Normally I'm hardline 10mm. But for some time now I've had this G27 as a bedside. I've shot it and it bites my trigger finger. Its the only 40 I have and am considering going for another caliber or is the 40 that good. I know its not going to knock down Mr Bruin at 50 paces but I'm not really tuned into just what a 40 will do other that self defense. Any game shooters or distance shooters advice or stories welcomed. Thanx

Um, the .40 is arguably the "standard" law enforcment round in the USA.

I was given one shot with a DeltaElite 10mm to hit a water jug at 100 yards, and I did it.

Sorry I guess I was a little hazy on my request.

I most appreciate that GREAT shot with the Delta Elite and am aware of the 40 S&W popularity with LE, and well deserved as I came from the days of the 38 special with a 2# delivery vehicle.

For years I tried to settle on as few calibers as possible because I hand load and, as with many, I looked for that one do all bullet. Then settled on the 10MM. Began to surf the I-net for like minded people and found em right here on GT/The 10 Ring. Never had much use for the 40 because I have loaded a gazillion 45 ACP and love that caliber as well. Until the Little G 27 popped up at an unbelievable price at my local gun store. Then I was into another caliber. God forbid! I did not need that. But have gotten fond of it except for the finger biting. And it fits my hand very well!!!!

SO! My twisted mind begins to think that If this thing can knock down woodsy critters, two and four legged, maybe I could retire my beloved G29. Hummmmm? Think I'll ask around. Seems I was reading where some one took on a big alligator with the 40 and did well.

There aren't too many alligators where I walk around here in the Cascades but we do have some miscreants, perpatrators, fuzzies that may wish to challenge me for the trail. Thus my querry is how big a critter CAN I knock down? 100, 200, 500 pounds maybe? Of course if I encounter that of the 500# and above I hope to have something a might more persuasive and preferably belt fed.

Thanx for all your replies and safe shooting.

How good a shot are you? It don't matter what caliber you carry if you can't hit your target. A .40S&W between the eyes will stop any game. We used to slaughter cattle with a .22long.

If he's walking around in the Cascade mountains then there is the chance he'd happen upon a very nice size Black Bear.. I don't think i'd like to shoot a Black bear in the head tween the eyes with a .40.. I think all you would do is make him angry.. ;P

Yeah other then that a .40 would make a fine trail gun.. I think most of the stuff you would see could be handled with the 180 gr or 165 gr defense loads.. Rabid animals, people.. etc..

Personally i can't stand the G27..I much prefer the G23 which fits me much better and is still light and concealable..

good luck.
Jeff.

Speaking of black bears. We took pix of a 250# on our ranch in the Okanogan. I'm definately not going to pop him with the 27. Unless he's knawing on a part of me. And as a young fella on an Ohio farm we did all our butchering with a 22LR from rabbits to cattle. You're right about shot placement. I've seen a guy bounce a 45acp round- nose of a hogs skull at almost point blank range.

After much consideration I believe I'll just stick with the G29. I was curious about the 40. Seems some are hunting Havelina with the 40 down south like NM or AZ. The 27 can be a nice skunkgitter for around the house. I do appreciate the input and enjoy the replies.

The most fear I have walking around in the Cascades, thus far, are the city hikers and hunters that get bored and want to start plinking at figments. By then most of the critters are the next canyon over. We don't even go out anymore during deer/elk season.

We are also having a cougar problem out here since they outlawed the dogs hunting and leg hold traps. After a few more people are killed and eaten I look for the state to relax their laws a bit. Ya know those cougars like taking someone off one of those mountain bikes. Kind of like taking down a running deer, I guess, sort of a sport with a snack included.

Oh Boy I can hear the flames comin.

Anything short of Black bear..you'd be good to go in my opinion with the 27. Otherwise take the 29, just make sure it is loaded with real 10mm ammo or you gain nothing.:)

My buddy shot a wild boar with a Glock 23 a couple years ago. I posted the pictures on this forum but recieved lots of flak for it. It put the boar down quick and humane.

40sw hands down is my favorite carry load/gun . More than enough accurate in my hand for any self defemsive engagement encounter.

Hey There:

Say now! you all make a real case for packing that 40. And knocking down that pig is what I had in mind with my first post. That was something.

I guess I'm a low pressure guy and that 40 seemed to be getting up there on the scale. Along with the rumors of the KB's and all. I guess it depends on the trip and circumstances. I think most of us are kind of looking for that one do all handgun even tho the experts say there ain't no such thing?? Altho That 29 comes
about as close as you can get, its still a chunk.

Tell a little secret/ I've been keeping them both handy for the last two weeks and when the notion hits me I just get em out and heft em, site em, look em over for a while then put em away for a little while. Kind of comforting. Of course only a Glock man would understand that, right? ;)

LAST SUMMER I WAS UP AT OUR RANCH NEAR WINSTON NM,i HAD BEEN CHECKING UP ON SOME STRAYS THAT HAD BEEN MISSING FOR ABOUT A WEEK. WHEN I WAS COMEING BACK DOWN THE TRAIL I WAS CONFROUNTED BY A 250 LB BLACK BEAR AND SHE DIDNT LIKE ME AT ALL I WAS CARRYING MY GLOCK 23 AND WHEN THE REAGULAR YELLING AT HER AND WAVEING MY ARMS AT HER DIDNT WORK I PULLED MY GLOCK AND FIRED SHE WAS ABOUT 20 YRDS FROM ME WHEN I LET GO A REM.GOLDEN SABER AND SHE WENT DOWN WITH THAT ONE SHOT.
IN OCT OF LAST YEAR I KILLED A MOUNTION LION THAT WEIGHED 120LBS WITH THE SAME GUN AND ROUND AND THAT SHOT WAS ABOUT 45 YRDS SO THE 23 HAS MY VOTE.
THE GUN WILL DO THE JOB IF YOU KNOW HOW TO PLACE THE SHOT AND USE THE RIGHT AMMO.

