View Full Version : S40 routine maintenance
I have never disassembled a gun beyond a standard field strip. I am picking up my new S40 today (yeehaw!) and have a couple questions. First, what extent do I need to go to in terms of cleaning before I go to the range, and second, should I attempt to fully disassemble and clean the gun myself (when that becomes necessary), or should I have an armorer do it for me? I am fairly detail oriented and have patience, I just don't have the experience with handguns...any advice is greatly appreciated. I have seen some of the threads posted here in reference to stripping and cleaning - some of it sounds a little advanced - how tough would the S40 be for a beginner?

The basic field strip is extremely simple with the Steyr. More advanced stripping by removing the metal receiver from the plastic grip/frame in itself isn't too difficult nor require special tools. However, I would avoid any further disassembly. You should be able to effectively clean all that you need to without parting out the reciever/trigger/sear grouping.

Disassembling the Steyr M/S (http://www.glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=240389)
Picked up my S40 (SN in the 34XXX range), but I haven't been to the range yet. I did manage to strip the gun down to the level shown on the Virginia Beach Rifle and Pistol CLub website. It wasn't difficult and I suspect it will only get easier with practice. I gave the parts a good once over, lightly oiled, and stuck everyting back in it's place....I'll be off to the range this weekend to see how many times I get hit in the head with spent casings^b
Thanks for the tips...happy shooting!
