I am 15 and am looking for something to do with all the money I am going to be getting after school ends. I have alot of experience with an HK USP and a Beretta Vertec, both .40 S&W, as well as various .22 Bolt-Action rifles. Just today I shot my first AK-47 and was surprised at how such a cheap gun felt so cool. It was some kinda of Maadi or something like that. 25 yards and got really crappy groups, but hey it was my first time. Anyway, the event left me wondering in the back of my head if I should get one of these, considering my dad will let me. So I did some quick browsing on the net and found that I want to get a Romainian SAR-1 Model. My questions are the following:
-Any good sites on field-stripping/cleaning
-Is this a good model, or should I get another?
-How about getting new grips? I want some good looking cherry wood grips, but I have no idea where to get them or how much they cost.

Well that about sums it up, and I look forward to all the good feedback. Thanks!

A good site for info on the Romanian SAR 1 is http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/index.shtml

If your dad gives his OK for you have a SAR 1, be sure to get one that that has at least a 2003 manufacture date. Prior to 2003, there were some sight and gas block problems with the SAR 1.

This site, www.gunsnstuff.net, has pretty good pricing on the 7.62X39 ammo (assuming that's the caliber you choose).

WASR-10 Romanian AK hi-cap is cheaper (got one for $289 2 months ago with a 30- and 40-round mag) and more plentiful at this time than SAR-1s.

The WASR-10 has had a few problems with magazines being loose. Not common, but they do occur. I would personally get a SAR-1.

I'm 15 aswell, and an AK is either next or second on my list. Being behind some sort of .357 magnum revolver. Either a single action Ruger, or possibly a Stub-nosed 5 shot.

If you save up a little longer, you can get an AR-15.

I too am interested in an AK. My question is:

How easy are these guns to clean?

I mechanically stupid, and i can clean them without a problem. There are only about 5 parts that I pay attention to, and i've never had any problems.

I can clean it in about 5 mins, if im in a rush. 10 if i take my time. VERY simple.

clean an ak????? ha ha ha an ak-47 comes with a cleaning rod and kit but the gun rarely if ever needs to be cleaned except if your ammo is corrosive(but i clean my rifles regulary and efficently, i was brought up that way) i heard that in trials the rifles fired over a 80,000 rounds without a failure or being cleaned, now thats here say so take that for whats it worth, but i do know ak"s are pretty tuff and take alot of abuse, just look at some of the climates and countrys this rifle was used in.............did you ever hear any complaints,...nuff said

The SAR-1 is a good reliable rifle. Also easy to clean. Mine is straight & has been 100% reliable. They aren't pretty, but they are functional. Mags are cheap.

Oh Tom, I'd gladly send you a dollar to help fund your AK. It's the least I could do for having you start this forum.

I have owned a SAR-1 and can tell you they are built like any ak would be in a 3rd world country, as sloppy as they can be and still work. The absolute best AK you can buy at an extremely reasonable price, and have it still look identical to what most ak's look like in the world today:

You will not be disappointed if you buy one. Its just the best on the market right now.