I used my BB gun to blow a hole through the middle of a chameleon on the side of a clothes line pole at about 30 feet. Surprised the hell out of me.

My best shot was made with a Ruger Blackhawk .357. 6.5". I hit a pennzoil qt oil can at 75yds, first shot.

I've also taken insanely long shots with my G17, we were hitting, 9 times out of 10, a flattened 12-pack beer box at what had to be at least 125yds. Only took about 4 shots to get elevation correct to make the hits. My son-in-law, new to Glocks, fell in love with that pistol immediately. He's a damn good shot as well.

Now these are great achievements and precisely what I've been looking for.

Keep em coming. These are great shots and the kind of shooting that most of us do other than range time. Which, you have to admit gets a little dry at times. Does for me anyway. I know we buy these guns for various reasons and using them for great shots, be it targets or defense. I'm encouraged about not requiring a hand cannon to take care of business.

I've always believed that tatics and shot placement is absolute when it comes to ownership responsibility and you all are bearing me out.
And doesn't it feel good when you can knock something down or pop a target at more than the industry stated 25 yards. Even the 22 boxes said "Dangerous within 1 mile" when I was a kid. Probably still do.
Something to think about.

Appreciate the great testimonies, Thanx!

Best shot with Glock .40-
several years ago, I was at the range with a couple milsurp rifles. I had a very mediocre showing with them, but just before leaving, I told my buddy, "watch this". I leaned against a pillar, and aimed with my G23 at a 20 oz pop bottle at about 30 meters...and popped it with one shot.

On game: about 3 or 4 years ago, I was hunting, and one of my hunting partners hit a decent buck with a shoulder to ribs shot from his .35 Remington. 25 or 30 minutes later, when I walked up, that buck jumped up and ran! My friend and I followed into the woods, where the deer was on the ground, but
very much alive and alert. He stretched his neck up and to the side, like he was about to get back up, and I popped him right under the ear at about 15 meters with a 155-grain XTP loaded to about 1170 fps. This was a spinal column shot, and he was DRT.

Deer are amazing. My last deer two years ago. Thing is grazing about 150 yards out. No problem. Put the scope on it, pulled the trigger, it roars up and starts running. So now it's running broadside to me, running full bore, about 150 yards out. I thought I'd missed. So I put 3 more rounds at the vitals. I know I flinched once, and shot in front of it. But I thought I should have been hitting it. Got to the edge of the woods, and disappeared.

Now I'm pissed. 4 rounds, should have hit it three times, and it just ran off. Thought my gun got dropped and the scope was off. So I start towards the woods and find a huge blood trail. I find the deer 20 feet in, dead as a doornail. At least one hit where I was aiming. Gut the deer, and find three .30 sized holes on the entry side, all about 1 inch apart.

This thing went 200 yards full bore with three holes in the vitals, with a 30-06. I amazed myself with that shooting. I'm not a terribly great shot, especially when stuff is moving fast.

I was carrying a .40 at the time :)

most of my spectacular shots are with my 10" ruger bull bbl mk II, it is my confidence building gun, especially when i am training people on handguns, whether they are new to shooting or seasoned pro's. first thing i do is set out orange clay birds at 100 yards, shoot a couple, then instruct to the next person how perform the same feat. they usually can do the same within 20 rds and good instruction, after you get them past the 25yd mentality, they shoot awesome at closer ranges. i have a 300 yd handgun range at my house and can hit a gallon milk jug about 5 out of 20 shots with the same gun. i have a metal plate that is about 18 inches wide and 24inches tall. i can hit it with my g22 pretty regularly and have amazed a few people with multiple hits from a 2inch 38 at the 300 yd mk. I have a confirmed kill on a beldings ground squirral at 204yds with the mkII.

my longest handgun shot was years ago when i was in montana. a friend of mine had a mkII identical to mine, we hiked up to a ridge that was about 125 yards higher than a flooded field below. there were some ducks on the water, shooting downhill was easier than i thought. we didnt want to actually shoot the ducks, but i wanted to bet that i could put a bullet one foot to the right of the edge duck, i shot and hit about 5 feet low, the second shot was right where i called it. i did a third with same results. this particular friend has been witness to a few of my rediculously lucky shots and was amazed, but not too much. i instructed him how to hold and where to aim, inside of his 3rd shot he was doing the same. we were spotting for each other with a 10x set of bino's. the ducks looked terribly far away, so a quick check of the rangefinder revealed varied results between 575 and 580 yards. then we were both amazed. most things are not as hard as most people think, just try it, that is the hardest part, convincing yourself that it can be done. if you want amazing, read about elmer keith and some of his 600yd running deer shots with a 4 inch 44mag, he is my biggest role model in long range handgunning.

I have many great stories about my 1911's, but as for my Glock 23....I took a 270 pound bore at 30yds with a 165gr Gold Dot.

1) I shot bat on the other side of a 2x4 in my treestand with my G20 using 180 gr. FMJ handloads. Split him right in half and put a clean .401 inch hole in the board.

2) when I was about 16 I shot 2 bobcats (one of them running) with my 6.5 Swede Mauser at about 80 yards. My eyes and reflexes were a bit better then.

3) The shot that still impresses me today was also from when I was 16. I shot a doe at 60 yards with my bow and arrow. The arrow went clean through both lungs and the doe dropped 20 yards later.
