No, not the WWI Biplane, Rather the Korean and Vietnam Bombtruck that the Navy developed. A-1 Skyraider. M2, Ya got any stories for this one?

Wasn't Ed Heinemann a genius!? If you can find a copy, "Ed Heinemann, Combat Aircraft Designer", Naval Institute Press, is a great book and talks about the SPAD, SKYRAIDER, SANDY, or whatever you want to call it, in detail, along with Heinemann's other great designs. The book is out of print, but you might be able to find a copy at www.abebooks.com or www.half.com. And to think Mr. Heinemann's formal education stopped at high school graduation.

Not a real story but I was almost almost washed out of Army flight training before I started, because of a joy ride in an AD Skyraider.

I pasted this from the Physicals thread.
"In 63 I was sent to an Air Force flight surgeon for my Army flight school physical.
Like an idiot I put down I had gotten air sick in the past.
The Doc was ready to bust me.
I told him that was in 1960, riding in a Skyraider on 5.5 G practice bombing run pullouts.
Hell anyone not used to that can lose their cookies"


In 1955 I was a Private in the USMCR at Anacostia, DC.
We had F4U4 Corsairs.
What a neat airplane but I never got to ride in it of course.

In 1959 when I got off active duty I joined the reserves again and now they had the Skyraider. It was the Navy version with two front seats and a "green house" behind. Which was actually blue. I think up to four seats could be put in back.

I went up with the commanding officer, a Colonel, for some practice bombing runs.
A Captain was flying wing.
At 10,000 ft the Colonel rolled the AD on it's back and let it fall.
As the nose pointed straight down we were screaming at the ground.
I looked over at the Colonel hunched forward.
To this 21 year old kid he looked as old as dirt.
I thought, "You old fart, I hope you don't poop out now. We won't hardly make a grease spot when we hit."

Well, his 5.5 G pullout grayed out this kid and a couple more had me recycling my lunch in a barf bag.;f

Guess I had one of the best jobs going and could have stayed on the ground a lot more when I got to SEA by working at the base newspaper.

But, after a couple of FAC missions over the Trail, I was hooked and became known as "that photographer who'll go anywhere".

If he was Full Bull, I would reckon he was a 1LT or a Captain during the early part of the war. I'll bet he could tell some stories and had the been there, done that ribbons to boot. Shame is they are dropping like flies now. God bless 'em for all they did.
