OK ... I'm new to AR15's. And, occasionally, I'm gonna ask some dumb newbie questions. I think this is one of them.
I bought a 223 Broken Shell Extractor. It arrived with no instructions.
How does this thing work?

I beleive you insert the smaller end into the case that's lodged in your chamber and close the bolt and allow the extractor on the bolt to engage the lip on the rear of the tool and it will pull the case out when you draw the bolt back.

Bingo. These are used for the rare occasion when the rim tears away from the case instead of extracting it.
Be warned though, it can sometimes take a very large amount of force to open the bolt.
