OK, I'm looking to get a new 9mm that performs well as both a carry weapon and a range gun. I love my G26 and am leaning toward a G19. I was just wondering if you guys think I should consider another brand/model. Price is a factor, but I can pay a little more if I need to. I won't be looking at Kahr for personal reasons. Thanks!

Get yourself one of those new FN rollmarked Hi Power 9mm. Single action pistols are best!

H&K USP in either the full size or compact, either one is a good choice. ^c

I love my g19. Had it since '91 and it's been great. If I was going to try a differnt make I'd prolly give HK a shot (although they are so pricy). I have stuck with Glock for all my aemi autos. I like not having to think about which gun I have. If it's a Glock it's going to work the same no matter which caliber.

I have the 26 and 19 and like the fact that they have the same kind of triggers which helps my accuracy. Also have a S9 Steyr which has a very similar trigger. The M9 (about the size of a 19) are really cheap now.

As much as I love the SIG P226 in 9mm since you have a G26 I think you'll like the versatility of having a G19/G26 combo. I'd also consider the G34 if you want to go full size.

Check out a S&W 3913. If yop can find an older slightly used one without the rail attachment, all the better. An excellant carry piece.

I have a G-19/G-26 combo and it's great! Some holsters work with both pistols. The G-19 mags work in the G-26. The same trigger pull and sight picture. I CCW the G-26 in a fobus paddle and the G-19 is my H.D. pistol with Glock Tac Light. Both pistols have night sights. Glocks are easy to clean, require little lube, and you can fix them yourself. Both are reliable and tough as can be.;c

That said I own a P225 that is a favorite of mine. It feels great in the hand and is extremly accurate.

I've owned several guns over the years and I always end up carrying my G19. Light, easily concealed and 16 rounds of CorBon +P ammo. I can't imagine anything else would be better.

Ruger P85/89. Inexpensive yet reliable as a rock. I have a P85 which is about the same size as a G19 with the same capacity (15+1). It is just as reliable as my 9mm Glocks (never a malfunction) and can be found used for under $300. New P89s run in the $350 range at my local FFL.

then get yourself a dedicated range gun for fun. I'd recommend something full size, all steel, hi cap available

He only has one Glock, a G-26 subcompact. I wouldn't recommend getting almost the exact same gun but very slightly larger (G-19) as pistola #2. Branch out a litle, enjoy the fine variety of firearms available to you.

1. G19

If you REALLY feel the need to do something different:
2. SIG P229
3. SIG P228
4. HK USP Compact or P2000

Browning hi-power
1911 in 9mm
CZ-75 (or clones like the baby eagle)

there are many more, but these would be at the top of my list for a range pistol. Heavy is only a problem for carry guns, and a bonus for target guns. You allready have a great carry gun...

06-19-2004, 09:37
Absolutely

If price is a factor and you want something a little more traditional check out the Smith & Wesson 908.

First off no one mentioned Revolvers, next time your at your local gun store pick up a snub nose revolver, but be warned once you do you might get hooked right their and then, theirs something about revolvers that pistols just don't have...

Other semi autos

Browning Hi Power
H&K USP, P2000
Walther P99
Sig Sauer any model
1911A1 45 Colt, Springfield
Smith & Wesson series of pistols

Don't forget about revolvers, I’m telling you that the revolver bug is extremely contagious, before you know you'll have 5 in your collection...

Don't forget to put some money aside for when the assault weapons ban sunsets...

Thanks for all of the opinions, you have given me some good ideas that I hadn't thought of, and reminded me of guns I have tried and liked at some point but forgot about. If I don't get the G19 now, I'm sure I'll get it at some point, you can never have too many Glocks, or too many guns in general for that matter :)

CZ 75B - high capacity, good accuracy, excellent reliability, fine ergonomics, best SA trigger after the 1911's, relatively inexpensive.

Hydrilla
06-21-2004, 07:16
Yeah, the 75B has been on my short list for a while now, I've always heard good things about them. The only CZ I ever owned was the horrible .40 CZ 100. Functioned fine but that mile long DAO trigger pull was hideous!

CZ BD's - the decocker models - seem to defeat one of the best features of the design: the ability to carry it cocked and locked, thus permiting SA pull from the get-go. The DA mode on my CZ B isn't awful, but why use it, since the SA is so good?

Buster55, I've been a Makarovnik for a few years now and couldn't agree with you more  although I've never owned an EG one, I hear they are awesome. I started with the military Bulgies and bought a couple of Arsenal models, which are incredibly smooth!

