I just ran across this while searching for info on this gun. I may buy a Chinese one very soon for about $80 or so. I just borrowed it and will shoot it this weekend.

SKS review at surplusrifle.com (http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/sks/index.asp)

What kind of groups can I expect from an SKS? I know it is a loose combat rifle, and I don't expect MOA accuracy, but I would like my shots to go where I put them. Can I expect under 3" at 100 yards?

3 inches at 100 yds is probably possible with an SKS but I'd rate it as highly unlikely. I've never benchrested either of mine though and I've only shot Wolf or other steel cased commie ammo since I don't trust the floating firing pin coupled with softer primers in commercial 7.62 X 39. You have to keep in mind that this rifle was designed to be minute of man, and at that it excells.......I can put 20 out of 20 into a standard sized pistol target at 100 yds with either of mine. Best groups I've ever gotten, with 3 shots mind you, were just over 3 inches with a cold rifle, the more you shoot it, the less accurate it gets as it heats up. Buy the rifle, you'll love it or I'll buy it from you for $85 plus shipping. ;f

The best groups I ever got with an SKS were in the 3 inch range with Lapua ammo. Using Russian ammo, the groups hang in the 4.5 to 6 inch range. Not a tack driver, but good enough for the intended purpose.

Even with reloads, I've seldom produced anything smaller than 4 inches. They're great rifles and cheap to shoot.

Was that with a scope? 3" groups with iron sights is pretty impressive. I have a scope coming with my SKS and I hope that makes a difference.

Sooner or later, I will probably buy a set of dies and some components to see how much better I can make it shoot, hehehe. I will be happy with 3" though.

It'll make a difference for about the first 3 or 4 shots, then it will lose its zero, especially if it's a receiver cover scope mount. I get the same groups with or without a scope on my Chicoms.
