Heh, sure. I have a friend near Niagara Falls, NY. When I go there he lets me ride his Ducati 748 on group rides with them.

When I bought the '04 ZX-6R, I got a quote on the insurance, then I asked my agent how much more would it be to add the old bike, with just liability. It ended up not being more, but $200/yr. less! So it's worth $200/yr. just sitting in the garage.

I figured I'd keep it around for monsoon season when it threatens rain, but probably won't during the day (it usually rains at night around here). Also will have a backup in case the other one is down with a bad tire or otherwise being worked on.

Have you done any mods (jetting, suspension valving)?

I raised the fork tubes 5mm in the clamps, which really helped initial turn-in, otherwise mine is stock. Next step will be some stickier tires.

Didn't know about this club.

I ride (although not very much lately) a 1998 Kawasaki Concours sport touring bike. Been everywhere from the top of Pikes Peak to Virginia on that bike. Since I got hitched, I don't do as much riding as I used to. The little woman does like to "two up" now and then, but I don't know if she could handle a real road trip.

Ahh......... I think that I was the 43rd person to speak up and vote for this new forum, but must have 'missed-the-announcement' of its' inception.

Been 'riding' for many years (about 35), and presently own a 2001 Yamaha FZ-1. Kind of reversed the normal trend, as I rode BMW's when I was in my twenties, and later discovered the pleasures of more 'sporty' bikes. Will be leaving next Thurs. (10th) for an FZ-1
'Rally', at Deals Gap, NC. Right now, we are at 112 FZ-1's, plus the R-1 forum guys are joining us, for a total of around 200 motorcycles.

Can you say TAIL-OF-THE DRAGON
Yes I can. :) I try to get down there once a year. I've not yet been able to.

On my last trip, I nearly hit some wild turkeys that decided to fly across the street! One was helmet high, the other was chest high. I worked every silver lever on the GSXR to get it slowed down. ;f

The FZ-1 is a cool bike. Please post pictures when you return.

I haven't owned a bike for a few years now but I'm hoping to buy one this fall. I guess it will depend on how much money I spend when the AWB sunsets ;)

Anyway, I've been riding and racing bikes since I was 11 years old, mostly MX with a few hare scrambles thrown in. I quit racing MX about 10 years ago and bought a used Ninja 600 then traded that for a GSXR 750. The GSXR proved a little too big for me (I'm a smaller guy) so I sold it and bought a 2000 R6. I sold it in 2001 because after our first kid I didn't have time to ride it.

Now I miss not having a bike and want another one :(

WERA49 - Yeah, a wild turkey would be a BAD thing to hit at speed ;P

Thanks for the compliment on my 'ride', and I will take the liberty to post some pics when I return. My bike is 'almost' stock, but some of the other guys at the 'Rally' have really 'tricked' theirs out. Some of the R-1 guys coming to the 'Rally' have installed 'Nos', or turbocharged their machines.

BTW, I have ridden my friends' (an Indianpolis Cop) Gixxer 750 with a D&D pipe, and it was an 'enjoyable' experiencce. At 52 yrs. old, I don't have the 'back' to assume a pure sportbike position for very long (but WISH that I did)!!!;f

I so miss the Dragon, all 318 curves of her. I used to live in Durham, and I'd make day trips out there every once in awhile. I went back down there last October (without my bike), and they had repaved the entire length. No more scrap marks from my pegs. I feel violated in some way. Anyway, I drove through it in a rented Caddy STS -- when I got back to the hotel, which was about 20 minutes away, the brakes still reeked :)

madhatta,

I rode a '67 Triumph Bonneville for 4 years. I bought it new in '67. In 1971 I was living in Norway and traded the B'ville for a new BMW boxer, which eventually got traded for my first Harley, and I've been on Harley's ever since.

Frankly, I really liked the B'ville. But it was hard to turn down the offer to get a new BMW in Europe, without tax, and getting more than I paid for the B'ville in trade. Overall, the new BMW cost me under $1,000, with Craven bags!

Bullman,
I bought my Triumph from a coworker that wanted to 'ride Harley'.
After about a year on the Harley he missed the Triumph and bought the speed triple. He loves it! I have yet to ride it- but if I was to buy a bike in that class, I think I would strongly consider that one.

I am just drawn to its looks. Those bug eye headlights are so ugly they sort of grow on you. That, and everything I have read about how the triple sounds when it is wound up is intriguing too, haven't heard one in person yet though.