Try a Kahr if you want the operation to duplicate your Glock. Go for a SIG P226 if you have confidence in the politicos letting the mag ban sunset. Pick up a HK P7M8 if you like the unique or a SIG P210 if you want to see how slick a pistol can really be. Have Fun!

Ruger P89 - durable, reliable, accurate and "relatively" inexpensive! Hi-cap mags are easy to find and , again, relatively inexpensive PLUS you can get a Ruger PC9 carbine ( that accepts the same mags ) and have a neat, fun pair!!

G19 will make a medium/small combo with the 26; but for a different brand try the best out of the box cheap gun, the first cousin of the G19, the Steyr M9.

You'll be well served by any of the choices given here. My personal choices in order for you would be:

1. Glock G19 (just for the compatibility of the magazines)
2. Sig P228/P229/P239 (great guns all)
3. H&K USP9/USP9c

No doubt the Glock 19 is a fine choice. It was my carry gun for a couple of years and if I had to go back to it you would hear no complaints from me.

If you feel the need to try something other than combat tupperware I (and a few others I see) highly recomend the Sig Sauer P228. The 228 is, IHMO, the finest 9mm hangun ever made. Compared to the 19 I find that the 228 is a more natual pointer, fits my hand better, has better factory sights, and I prefer the placement of the controls. These are all pretty minor things and are based on personal preferences so your milage may vary, but they are what distinguishes the 288. The only real complaint I have about the 228 is that it is a little pricey.

Others that I like but don't currently own are the Springfield XD and CZ 75D Compact. I think you could do very well with either of these guns. I'm personally waiting to see if CZ introduces a .40 version of the 75D or something similar.

Ya, what he said. I was very reluctant to purchase PM9 owing to early model blues, but recent serial numbers are close to "Perfection" enough so I'm carrying it as I type this! It will be come my 100% carry pistol when I relocate to Florida. Fits nicely in front pocket holster of my shorts!

Great house gun. Pretty large for concealed carry.

You already know the high quality of the Glock. Why would you consider getting another brand? Just for the sake of variety? Not a good enough reason, for variety, eat apples instead of oranges, when it comes to handguns stick with Glock. The G19 gets my vote.

Other great choices:

Para Ord P18 (18+1 capacity for LE)

HKUSP9CLEM or the new P2000

Colt M1911 9mm (of course you'll have to work on it, that's part of the fun!)

and if you got a lot of money...;) HKP7M9 or M13

You couldn't go wrong with the Glock 19.
Others I've really liked are Browning Hi Power, HK P7M8, Sig 228, Kimber Pro Carry, Glock 17 and SW 686 revolver. Once you've tried out a few you won't want to stop with just one more.

Browning Hi Power. Have the magazine disconnect safety removed and get a trigger job. Add grips you like. Sounds a lot like buying a 1911, huh? I don't think you'll be disappointed, I really enjoy mine.

Quality hi-capacity magazines are available cheap at CDNN, around $19. I have 5 17-rd magazines from them, the gun has yet to choke on any ammo no matter the magazine in the gun.

Yes, the trigger will need addressing but after that it's all gravy.

I do love mine.

Another vote for getting a BHP. I have the same setup, carry a G26 and range/IDPA with a BHP. The BHP being single action makes a great range gun and they are very accurage out of the box. There are lots of other good choices but I really like the feel of a BHP.

These unqualified calls for G19 are interesting given all the folks having trouble with new G19's and JHPs. Ya, ya, you can "fix" it, but why should you have to.

So, I guess people are recommending older, gen2?, G19s...

There is absolutely nothing unqualified about my suggestion to get a G19. My experience with them has been excellent (I'm on my third one). Of the three, this latest has been the best.

As with ANYTHING you read on the internet....it's worth just under $.02, Your Milage May Vary, and have a grain of salt ready to take.

How about a Springfield Armory XD9?
Seems to get good reviews. Most people really like the one they own. I almost picked one up, but seen it as a Glock imposter. hehe.

The Ruger P95 also is a good choice. It is a full size though. Mine has always shot well. Digests anything I put in it.

I cast another vote for the Ruger P-95. I have the stainless model and I have put nearly 2,000 rounds through it. Reasonably accurate and absolutely reliable(no jams yet). It devours any ammo. It is the lightest(27 ounces) of the P-series pistols and it could be used for CCW by some people with the right holster. Mine doesn't print much more than my G23.
