rifle to take care of and what not....but an AK was built to be abused and used, its a tool. If a wal-mart screw driver will work just fine....do you really need a 25 dollar "Snap On" screw driver if you're just gona use it to pry on Shyt?

It wins awards for design, not for craftsmanship, that's for sure.
The AK is the perfect "truck gun". Throw it in the back of the cab.
The AR is the perfect "Humvee gun"

I just started looking seriously at AK's today. I would love to have a forum to learn more about them. There's so many different kinds. Which one should i get and how much should i pay? I read that the KBI Hungarian AK47 (SA85M)is one of the best (at AK47.net). My local shop has one for $450 (including a few mags i think). Should i go for it?

May have to get a VEPR or other more expensive Bulgarian/American unit, oh well ..
I was looking forward to customizing the Sar-1 however with the red star triggering parts and blackjack recoil buffer and polymer stock parts or maybe just re-finishing the existent wood 'furniture' .
I have just spent the last hour reading all the posts and it's great that it's such a unified group amongst Glock-ers even ...

KeroScene,
Try Classic Arms for an SAR1. Two of us just got new ones from them this past week.
http://www.classicarms.us/htm/firearms.htm
However, I did just check that website and the SARs are no longer listed. As a second choice I would contact Arsenal USA/Global Trades and see if they have any Bulgarian/US or others on hand. I know they are expecting more in about a month.
I just got back from the range after having my new SAR out. The night I got it I put in a Tapco FCG I got from BlackJack Buffers. I really like the trigger. Good, consistent pull and breaks about 4lbs with almost no slack.
Good luck on your hunt.
Cheers!

I know, other people do these posts asking which to get but here goes mine :
Sar-1's getting hard to find ... but .. cheap ...but FCG needs replacing as does recoil buffer and perhaps stock set ...
VEPR-K was called by a gunshop owner near me "the Cadillac of AK's"
It's Russian, a new design and doesn't need all kinds of parts upgraded from the get-go like Sar's ... Many are available ...
Looks great too ...
Then there's the many Arsenal-AK's ... expensive however ...but many available ...
SO ... I wonder what you all think ??? Keep saving money for the better ones ?
Any of you own VEPR-K's and have praises for them ??
Any of you have extensive experience shooting/repairing all of the aforementioned and have a good view on pros and cons of all of these ??
Please reply ... don't want to invest in the wrong one ...in any case, it's not chump change for me...

All are about same price give or take some change ...
Anyone shot all of them or have good idea (objectively) of all of these ???

i'm leaning more and more towards a VEPR-K 7.62 ...
it's about $50-70 less than the SAM-7 and according to some locals, a better AK overall and particularly a more accurate barrel and so on .
but i'm still up to your insights and suggestions ...
i don't care really if it doesn't look as 'evil' as the SAM-7 and SSR's ...

That's my only problem with Veprs...they don't have the traditional AK "look". Other than that I've heard all good things about them. For my money though my next AK is going to be an SSR-56 or SSR-85 from Arsenal & Global Trades in Houston.

Cheers!

I have a MAK-91, so count me in too!
At the moment it still has the ugly dark thumbhole stock, but I've ordered a Choate Dragunov style replacement that should be here next week. Once I have that backup in place, I'm going to try refinishing and reshaping the original furniture.

It looks like we have more than 50 members interested.
Is anybody following up on this?

that SSR-85c-2 is looking good and I can get either one of those or a VEPR-k in 7.62 for same price ($500) ... the SSR is tempting but i'm leaning towards the Russkie. I like it's updated design and stock/furniture . I'll probably get one of each, budget allowing !
me lik AK's 2! I'm not out!

After going to Ukraine this summer, and learning the rifle from a country that's had them since the USSR did, I vote yes.
Resoundingly yes!;f

Nice, Michigun! I'm not familiar with the scope mount...you get a clear sight picture, that far forward? Just curious, didn't know you could do that!
This site has a lot of very knowledgeable AK builders
If you want to know anything about a AK, this is the place.
