F-16s Intercept Small Plane Near Bush Ranch
Fri Apr 9, 4:37 PM ET Add Politics - Reuters to My Yahoo!

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - U.S. F-16 fighter jets intercepted a small plane flying near President Bush (news - web sites)'s ranch on Friday.

The plane landed at an airport at San Marcos, Texas, and Secret Service agents were interviewing the pilot.

"There was a violation. The fighters did respond," said Ann Roman, a Secret Service spokeswoman in Washington.

She said Bush was never in any danger. Bush and his family are spending the Easter holiday weekend at the central Texas ranch.

You know what... I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone like this. There has been SO much attention paid to TFRs since 9-11 that something like this is inexcusable (if it's a valid TFR bust). AOPA sends me an email everytime Bush is anywhere in the state and here's an example...

AOPA ePilot Special Airspace Bulletin April 2, 2004
---------------------------------------------------------------------

A special notice to AOPA members in and near central Texas

==> ATTENTION PILOTS <==

RESTRICTED AREA TO EXPAND OVER BUSH RANCH BEGINNING MONDAY
AOPA is sending this message to advise pilots planning to fly in the area between Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin, Texas, that the restricted area surrounding President Bush's Crawford ranch, Prohibited Area P-49, will expand beginning Monday evening.

The temporary flight restriction (TFR) will extend to a 30-nm radius below 18,000 feet msl, beginning at 6:30 p.m. local time on Monday, April 5, and continuing through 4:30 p.m. local on Monday, April 12. General aviation flight operations are prohibited within 10 nm of the TFR's center. Affected airports are Valley Mills Municipal (9F1), Wildcat Canyon (3T8), McGregor Executive (PWG), Clifton Municipal/Isenhower Field (7F7), Waco Regional (ACT), City-County (05F), Lake Whitney State Park (F50), TSTC Waco (CNW),
Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional (TPL), and Wings For Christ
International Flight Academy (73F). See AOPA Online for the full text of the notam ( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#4/2740 ).

Also, based on previous presidential travel, AOPA anticipates a smaller TFR over TSTC Waco Airport (CNW) to facilitate multiple arrivals and departures throughout the April 5 through 12 period. AOPA will post the notam on AOPA Online as soon as it becomes available. See ( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html ).

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight. TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.

With all this info available to you, how can you possibly "not know"? ;Q

Just like the CCW idiots that shoot when they shouldn't and give gun owners a bad name, pilots like this only contribute to the public's misconceptions about GA. :(

Presidential TFR aside do you believe that all these other TFRs will actually stop anything???? We have 4 in Puget Sound. By the time I diverted into the TFR with bad intentions they would have no way to respond to my action.

Its more feel good legislation that just ends up harrassing innocent folks.:)

Agreed. All these TFR's are a useless PITA. However, I agree with Texas T: there's no excuse for not knowing about them.

We have the "old" Bush here in Maine and there is as well a 30 mile zone around his house when he is home. You can fly IFR or VFR with prior permission and flight following through this zone. Portland is right in the zone and a lot of other places!
I know a few peolpe who got into trouble, but no one I know had the F16 next to / behind them!

I know a few peolpe who got into trouble, but no one I know had the F16 next to / behind them! Anyone got a current sectional for the Houston area? Bush Sr lives here most of the year and I was wondering if there is a restricted area over his residence which I think is in the Memorial area.

If there is NOT, then why would there be a TFR when he's visiting Maine?

I have a current Houston sectional at home. I don't recall there being a restricted area, but I'll check later this evening.

Ok, I just had a look at the sectional and the only restricted area in that part of the woods is over Matagorda (ground to 15K). That appears to be the result of an INS balloon in the area...

Okay, so then that brings up the original question... if there is no restriction over his Houston home why would there be one over the Maine home?

The only thing I can think of is that Bush Jr was visiting at the time.

Perhaps that was the time that Dubya fell off the Segway because it wasn't turned on yet?
