Any first hand experience with the Pro Hunter? Trying to research it's merits...really like the stainless mountain package in 30/06.
Also like the Scout in .308? Any pro/con advice?
Planning on purchasing just 1 long gun, so it'll have to be an all rounder.

I have an SBS Pro Hunter Stainless in .30-06. It is excellent. My only complaint is that when I installed the hi-cap kit, the mags required some work to feed reliably.
There have been several threads on this forum on the subject.
I've had three; a full length .308 and a "youth" size 7mm-08, and a .376 carbine. All were SUPERB shooters - even with the short barrel the 7-08 would shoot under 1.5" at 200 yards (as far out as I wanted to shoot it - this was an in close gun for me). The .308 would routinely shoot into .5" at 100 yards once I got my handloads tweaked for it. The .376 would shoot into 1.5" at 100 yards, and was probably capable of better accuracy but bench shooting was in the not-fun category...
My only complaint is that they only come in one action length, regardless of caliber, and barrel lengths are limited - you either get 24" or 20" - I'd have liked a 22" version in either caliber for an "all around" gun.
Now that Dynamit Noble is handling Steyr imports, I'd really like to see a Pro Hunter in 300 or 7mm WSM; if they put one out I'd be first in line to buy...

Kevin

as far as your 10" off first shot........try, just for fun, not cleaning it after a short range session. Next time out, try hitting the target with the "fouled" barrel. It may be that you need to slop a little brass in the barrel in one spot for it to become the acurate shooter that you like. I'm not suggesting that you NOT clean your weapon, only suggesting this as a diagnostic tool to find the problem and possibly a cure. I just can't see going hunting and having to fire a shot before shooting a deer. (scares them away I think)
Let me know what you find if you try this.

@smogonly
This also is suggested by active police snipers I met.
After cleaning they always fire 1 shot for the reason you mention.
I will try it this week. Interesting point of vieuw, I always was looking at it as a temperature related problem.
I let you know how it went.

YES, it is a lot better. And yes there is an inperfection inside the barrel. 8 cm from the muzzle. Didn't saw it before.
I think, I'm going to leave it this way. To afraight to ruinthe accuraty.

Thanks for the report.
I just purchased a used Cooper model Scout and can't wait to get it out to the range.
I have a pile of extra 10 round magazines. Any idea what they're worth?

I got 5 magazines and the hi-cap adapter with the gun
The gun is a scout Cooper model.
He was using it in Alaska, but purchased a 376 because the 308 is a bit "underguned" for Alaska.
I paid $2000 for the whole shoot'n match.
I just want the five round magazines for it.

Is the scoop on it scoutmounted, of normal?
I don't like the Hicap system. It's just an ugly thing.
I prefere extra normal mags in stead of the hi caps.
Do you know why somebody needs a 10 round rifle?
The hicap system an 1 mag cost 280 Euro's here.
Is there something that the .300 Win Mag can't handle?
I think the scout is a wonderfull machine, And if you got the scoperings included, you payed a fair price

I agree with you completely on the 10 round magazines.
I think that the 2 five round magazines are a better option because you can carry a spare magazine in the butt stock if the primary magazine fails, AND you can carry two differant loads for differant purposes. The weapon is also much better balanced with two 5's instead of one 10.
How much is 280 euro in dollars?
The scope is forward (scout) mounted. I prefer it that way. I have a Co-Pilot (http://www.wildwestguns.com/) in 457 magnum with the forward mounted scope and it's GREAT!!!!

I know the prices in USA are mutch lower, and there is now way you can send it to Europe.
We even can't buy scopes (also half the price) online, and let them send over here. Gunparts you know.
Sorry to dissapoint you.

Amazing,
I didn't know that.
You can't even buy magazines?
I thought California was the worst place to own a firearm.

We can buy scopes and magazines in registrated gunshops with trader license. Buth because the risks they take (its almost imposible to send something back to manufactor for guarantee) the prices are very high.
Yes, we have the most stupid weapenlaw in the world. Exaple: You cant buy a rifle in cal .22 without a license.
Almost all the other calibers like .300WinMag are free....
