View Full Version : NIB MAK-90, need parts

First off, what little I knew about AKs was lost a long time ago. I used to have a MAK-90 back around '93-'94 but didn't have it long.
Today I was at a local gunstore and they had a NIB MAK-90 (the plastic bag the rifle was in inside the styrofoam box had never even been opened) for only $300 with all accessories. Appearantly a guy was in big to the IRS and needed some extra money. He also had 2 preban COLT ARs, a Russion Dragonuv, and a Chinese .223 AK that was identical to the MAK-90 for consignment.
Anyhoo, what I'd like to do is put a standard style pistol grip and stock on this MAK-90. Where can I find someone that has a kit or whatever I need to do this? Also, is it possible, or legal, to put an underfolding wire stock on the MAK-90? Any other accessories you'd recommend? I'd kinda like to deck this thing out some.
Thanks for the help.

Underfolder wont be legal with detachable hi-cap mags, until the ban sunsets this september. To legally go about adding a pistol grip, you need 5 us parts to remain legal.

you have a stamped receiver (not a milled receiver).

^ pretty sure that would fit.
note: you need a longer screw to go through the pistol grip. the factory screw is too short.
Like was said above, if it is a stamped receiver (most were) with no muzzle device, you'll need 5 US parts for the conversion.
If it's a milled MAK, then you need 4 US parts, but your options become more limited because of the lack of replacement stocks for that variant.

Good price on a good rifle. Do you know what he wanted on the other rifles?

The two Colts were when the ARs came with flashhiders but Colt started removing the bayonet lugs, early '90s era I believe. Both were $1350 iirc. The Dragonuv was $1395 iirc. The .223 Mak 90 was also $345, which was the tag price of the MAK-90 I got before I got him to give me a better deal.
On replacing my stock.....after I get the required number of US parts to be able to replace my stock, will any special hardware still be needed or will it come with the replacement stock I buy? Thats my main concern, having all the parts when I need them. Thanks guys.

make sure you have a screw to go through the pistol grip that is longer than the factory one you have now.
the screw did not come with my stock set from K-VAR.
as far as tools needed, i think just a flat head screw driver, though taking the heat shield thing off the top of the forend is a serious pain IIRC.

So you basically got screwed! ;e
I can't find my previous thread about this, you might try a search.
Mak90's come with 2 types of stamped recievers, the square and the slant cut. Make sure you take off the thumbhole and check to see what you have.
NOTE: Please e-mail me with contact info for the shop as I would like to immediately purchase the .223 MAK-90. I have been wanting one for a while now. I even have a stash of mags and accesssories already.

David_G17 and Hines57,
Thanks for the info. I did a search in NonGlock firearms the other day and think I saw the article you were referring to. I'm stationed away from home right now and won't be able to check the receiver again till next week maybe. I took the stock off when I got the Mak90 and saw the cut of the receiver, I believe it was square cut. I just need to get around to ordering a replacement for it. I also didn't want to order it, get all excited about putting it on, and then realize I didn't have a proper screw or something else. Thanks again for the info.
TED,

Don't get in a tizzy if you get your replacement stock and it doesn't fit. Chinese receivers are slightly thicker (1.5mm vs. 1mm) than their European counterparts and will require some fitting (sanding of the sides of the stock that goes into the receiver, about 0.5mm on each side), unless you get a stock specifically designed for the MAK.

Thanks glklvr. My brother has experience with wood stocks because of his Garand, .30 Carbines, and M1As so fitting shouldn't be an issue. I was thinking more of the hardware.

so easy.wood stock, forward hand hold and pistol grip equal 3 us parts.simply replace the followers and springs in the mags to get you 5 us made peices.better yet get used to how cool the mak90 butthole stock looks, especially with a 70 round drum.
Glklvr, please send me that e-mail with the contact info one more time. I have a high security setting on my e-mail and it got filtered out as junk mail. I tried to move it to another folder but fumble fingered it and hit the purge button instead.
I really wnat to buy that .223 AK, so PLEASE, e-mail me the contact info again. Sorry.
THANK YOU!!

Ted, email sent again.
BTW, I did indeed buy that thing and I have been enjoying it ever since. Ultra reliable. Still haven't cleaned, and I might not bother.
