Well, I ride a Banshee right now, but I soooooooooooo want to get on the street and one of the new R1's or one of the new CBR1000RR's. Need to start off on something smaller though and work on getting my endorsement. BTW, going to Leguna this year?

I ride a BMW K-75 SA; +75k miles on it in 7 years. Been riding since 1970, trained by Omaha PD and rode for several years. Got run over from behind making a right hand turn by a young lady at +65 MPH.

Surgeries and eight years of rehab and I am up riding again in LA traffic. Work as a Federal LEO, no bike, and about to retire.
God has been good to me, be good to others. It works!

2001 Kawasaki KLR650, 2000 Blue Kawasaki ZR-7, and a 1998 Ivory BMW R1200C. The BMW is awesome, but the KLR will go anywhere, do anything...within reason. The ZR-7?...........it's ok. I was just about to purchase a 2002 British Racing Green Triumph Sprint St. But...cooler heads prevailed. {edited 11/20/04} Okay...so maybe cooler heads didn't prevail. After 2 months the seller called me back, and we struck what I felt was a smokin' deal! So now I also own a 2002 Sprint ST...and it's a great ride!

i'm 60 this august 31st. took me a long time (43 yrs and 4 mc's )to find the right one. look on the FZ1 board and you'll find that over 80% of it's members are engineers. it's popular for a good reason.
it's not the greatest mc in any one class but overall, it does everything exceptionally well.
i use mine as a commuter, mostly, with fun on the back roads on days-off.
i've never even come close to pushing it's limits; don't want to (i stopped at 135MPH with more throttle left) and still have a few "chicken strips" left on the lower side wall of a new tire (they can stay there!)
my fizzy is so quick and nimble, comfortable, and fun i have to go out to the gaarage now and go for a ride!;f c-ya.

2000 Honda RC51. Sato ti exhaust, Dan Kyle forks, WStaab shock, forged pistons, Vortex rearsets, clip-ons, PCII w/ DK map, 15/41 520 conversion, ss brake and clutch lines, painted to match SP1 paint scheme, little (real) carbon fiber here and there, plus all the other odds and ends that can be found over at www.rc51.org. Got it down to right at 400 lbs, from the original 432. Does double duty as commuter/off-hour hooliganism and track day bike.

I just love seeing the cruiser guys faces as they hear the v-twin rumble eminating from my "crotch rocket".;z

Presently ride a 2003 CBR600RR with an ohlins shock, ohlins valves and springs up front and vortex rearsets. Its awesome, my best bike yet. I am faster at every track I have been to on this bike than either of my previous "more powerful" bikes...

Formerly rode a 2001 CBR929RR with Ohlins rear, DK forks, ohlins damper, moriwaki exhaust and vortex rearsets... 18,000 flawless miles

after the 929, I got a 2001 RC51 with a traxxion front end, a penske triple clicker rear, ohlins damper, 520 conversion, 16/44 gears, moriwaki high mounts, vortex rearsets and clip ons, power commander and other cosmetic mods... 11,000 flawless miles

Saving for a full arata and a PCIIIUSB for the 600RR now, that'll take off 10 lbs and add about 10 HP...

Its a 1973 850 Norton Commando.
The Yamaha 650 twin was a copy of the Triumph Bonneville, and the other British motorcycles (Norton, BSA) that were popular in the 60's.
Before Japan ruled the day in bikes, the alternative to the harley davidson was a "limey bike"
I remember the XS 650 well. It was really a better bike then the British twins of the day. It had better electrics, better carbs, better brakes. Yamaha built it for a number of years, starting in the late 60's as I recall. One of the last versions of it were the Specials. This was one of Japans first steps into the world of "customs". The original xs 650's looked very much like Triumph Bonnevilles. If memory serves, the Yamaha had cases that split horizontally rather then vertically. This keep oil leaks in the Yamaha nonexistent, as opposed to our U.K. bikes.
Doesn't your bike have a dry sump engine?
I rode a Yamaha 650 my brother in law owned. It was a buzzer as I remember. Just like the Bonnevilles of the day.
The Norton had a rubber mounted engine, and although it shakes at idle, its pretty smooth on the highway.
And its a kick start only bike.
I like your bike. Except that king and queen seat.

