I'm working on a project and I'll post pictures once it is done. If others are interested in an S-357 -- there is a way...
I've acquired an S-40 and have ordered an M-357 barrel. I'll get a 'smith locally to cut the M-357 barrel barrel down to S-series length and see how she does.
Once the barrel is trimmed, it should be a drop in fit.
Not sure if anyone else has tried this, but I like the .357 Sig cartridge so much I just had to give it a try to go with my M-40 and M-357. It will be about a $600 investment after 'smith fees, but if it works out -- it'l be worth it. Otherwise, I will have paid full retail for a still usable S-40!!;f

Are the Steyr .40 S&W the same as the .357 sig mags? I would think that they are the same since .357 sig uses .40 cal cases with 9mm bullets (roughly). But places like CDNN list different mags for both M40 and M357.

Glock also lists different mags but they are interchangeable. J.Michael^c

Yes, with the Steyr -- the mags are excatly the same ...except for the imprinting on the side.

M-357 bbl to S-357.
Been there. Done that. Got the Tee-Shirt.
Not all that much difference in handling, but I will agree that there IS an edge in confidence, carrying a .357 Sig. More flash, more bang, more penetration.
Don't know why Steyr won't get with the program, but they seemed totally disinterested when I corresponded with them.
Now, Fly, how 'bout working on a 10mm barrel?

I would think it possible to lengthen the chamber of an M40 barrel to accept the 10mm cartridge. However, would the slide travel and ejection port size be enough to eject the spent shell? Or, would the 10mm cartridges fit in the .40 S&W mag? Doubtful.
Personally, I'd like to see an M45 on the market!!

I was being facetious, Fly, but my thought is that if Steyr - or any other company - started off with a 10mm platform, the .40 Cal. and .357 Sig would require only barrel changes.

Man I've had an itch to try just such a thing ... I'm thinking the problem would be with magazines though (I think you can stuff some 10mm into a .45 mag, but dunno about a .40).
Someone else here mentioned the possible problem of not enough slide travel to eject the longer cartridge.
I'd love to go from S40 to S10 for my CCW piece.

Georgia Arms has a 155 .40 S&W load which is very hot. 1300fps. Use that if you want the power. Personally I would just shoot 155/165/180 Golt Dot or Winchester RA40T.

Steyr decided to can the S357 before they built any ... there is a conversion kit available for your S40 however (there's a thread in this forum about it)

Another option is to purchase a factory barrel for the M357 from USA Steyr and have it shortened in length by a gunsmith for use in your S40.
