Sooner or latter this question had to come up. Especially since this is a Steyr forum on GLOCKtalk. So, in your opinion which is the better pistol?

Let's start going ballistic!
1) Walther

I've shot my M40 side by side with a G23 (which would be the closest Glock to the Steyr).

Trigger, accuracy, felt recoil, aesthetics, ergonomics .... the Steyr beats the G23 hands down. In talking to the owner of that particular G23 it looks as though reliability is also an advantage of the Steyr (we both have about the same number of rounds through them and his gun has had more failures then mine ... then again he occasionaly shoots Wolf so thats probably an ammo issue).

Now as for variety, ease of finding parts and accessories (in particular full capacity magazines), the Glock is the clear winner there.

I'd put that ranking like so ...

1.Steyr & Walther P99
2.Glock

AS a proud owner of a Steyr and a Glock, I can say without a doubt the Steyr is much better, out of the box at least. If tinkering is your thing the Glock has a lot of potential. After throwing a substantial amount of money at my G21, it is just now as nice to shoot as my Steyr. (maybe a little bit more) I've fired the direct Glock counterpart, the G23, and it really doesn't hold a candle to my M40. Precisely why I bought thr Steyr.

1)Steyr
2)Glock
3)Walther (only because I have no experience with them)

I am very impressed with the Steyr. Lon gtime reliability is unknown at this point. One thing GLocks beats everybody is the variety of sizes and calibers. If we just had a Steyr M in 45 and 10 and S in 45, 10 and 357 SIG...

glock was given the opportunity to manufacture what we call the Steyr M & S series pistols.

I prefer chamber support and the smaller grip on the steyr's,sights chamber indicator though neither pistol is perfect despite what gaston thinks.

its all in what you see, use, like and dislike. steyr fits me better than glock 23/19.

I have no experience with walther's pistols.

I think the Steyr is a better choice than the Glock in any type competition. They are just eaiser to shoot well than the Glock.

The trigger on newer Steyr pistols are much better than Glocks and I think the Steyr sights really work. I would like to have them on other pistols I own.

For daily carry the Glock wins for several reasons.

Let's see,i've owned a glock 17,19,23,26 and 30.I had no problems with any of the glocks.I now have a steyr M-9,in the first 300 rounds the trigger failed to reset 9 times.Tonight i put another 200 round thru the steyr and had 2 failues with the trigger not reseting.I do love the grip angle and the sights on the steyr. It's very accurate with black hills 115gr +p golddots.I haven't lost faith yet, hopefully the trigger problem is just new gun blues.

What do you guys feel a G23 needs to be good?

A 3.5lb trigger, ok. I doubt anything else is useful.

I have an M in Massachusetts. I bet only a few other people have them since they were banned as unsafe junk guns a few weeks after they shipped.

I bet you have a bad egg, I have never heard of that problem with any Steyr pistol. Have you had any warrenty work done on your gun?

The Steyr just has a better feel than Glock. I like the option of haveing a manuel safety and locking it up if I so choose to. The gun is more accurate than I am. Not too long ago I went shooting with a friend that brought a G23 and he was shooting all over the paper. I let him shoot my M40 and he actually started having groups. Another thing is that everyone seems to want a Glock, like having a Glock automaticly make you a one man army. Don't get me wrong Glocks are good guns and serve a purpose, but they are not the end all be all. I was shown quit a few Glock before I was shown the Steyr at the gun shop I frequent, but when I picked up the Steyr I knew that I had found what I was looking for.

when I was looking for my carry gun I looked at a lot of Glocks but I didnt like any of them and will probably never own one I just didnt like the feel of any of them. Before I found the S-40 I looked at a lot of other guns my fav unill the steyr was the kahr P. then I found the Steyr and knew that I had finaly found my carry pistol. if I had to rank I would rank Glocks somewhere at the bottom of all the guns I looked at.

Steyr M9 is an improvement on a Glock design. Steyr has more features, and better quality of manufacture and design. It has a better feel, finish, accuracy and less felt recoil. Built in safety and loaded chamber indicator are great too.

So, in my opinion:

1. Steyr
2. Beretta
3. HK
4. Glock
5. All others

A few years ago one of the gun rags did a write up on these three and maybe the H&K as well. They ranked Walther 1, Steyr 2, and Glock 3. They really raved about the Steyr but didnt like the then $650+ price tag. I like the ergos of the new P200 but Im not gonna shell out that kind of $$ for a plastic pistol. I really like glocks, but liked my p99 more, Ive never shot a styer but like the ergos better than the other two.

I would say Glock is #1 because of the simple/elegant design. The Steyr has some nice ergonomics though.

HK and Sig are a tie for #2
Steyr and Walther and Beretta are all #3 (Beretta is top quality but loses points for being conventional double action with a long trigger pull).

But all that I just mentioned are still 'top tier' guns.

Then come the guns like Kahr, Taurus, which is second Tier.

3rd Tier are things like Ruger, Kaltec, Sigma.

Steyr's have a manual safety which, if not used, does not interfere with handling or operation of the gun. Very desirable for me. There is no way to make a Glock safe w/ a round in the chamber. (Note - I am not LE)

I have small-medium sized hands and my M-357 feels better than any other auto pistol I have ever handled.

For my purposes -- the Steyr is better than the Glock...

Thus, I own two Steyrs -- and zero Glocks (I sold my G27 years ago and replaced it with a KT P-40/P-357)

Wilhelm Bubits, the mastermind of the M-Series worked for Glock once. I still can't find a significant improvement, though.

