AKM is just a modernized AK. Stamped receiver vs. the original milled is the main difference.

The AKM is just that, a modernized AK. However, the AK started out life with a stamped sheet metal receiver. The Russians lacked the technology to produce sheet metal receivers in the numbers required for their army. So, the familiar milled receiver AK was put into production until the Russian got the bugs worked out of the sheet metal receiver production.

Some would say the original sheet metal receivers fell apart and were thusly taken out of circulation. The early rifles remained in service for many years, so that puts some doubt on that conclusion.

The AKM is lighter than the milled AK-47 and uses a different butt stock. Other than that, they are pretty much the same.