I see this kind of prejudice a lot on both sides of the fence. One of the guys that work for me has one of these; http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products/GSX1300RZK4/Default.aspx

I have driven it a few times and I will tell you that it is one bada** machine. It accelerates and corners like a dream.

I personally find the crotch rockets uncomfortable to ride. I have had a lot of knee surgeries and have a hard time bending my knee back to that degree.

I own an H-D and have for years, but I will say that I have owned Japanese, German, English and Italian motorcycles; all of them fine machines in their own right.

An LEO friend of mine says they scrape up the remains of super performance bikes all the time on the freeways.

I think some of the prejudice you see out there is because of the disproportionate accident rate you see on these very fast motorcycles. I saw a guy get it on a performance bike a couple of monthís ago. Donít know the outcome but it could not have been good. He made the classic mistake of accelerating at an intersection with oncoming traffic turning left. Sure enough the driver of the car turned left right in front of him and BOOM!

I know I have seen my insurance rates steadily climb over the years even though I have never made a claim against it. I am told it is because of the performance bikes and the accident rates involved. I know some of the guys that I talk to that have HOGís are mad about increased insurance rates and the perception of bikes in general by the non-riding public.

Having said all that I do like to ride performance bikes occasionally, they are a blast. Donít know if I would still be here writing this if I owned one though. (I could be a speed junkie real easy)

I think it is a lot like people that I see flying out of the small airports I frequent when flying, just got to know your limitations.

Don't own one yet, but am looking at a new '04 Suzuki Volusia. Dealer says he will sell for $5995. Is this a good price or should he come down a little more? I really like the way the Volusia looks, and at 4.9% interest, the payments would be low enough so I could handle it without too much trouble.

Any pointers or advice?

Thanks.

I had one of those, red 98. Put a two brothers carbon slip on pipe on it. It was fun to ride.

800cc red 2001 VFR for me.

With a kitted injector array, a better airbox, a better pipe and hi-perf ignition.

Went from only 150MPH top-end to almost 175 now, with a MPG drop of only 2-3.

Riding a sportbike long-term does require some extra precautions... such as:

1. Everyone will turn in front of you becasue no one can see you, even worse than for other bikes.

2. The real riding difference lies in knowing when it is safe to accelerate quickly and when it would not be prudent.

3. Whatever you ride, for crissakes, DO NOT SIT IN TRAFFIC WAITING TO TURN LEFT!!! Turn right, then cut across both lanes. Holy crap, people rear-end CARS AND SEMI TRUCKS EVERY DAY because they 'didn't see them'.

See Dick. See Dick ride. See Dick waiting in traffic to turn left. See Dick become roadkill.

Don't Be A Dick!

Practice your quick stops regularly. Need to swap out your back tire?! Go to a parking lot and get nasty with the scoot, then....it'll save your life.

Like when you are correct in saying, "I think this fool is about to turn left in front of me, thereby cutting me off and trying to kill me. I'd better get ready to stop. Is anyone following closely behind me?!" and you have almost 11 milliseconds to decide and execute...or fail miserably.

Best regards,

FastVFR

Suzuki DL1000 Vstrom. However, seeing all of the VFRs makes me want to get one. I had a 2000 VFR yellow. I just wish they made a 1000cc. The DL1000 motor is superior to the VFR (IMHO), which is why I went with the VSTROM.

2003 KLR 650...

(The green one)

The most fun, versatile and usable bike I've ever owned....

It will putter along on trails in first gear all day long without overheating (liquid cooling) or cruise the interstate at 85+ all day, sipping fuel from a 6 gallon tank with 250 mile range

She ain't no trailer queen either..

She sees about 75/25 dirt/pavement...

Been to Mexico twice with her already, got a big week long trip to Copper Canyon planned for October..

I realize my bike will not be everyone's cup of tea, but I like it. It has 3,000 miles on it so far. It handles great, sounds great, and is very light for its size. I have added carbon mufflers, DP piping, and K&N airfilter.

Started riding late in life, 4 years ago at the age of 40. Put about 44,000-45,000 miles on these 3 bikes in that time. Recently I nearly purchased a 2002 British Racing Green Triumph Sprint ST, but I backed out at the last minute. It was a pretty good deal, and I'm still kinda bummed about it. Someday I still plan on getting one, or perhaps a BMW sport-tourer.

Bullman

That Sprint would have been a cool bike. I ride a Kaw Concours and I have thoroughly enjoyed sport touring. Since I got married that has kinda gone by the wayside, harder to two up because there is no place to sling my tent then;f I hope to return to it someday, maybe get a Wing and just motel it so the wife will come along, When I am rich and retired maybe ;f