I've done some suspension mods to the bike, as the stock factory suspension is *****. I've ridden the "Dragon" at Deals gap many times

tailofthedragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com) and I live for the twisties. This road in TN is world famous, and features 318 turns in 11 miles, perfectly paved blacktop. Any thoughts and suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks xrated. Track days are great, you will love them. Also, once you experience riding fast on the racetrack, fast or aggressive riding on the streets will never again hold the same appeal it once might have.

I think it's a good idea to have some track school experience under your belt before you start participating in open track days, as the formal training they provide is invaluable in isolating bad form, bad habits, etc, and accelerating the learning curve of your track riding skill. Trackschool is the best investment value/"modification" towards increased performance on the track you can persue.

Keith Code's California Superbike School is outstanding. The closest Keith comes to Missouri is Barber in Birmingham. Not only is this a world class road racing course, but what you learn from the Superbike school will provide you with a much better platform upon which to build your experience with trackdays. There are other track schools, but I am more familiar with the ones that operate on the west coast.

Also, most track day hosting organizations run different groups on the track based on track experience, skill level, and speed, to minimize closing speeds from the faster to the slower riders. There is usually a "race" or fast group (A Group), an intermediate or B Group, and a novice (slow or C Group), that alternate in 20-30 minute track sessions. Almost always best to do your first track day starting in the slow group, and have a plan, something to work on. At first, it is usually learning a new track, and then things like working on braking, turn-in points, turn exits, "lines", throttle control, shifting, body positioning, turn entry speed, etc. Decide which one you are working on that particular session and then practice it.

I have been doing track days for quite a while, and in addition to my regular occupation, I work for a very popular So Cal track day company as a staff rider/instructor. If you have questions about track school or trackdays in general, or any specific questions, I am happy to help in any way I might be able.

BTW, I am aware of Deals Gap, although I never rode it since I live in So Cal, but we have a few roads with some turns here and there as well.

Eyespy, thank you for your very informative reply post. The schools are something to consider. Time off from work will be the difficult part. I just started a new career (selling motorcycles) after spending 30 years in one place as an Electrician. Old job...5 weeks of vacation a year vs. new job....one week this year. Any way, thanks again and I'm sure that you guys have some awesome roads out that way. We have quite a few members on our CBR1100XX.org web forum that live out there, and are bragging about the roads and posting pics of them. Maybe someday!!

I actually was looking at Harley-Davidson bikes when I test rode the kingpin. Although HD has (I feel) better quality of finish, the kingpin and Vegas blow their socks off when it comes to riding. Still, my second choice is the Deuce. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase, and the stage one set-up and power commander have given a big gain in power over what it already had. Please remember that everyone is looking for something different in a bike, something only they can define. That's why so many brands are so successful.

I see snow!;f (on the Jeep out the garage) Course I've got almost a foot on the ground outside and its -12F up here in Alaska.

Yet all I can think about lately is getting a new bike! last week there was a '76 BMW R75/7 in excellant condition at our newly opened harley shop that was for sale at $1500, I came back the next day after thinking of it as being too old and worn out but after a lot of reading on the web I found out how the Bimmers hold out in the long run, in other words it was a great deal for a starter bike, but I found out the next morning it was sold, bummer.
We do have a BMW motorcycle dealership in Anchorage, I'll hop over there one of these days and see whats available used.

I'm still gonna get the K1200 S in 2005, gotta have the best ya'know!

Nice Rex Schrocat! I have a "Faster Green" 2001 1200R myself. :)

Actually, I would have bought a Red Rex if that color had been available in 2001. I like the red as it reminds me of the old
GPZ-550s and 1100s of my youth.

Regardless of color, the Rex is a sweet ride.

