some poeple report having problems with the m series pistols in that they eject the brass on top of thier heads. my #27000 M9 does this sometimes (less so now that its getting broken in). people say to buy a new extractor and swap it in. my question is: what is the difference between the old one and the new one? can the old one be modified so it more resembles the new style extractor? anyone have pics of both to compare?

I just bought a extractor for my M40 and a 357. I saw no difference in the one I took off my early M40 (pre 10XXX series ) and the new extractors. I bet the size/ exterior demensions are all the same. The extractor inside claw was visibiliy worn and I wonder if they (steyrusa) provide some type of better hardness on the newer ones.

BTW: the brass back into the face problem, whent away after about 500-800 rounds of being broken.

If I were you I would just where a hat and some safety glasses. A little brass won't hurt you.(unless it goes down you shirt)

A little brass does hurt elsewhere--my wife was shooting her M-9 and a piece of brass lodged between her cheek and eyeglass frame. Luckily the burn which was the shape of the "empty" side of the case did not scar. Didn't stop her though, put another 200 rds thru the M-9 that day. Incidentally this happened on her first day of breaking in the brand new M-9.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I had a burn mark on my right temple for weeks afterward. I stopped shooting the gun in frustration after hundreds of rounds of brass hitting me in the head. This weekend I installed a new extractor. There was a noticeable, but unfortunately not 100%, improvement. Out of 100 rounds (Wally World Win. White box), only one hit me in the head, one from the first mag fired. Maybe 20% (about 2 per mag) landed on my right shoulder and the rest ejected to the right or straight up. Otherwise, no malfunctions of any sort - 100% reliability.

The new ejector assembly looked exactly like the old one. Before the new extractor, the problem seemed to get worse the more I fired the gun. I am the second owner of this gun so I don't know how it fired when new, but I think that just removing the ejector and cleaning the channel may be what really solved the problem. We'll see how it works with continued use.

i do not know if there are replacement main springs that are stronger or not. I would most definatly be interested in em. the main spring it comes with feels a little weak.

anyone know if they are available?

We shoot Igman 124 gr and WWB thru the wifes M9. It seems to be getting broke in better now. My problem is this--- the dealer where I bought the M9 has offered me a M40 with night sights for $350 out the door. I am having a hard time deciding whether to get this or an XD 40. Help Please!

When I was shopping for a .40, I tried a number of different weapons. the Glocks, the XD's, Beretta's, and I ended up with the Steyr. The XD is nice too. I liked the balance, and it shot OK. But, within the first 50 rounds I had 3 assorted failures, which killed it for me. Sure, it was a crappy rental piece, but none of the other crappy rentals had any failures. Between the XD and the Steyr, I'll take the Steyr any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

My M40 is VERY early (in fact it had the old style trigger but the previous owner send it in for the upgrade) my serial number is in the 5600 range.

I've never had any ejection problems ... all the shells go up and to the right and land about 8-10 feet behind me at about 4 o'clock.

Everyone knows I am a big Steyr fan. I have a M40 M9, and S40 that I use as a carry piece. I recently found a great deal on an XD40 with 4 mags. At the time I was looking for a good gun to use for shooting in my clubs IPSC event. I was going to use my S40, but was having allot of trouble finding a goor holster that would work for competitive shooting. I got the XD40 for $360 FTF from a guy here in WI. First time I started shooting it I could't believe how light the triggers was!! It is the first gun I have ever shot that has a trigger pull as good as my Steyr. IMHO the two guns are almost equal. There are things that I like about each gun. Since we all have Steyrs I will touch on what I like about the XD.
Excellant trigger
Chamber indicator
Cocked indicator
Mag release is very easy
Standard front rail
Grip is very solid not cheap feeling like other polymer guns
Grip safety BIG BONUS
The reason I am such big fan of the grip safety is because the other night it saved me from having a ND. It was late and I had jusst finished cleaning my XD. I use my XD as a my home defense weapon because I just bought a M6 light and laser unit that mounts on the front. I had loaded mag and inserted into the gun, I chambered a round, and then topped off the mag. As I was leaving my gun room in the basement I remembered that I had left some stuff in the pathway to the stairs. Since all the lights were out I decided to use the M6 to illuminate my path. For some reason the M6 was set to off so I was having trouble getting it to work. In my tired state my mind decided that to get the light to come on I should pull the trigger!!! I know that sounds crazy, but thats what I did.

The good news is I was not holding on to the frame properly so the grip safety was not engaged.(thank God) The trigger was pulled all the way to the rear and stopped. At that point it started to register in my mind what had happened. I put the gun down and sat down in a chair. I probably sat there in the dark for 10 minutes analyzing what I had just done. It scared me to think that I had almsot shot my gun in the basement while my wife was upstairs sleeping. I am now so thankful for the grip safety. The gun was pointed in a safe direction and would not have shot anything except the wall and maybe my computer desk.

I like Steyrs and XDs. Steyr is still my fav, but I sure like those XDs.

I posted a thread awhile back (http://glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=205257&highlight=steyr) about getting SS guide rods made for the Steyr so that springs could be swapped out...maybe now would be a good time to revive it

sounds like a good idea. I know a guy that has his own engineering firm. He can get everything built, but I would need a at least 50 or more to make it worthwhile. I guess a big chunk of the cost is programming and setting up the CNC machines. Its been awhile, but I think he said something like 300 or so for a 50 unit run

I was wishing earlier that the guide rod was more serviceable...

I believe it is early.

Let me know about the stainless guide rod thing if it works out, im interested!

Also, I had FTEs once every 20 or so rounds today (usually when the gun was hot). My serial number is in the 20ks. Do you guys think ordering a new extractor will help it out or do I need to put more rounds in her? (I got 370 so far).

yes now is a great time to organize something. a M and S series guide rod would be great. I was thinking of contacting the guy that does the XD guide rods over at www.hs2000talk.com the HS2000/XD forum. if not them maybe try wolff or see if we cannot find someone.

organize a group buy. I could see myself buying 4 guide rods and springs if they spec right and work properly. might tame recoil bit more wouldnt that be freaky.

Have you done anything about contacting him? Im gunna contact him to show him my interest. Also going to contact Wolff to see if they can get us some springs. Can we change out trigger connectors on the Steyr like a Glock? If so anyone know of anyone who may be interested in making some new ones in lighter weights?
