any ins or outs when buying new or used magazines?
anything to stay away from?
Thanks in advance!
Any of the Eastern Block surplus mags seem to work well. I like the 30 rounders better than that 40. The Ak was actually designed with a 30 round mag. Stick with the surplus mags. They are cheap, usually very nice condition & reliable. You might want to consider picking up a few 20 rounders for the range. They are more bench friendly.

You can usually pick up 2 30 rounders for the price of a single 40 rounder. I prefer the Bulgarian plastic waffle mags from K-var. New they run $10.99 each.
I own a couple of 40 rounders but they are a little long and dang they sure add some weight.
AK mags are cheap enough and plentiful enough that you can buy several of every flavor. Find out what you like and stock up on that variety. I've accumulated about 20 over the years...

The 40-rounder is definitely way too long and cumbersome. There are plenty of 20-rounders nowadays as well. Those come in handy when you shoot off the bench. The standard 30-rounder is the best though. When you run out of ammo, you can use it as a bludgeon.
you could always get a 75 or 100 round drum.Just kidding the 30 are the sweet spot as far as price and usability

I echo the thoughts about the 40s being too long and not designed specifically for the AK. I have yet to try the Bulgie waffles but I have had excellent experience (no poblems) with the Polish plastic 30 rounders from AIM. At $9.95 they're really hard to beat.
Cheers!
I like the bulgy waffles too! got a bunch of them.
I've been getting the Hungarian 20 rounders, I have 7 or 8 of them so far. much easier to shoot from the prone and just feel better than the 4 more inches of magazine hanging off the bottom.
40 rounds? blah, that is just a lot of damn magazine to carry around.

I have 1 40-, 1 10-, and 8 30-rounders.

My 40 rd mags were designed for the RPK squad automatic rifle. For the standard AK firing from the prone with them is awkward at best.

The 40rd mags work best for pics and frightening your neighbors........

I have a 40rnd mag that I believe was East German issue.
It works fine, I like it, but 30rnd mags are easier to keep in a load bearing vest. I keep the gun ready with the 40rnd mag loaded with 35rnds.