How do you like tose Confederates? (I assume you like 'em since you have 2). I have only seen the Hellcat in magazine and at bike shows, but it looks pretty sweet (and I am not a cruiser guy). I like the fact they are trying to put some sportbike elements in thier bikes, instead of just being ANOTHER Harley wannabe. I wish them luck with their company and hope it does well. I am still holding out for a REAL American made sportbike (not a Buell). Preferably one with more than 2 cylinders, just to break the American bike stereotype.

Great bikes, fun to ride either cruising or doing some twisties (and where I live its alot of twisites) so whichever is your style this bike is happy doing it...would not mind adding a 3rd, you see the new F113? If you ever get a chance to demo before we bought like we did... enjoy!

I love those radially mounted brakes. Man if I had that kind of cash, it would be mine.

Now if only Honda would make the VTX technocruiser, I would have 2 cruisers I would seriously think about buying (before there were none).

Between my bike, and the R1200ST and the K1200RS, I'd still pick my bike (but the R1200ST looks SOOOOoo Pretty!)

The K1200S (http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/k1200s/gallery/im18.jpg) would be a definate option (if I had oodles of $$ lying around) - but I prefer the boxer engine... (Just personal prejudice.)

I would love to have a K1 or an old Norton... but one bike is all I can ride, and I don't have a garage.

Well I finally did it, a new 2005 FLTRI Road Glide after several years of looking. Pearl yellow. No pics yet, but this is the HD website photo:

Had to part with the BMW since the local dealership was pulled. Didn't want to have to go to Baton Rouge or Birmingham for major service.

I was heading to bed the night I posted the above and realized it wasn't the "Wide Glide" model. But I couldn't remember the correct model name I kept sticking on Dyna Glide which I knew was also wrong, (and didn't want to check on the Internet......was trying to remember on my own and couldn't)! ;J Just was asking my brother as well and he couldn't remember either. At this rate it won't be long until I'm taking my dad's Alzheimer medicine for myself!?!

The Wide Glides are nice too, but it's the lines of the Road Glide (as well as the Road King and the Road King Classic) that appeal to me the most. The Ultra Classics are nice for amenities and luggage capacity, but the looks of the above mentioned bikes are "cleaner" in my opinion.

The yellow pearl color is striking. (My Valkyrie is yellow and ivory, looks kind of like a big "nine ball". Actually looks better than it sounds!) When we came back from Alaska in "97" nearly all the Harley dealers in my area had a two year waiting list for the big twins. (The dealer or two that didn't wanted nearly $5,000. over MSRP for one, which I refused to pay.) So while looking I bumped into my current 1999 Valkyrie, (we had bought my wife's bike first). The Valkyrie had 159 miles on the odometer and the previous owner only had it for three months. Then he traded it in for the Valkyrie Interstate model. I saved nearly $3,000. on the bike, it had some extras on it, and I received the three year factory warranty minus the three months of course.

Once again nice bike and I hope you enjoy, stay safe!

Dave

You've got a quick bike in that Valk, and a great deal it sounds like. I agree that it used to be hard to get MSRP on a Harley, that's one reason I was looking for a couple of years. But now the market is more saturated, so you don't have to go far to find an MSRP dealer.

Cool bike, but I'm curious, when are you putting a real swing arm on it? ;f

KyleB
05-31-2005, 21:56
khaitran, the speedo stops reading at 186 regardless of how fast it actully gets up to, and there not accurate to begin with. It will top the 186 before it redlines in 5th though.

45acp4me, I don't plan on streching it, this is my street bike, I still enjoy riding wheelies, and hitting curves and such.

I ride some of my buddies drag bikes at the track, and it's fun, but I work nearly every time there at the track so I can't really justify it to myself to build a drag bike I can hardley ever ride you know?

Thanks for the comments!

Don't think I posted it in this thread yet; sold the Wing and bought a Concours in February. I love it! At least 200 pounds lighter, fast, fast, fast, just think about it and it dives into a turn. Between the saddlebags and tankbag, I can carry plenty of stuff, and best of all, no chrome to polish.
