I purchased a good number of 8 round wilson combat mags to use in IDPA... I am currently running an old series 80 colt with some mods by me, and some by wilson combat. I have found that the 8 rounders won't lock into the mag well when loaded with 8 rounds... With the slide open they work and put me into 7+1 condition quickly, but that is really not the reason for 8 round mags.... I had a simple stovepipe that became a nightmare as I needed to drop a mag to clear it... then with the slide down I could not get a mag seated.. I also loaded the pistol and never got the pistol really loaded as the mag stopped short... of locking in. When the timer went off I got a click... and was stuck until I got a 7 round mag in place ( which took a couple seconds to figure out) . All in all whatever potential advantage from 8 rounds was washed away with the clock running while I sorted out problems.

Locking the slide back in the middle of a shoot is tricky while keeping the muzzle in a safe direction... and in this case that would be the only fix short of pulling the mag and scraping off a round with your thumb and trying again...

What guns fit the 8 rounders fully loaded to lock the mags in place ???? as my older colt did not ..... I have another colt being built... I assume it also will have to stay with 7+1 unless the slide is locked back when being loaded. From now on I will use a seperate mag to load... and then insert a mag with 7 rounds... I won't be burned by this foolishness again.... It was also quite embarrasing as I took a new shooter to IDPA and he ended up beating me with my glock 9mm.... I guessed that the failures cost me 25-30 seconds total on two different shooting strings...

Any of you have similar stories , or know what pistols actually hold 8 + 1... ???????

8-rd. Wilson mags work well in my 70 Series Gold Cup.

My series 80 Colt works fine with Wilson and CMC 8 rounders.
They do need a convincing "shove" to load with a closed slide. The big advantage of the 7 round is the ease of loading...less potential trouble.

But, your problem shouldn't be...something is not right.
Did you change/alter the mag catch? I'm not a gunsmith so hopefully someone signs on with better advice...other than it should work.

Wilson 47D's work fine in my Kimber. The majority of IDPA shooters that I know use them with no problems in various brands of pistols.

i've got a colt commander that was built in the early 70's. i use the 8 round wilsons exclusively with no magazine problems. i've used the wilsons for about 4 years now and would reccomend them to anyone.

I have 20 of the Wilson Combat #47D 8-round mags. 10 for each of my Colts. One is a stainless 1991A1 and the other is a Colt XSE. The Wilson mags work great in both of them. And yes, I load them with 8 rounds, no problems here.

If you really must have 8rd mags, try the McCormick Power Mags. Also the Tripp Research 8rd mags are really designed for 8rds - not cheap but well made. You could salvage your Wilsons by installing the Tripp follower and spring kits. Then they would be 7rd mags that work.

i second DBR, chip power mags are good choice. i can lock in a fully loaded 8 round power mag in my kimber tle, store it in condition 3. cheaper than dirt has them for under $20. they are obviously very sturdy, but they have metal follower not plastic, not good for aluminum frames.

Wilson CQB w/Wilson 8-rounder is a-okay.

Girlfriend, who shoots better than I do, taught me to slam it.

I will see if the mags lock in my springfield 1911..... the colt series 80 is stock in the mag catch and those related parts... The pistol is high in rounds , but the 7 rounders work perfectly / the 8 rounders require you to clamp the mag base and the top of the slide and compress them until the mag locks in place... this requires enough pressure to partially crush the top round in the mag.... not a move likely to be accepted in a match...

I have purchased many wilson 8 round ,mags recently and now own about 15 of them... inc ten that are still new in wrapper... I hope the colt series 70 that I am having built is better in this area...

The only 1911 I have ever owned shot or heard of that didn't function more reliably with Wilsons 8rnd mags was a well used Sistema-Colt.

My Kimber works well with Wilson 8rnd mags. Also I have no problem with 10rnd mags. All magazines works fine.

I use Wilson 7-8 and 10 round Mags in all three of my Kimbers The 8 and 10 are used in my full sized Custom and the Tac Pro the seven is use in my Ultra Carry. They have never had any signs of any problem.:)

I've ran nothing but Wilson 47D's in all of my 1911's (Colt's and Springfields) without any problems. You must just be having a little bad luck.

