View Full Version : 'Click' - What do you do do help predict when you're empty?

On an AK magazine?
That's the one thing that I've been trying to figure a solution upon.
If you're at the range, and you pull the trigger and hear a 'click', no big deal.
But if you're in the thick of it in a nightmare scenario, that would REALLY suck.
Has anyone figured out a system to overcome this problem and help predict when your magazine is about to run out?

You can put some BHO, (Bolt Hold Open), mag followers in your mags. You can get them here http://www.blackjackbuffers.com/bjbcatalog3.html. Also, you can load like 3 to 5 tracer rounds in first. When you start seeing the tracers get ready to reload.

Thanks for that link.
And excellent idea about the tracers, too. ^c

For range trips I don't worry about it, for SHTF mags, five tracers go in first, once four are gone, it's time to reload or transition to a sidearm.

The Poly Tech mags have holes in the back of the mag (like Glock mags) at 30,20,10, and 5. If you have alot of patience and a drill press you could put the holes in any mags you own.
Just my $0.02!

Because the bolt sounds totally different when it closes on an empty chamber? That's the way I know I'm out, but when the SHTF probably not a good method of knowing your out. Do these followers work reliably?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the bolt go forward once you remove the mag? If so, you still have to charge the weapon once a loaded mag is inserted.

Do tracers have the same ballistic effect as regular ammo?
If you are defending your own house, are tracers an issue?

Indeed, a good question.
I assume they do have the ballistics. The only difference would be that what they're coated with - I think...
Nonetheless, in a home defensive situation, which I'd be reluctant to use my AK for anyways (overpenetration issues), but which is possible, it would be really interesting to be firing tracer rounds inside my house at some bad guys in the dark.
The problem with tracers is they let the bad guy know a) where you are, and b) that you're out of ammo. ;f

I don't think you can see tracers when they're coming at you pointy-end first. I could be mistaken.

Yes they are, some say the best steel mag IMO. I have not seen any around, don't know what they run, theier cousin the Norinco mags have the holes at 30 rnds that's it, they run any where from $6.95 to $19.99. Depends where your lookin.
