Well I bought myself a Romanian SAR-1, this is my first and I have a few questions. Which mags would be better blue steel Romanian (sportsmansguide) or synthetic manufactured for the Polish special forces (aimsurplus)? As far as ammo which seems to work better Russian Sapsan or Wolf, HP or FMJ? Thanks for all the info. Also recoil buffers are they important? And if so which would work better Black or Green.

And on a side note about a year ago when I was in between an AR and an AK you guys were right id end up with both lol.

Thank You,
James

I found that I tend to like the metal mags better. The plastic ones are lighter but with the bigger 7.62 round they tend to get out of whack some times. As far as ammo any Russian will work. I have used Sapsan, Wolf, and Silver bear with good luck. I will say the fmj are a little more reliable than the hp's. And as buffers go I have not used them and have heard no so good things about people using them in Ak's for what it's worth.

thanks for the info, the only thing i am worried about the metal ones are rust. the weight doesnt seem to be a concern i doubt i would ever have to carry it much.

I have a variety of AK mags. The only ones that have ever rusted are the orange fiberglass mags for the 7.62 - the floor plate rusts easily.

Go with the metal mags.

i use the metal mags, the east german thirty round mags are on the cheaper than dirt web site for ten dollars a piece the romanians are good too i never used the plastic mags so i cant help there. as far as ammo is concerned OUSOONER covered the basics. and about the recoil buffers i have the black ones installed on my sars and they quiet the action a little and will extend the life of your receiver if you shoot alot, but i did hear some scuttlebut about the buffers being finicky in some ak rifles,i never had a problem as of yet but time will tell and on that note............welcome to the ak world, good rifle, good reliabilty, and a damn good time;c ;c ;c

Metal mags all the way. Beware of 40 rd mags: if you ever use a bipod the 40 rounder's won't fit, they'll hit the dirt.

I have a green buffer, no biggie but really not necessary. It's stood up well to 1000 rds but I don't think it's really necessary. I think it was a good marketing idea.

I like the bolt-hold-open followers for magazines, might get those. They hold the action open when the mag's empty.

Get a good ammo can and buy lots of ammo.

My guess would be the same point of having one on a FA AK? Because it only shoots one round per trigger pull it somehow dissolves the need, or want, for a buffer? If I bump fire every mag I ever put into my AK is it somehow taking less abuse than an FA AK?