I have the same problem with my Mil-spec, if you can call it a problem. With a fully loaded Wilson 8 rounder, it takes a lot of pressure to get it to seat with the slide closed.

I've taken to only loading 7 in them so that if I ever do have to tactical reload, for whatever reason, I don't have the problem. The seven rounder that came with the pistol doesn't have this problem.

If memory serves me, the SA 1911's that are made for the FBI are being sent out with 7 rounders for reliability. Maybe this has something to do with that.

i run the wilson 8 round mags in my Caspian. i have 10 - 6 with the small pad and 4 with the big pad and all work great. in fact, the 7 rounders won't seat fully due to the wierd custom mag well on the pistol.

i will be happy to take the wilsons off your hands. if the price is fair i will even pay shipping;)

I use Chip McCormick Shooting Star 8 round mags and Shooting Star followers in Colt 7 round magazines for an extra round.I think the newer Colt mags now hold 8 rounds as well.

Chip McCormick now call all their 45 mags "Power Mags" and the 38 Super and 10mm mags are still called Shooting Star.I'm not sure what the currebt 8 round conversion kit is called.

Shooting Star and Power Mags are 2 different mags offered by McCormick. Both are available in .45ACP

Hey Quant! How much "worse off" might you have been, had you been using one of your "inferior" Glocks, as opposed to that "superior" 1911? :)

Hey WalterGA:

I don't think Quantico needs to change guns to solve a fairly simple mag problem. 1911s have their place in the hierarchy of things and Glocks have their's. They are just not the same. Some Glocks, including some of mine, have had their own share of mag problems. I think of my Glocks as disposable bullet launchers. My 1911s are heirlooms.

Tried a "shooting star" 8-rounder with my Kimber and a 7-rounder with my Dad's officers model Colt. Kimber became an instant jammamatic and the slide would not even close on the Colt. Returned both mags to the dealer and got a refund.

Then tried Wilson 8-rounders with great success -- they function perfectly in my Kimber. No "slam" required either -- they seat nicely. Dad's Officer's model runs great with the Wilson 7-rounder as well.

My SW1911 came with two Wilson 8-round mags. They work fine.

I have 18 to 20 Wilson mags. I only buy the 7 rounders. I've never had a problem.

It was a joke! (Notice the :)???) My 1911's literally are heirlooms...and that's a good thing, as I doubt I'd ever buy one. (Well, maybe one, just to have one)

Check your mag release, you might need some adjustment or replace it with a new one. 47D should work with most 1911, my SA likes it fine. squadman

Email your problem to Wilson's info@wilsoncombat.com and see what they have to say. I'd also ask if they use different followers for different capacity mags, if so make sure your eight rounders have the right follower.

are the 47Ds well broke in?, I have had a few that were fairly stiff but they worked in very quickly. I use 47Ds loaded with 8 rounds exclusively, with no problems.

My Caspian-framed Briley works fine with Wilson 8's and 10's. I still fail to seat them properly in the middle of a match once (or twice ;e) in a while, but that's my fault.

I have about a dozen that are brand new , so no they are not even close to broken in yet.

Have you emailed Wilson's yet?

ALL MY 8 ROUNDERS WORK WELL-I HAVE NINE OF THEM-LOADED WITH 8 ROUNDS-HOWEVER I HAVE A TEN ROUNDER THAT WANTS TO DISASSEMBLE MY GUN AFTER THE LAST SHOT. SOUNDS CRAZY BUT SLIDE PIN JUMPS OUT. WILSON OFFERED NO TRADE IN ON PRODUCT-ACTUALLY WAS SNOTTY OVER THE PHONE.

1. Send me all your Wilson's and I will trade for an equal number of CMC's.

2. Change your mag release. it is probably out of spec.

Wilson's have worked great in my 1911; McCormick's were terrible. Just goes to show it depends on the gun.