>>>I still can't find a significant improvement, though.<<<
I CAN! I think the Steyr is a significant improvement over the Glock, especially in terms of ergonomics. Every time I shoot, I am amazed with how well the thing fit my hand. Point shooting and sight shooting are virtually the same because it lines up so naturally. I just have to glance at the sights to ensure they're aligned, which they always are. The lower bore axis is an improvement IMHO as well. Recoil is straight back, with next to no muzzle flip, even with the very hot CorBon Pow'rball. I also think the beefier construction is an improvement, and so is the MUCH nicer trigger. Pistol choice is of course a very subjective thing, but for me, the Steyr is everything I want in a weapon, except maybe a longer barrel. A 5" Steyr....one can dream, right?

c5367 wrote: "The lower bore axis is an improvement IMHO as well. Recoil is straight back, with next to no muzzle flip,"

Yep -that is what it is all about: low bore axis. Ask an older, experienced 1911 shooter why those guys bend over backwards tho get a higher grip on thier guns. A lower bore axis means less flip and that WILL let you shoot accurately, faster. So what you say? So, if shooting quickly does not matter to you, get off Glocktalk & go buy a single shot.
Look, this forum is about handguns suitable for:

1)defense,
2)police work and
3)competition.

Want to take your time shooting? OK slow poke, here is what will happen to you if you leisurly take out your pistol, carefully aim for the "bullseye" & just squeeze that trigger - oh, say, 10 seconds per shot:

1) self defense. You'll be dead.
2) police work: same result.
3) competition: you will loose, as long as we are talking IPSC/USPSA, IDPA, steel, pins, GSSF (where steyr is not allowed), bianchi/NRA, PPC, etc. Anyone want to argue a polymer gun is a good choice for bullseye? It is not. Competition means fast on the target, don't jerk the trigger & hit the intended target whether a Glock plate at 10 yards or the center of an IPSC/IDPA target at 30 yards. Its about speed AND accuracy just like real life.

Point is, shooting fast & accurate MATTERS. How much faster is the steyr than the Glock? Hard to quantify that one; maybe just fast enough to save your life.

As for sights, I shoot the Steyr night sights. Grip? For small hands, the Steyr fits where Glock sometimes will not. I have big mits & the steyr is not a drawback.

I own both Glocks & Steyrs, they are both excellent but the Steyr has an edge.

I agree with Carlitos - Steyr is a superb pistol right out of the box, needs no modifications to make it shoot more accurate, and fits my hand like it was made for it. I vote Steyr to be better then Glock anyday. Not that Glocks are bad, it's just Steyrs are better.

Steyr in your hand is worth 2 Glocks in a box. :)

Hands down the steyr M40 is a very nice pistol. Very accurate and light years ahead of the glock in design, feel and accuracy.

I own 5 pistols in the 9mm caliber. If I were to rank them it would be:

1. G34
2. SA XD 9
3. Steyr M9
4. Arcus 94
5. Star BM

Why the G34 is #1 is because IMO it has a better feel than the SA. Both have been out of the box COMPLETELY RELIABLE and accurate as hell. The Steyr had to have about 1000 rds thru it to loosen the extractor for decent brass throwing. Accuracy is good out of the Steyr. Actually, it was mine to begin with and after my wife who happens to be my shooting partner shot it, she "took" it as hers.

If my Sigma VE was a 9 instead of a 40, I would rank it as #3 instead of the Steyr. It has been out of the box reliable too. The trigger may take some getting used to by some users though. I know alot of people bash Sigmas, but it is my night stand gun, it is comforting to there is 15 rds of Hi Shocks right there in a reliable pistol, if my wife or I were to need it.

Glock and Steyrs are very close to equal for me.
Tiggers: Stock Steyr's are better but glocks can be improved.
Weight and Size: Glocks have more variety and are lighter. I especially like my Gl 26.
Parts: Glocks have wide variety of stock and after market parts as well as many places to get them.
Grips: Steyrs are more comfortable to shoot with less felt recoil.
Reliability: Since I have fired many more rounds through my Glocks without any problems, they have the edge. Steyrs may be just as good, don't know yet.

Well, other than picking them up and looking at them at gun shows and shops, I only have experience with a GLOCK 36. And with that, not much. I fired one clip thru one at a gun range once (seemed like a nice gun though.). I picked up a Steyr (I don't know if it was a 9 or a 40 or a 357.) and aimed it (in a safe direction) and I really liked how fast that sight picture was to pick up. The only 2 reasons I like the GLOCK's a little better, is because they make guns chambered in .45 ACP, I'm a 45 man (I know, you wouldn't know that if I hadn't told you.;Q ;) ), and you can get a Lasermax for a GLOCK. But still, I think a Steyr M40 could just wander into my collection someday.;)

I'm hoping Steyr will offer the new design in .45gap. Right now they are going to offer it in 9x19, 9x21, .40S&W, and .357sig. In order to make one in .45acp they would have to redesign the slide and frame. To convert to .45gap all they would have to do is modify the slide, the ejector, and add a new barrel.

Steyr REALLY needs a Large series to accomadate .45 ACP/Super/SMC and 10mm and 9x25 ;P ;f

New design? GREAT! I love Steyr & can't wait to see what they come up with. Can you point us to a link or provide more info on the design change? Anything from the last SHOT show on this new Steyr? Thanks, C.

They call it the Steyr M-A1 series:

http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg45-e.htm

As far as I know, they just redesigned the frame shape a bit.
