View Full Version : Got a new P9--gun store said no to Night Sights???
I picked up a new Kahr P9 last night for 575 out the door. I asked the guy if they had any night sights in stock that I could go-ahead and have installed, he proceeded to tell me that "nobody puts night sights on their carry gun" Now I'm no expert, but all of the articles I read seem to always mention the fact that 90% of self-defensive situations occur in low-light conditions. I have always had night sights on my guns, if they did not come with them, I put them on. So, how would you rate the importance of night sights on your carry weapon?

I have night sights on both my carry guns - but there is some truth about the need for them when the pushing-comes-to-pulling, as you'll only have time to draw and point-shoot... most of the time there is absolutely no time to aim.
Also, the trigger pull on my new Kahr is sooooo smooth! My previous 2 Kahr pistols where not this smooth.

ALL of my defensive guns get night sights!
It’s better to have & not need then it is to need & not have!
Imagine that, another “gun shop commando” spouting crap-n-poop… ;Q

I totally agree, better to have and not need...
And if I owned a gun shop, and someone asked if I had night sights to put on a gun, I don't think I would try and talk myself out of another 100 worth of sales for the day. I did'nt ask if he thought I needed them, just if he had them.

In my CCW class in Ohio, they demonstrated night sight effectiveness in our shooting segment by turning out the lights and having us shoot down range in low light, no light and with flashlight. Absolutely put NS on any carry gun.

P.S. I failed to mention on my last post that one of my carry guns (S&W), in addition to night sighs, I also have CT Laser Grips.
on both my glocks and ordered (b-a-c-k ordered) for my PM9.

I also put night sights on all of my carry guns for the same reasons as listed above. Just try shooting in the dark or low light situations for yourself. You will not need some "gun shop commando's" advice to see their usefullnes.

Don't get me wrong, I am going to put some Mepro's on it, I just thought it funny that someone that would make somemore money by selling and installing them, advised against it.

Hi guys have a question about night sites. If it's too dark for you to see your sites, without night sites, isn't it too dark to see your target.

Yep - Just pull it out and let go couple rounds at the direction of the voice saying " Gimme your money, honey".

Listers,
All three of my carry guns have night sights.
Take a couple of Night/ low light classes to see (or not see) your front sight and rear sight.
Let's see. Black front sight, black rear sight, dark clothed or shadowed target. Heinie straight eight slant pros let me hit poppers in low light out to about 40 yards consistantly. ( I understand you should focus on the front sight ,but in low light , you need to line up the front AND rear sight to be on target and yes 40 yards will probably never happen unless Murphy's law come into play).
Flashlight shooting is a better bet but I suppose you could be in a situation where your target can barely be seen ( or his muzzle flash ) and while you may be violating safety rule # 4 ( be sure of your target), you could think I am not completly sure of my target but these bullets keep whizzing past me, so I may take the shot.
I would get them, no question.
You might not have a flashlight.
Your flashlight could die.
Ambient light is usually around ( enough to make out a target).
Bad guys like darkness.
Your target will probably be close. ( I disagree with the point shooting remark but if yellow fluid is running down my leg, who knows how I will shoot). Hell, you may be shooting from retention, but it should be followed up by sighted fire . I hope I will react as I have trained ( front sight -tritium if need be, press).

Get Training. Keep training. Train some more. And some more.

I carry ALL my guns with a NS on the front only. I use plain black on the rears (personal preference here folks). While I won't get sucked into the debate over the effectiveness of Night Sights, I will tell you this....I sleep just fine knowing that if I open my eyes in the dark, that little green light is staring back at me. It makes it very easy to locate your gun in the dark. My G30 w/Triji green front and Novak plain black rear combat sights and a Surefire E2 sleep side by side. I think learing how to use a good tactical flashlight is a must, but I also think night sights are a good option.

DenverBob,
Question. Have you shot in very lowlight with the front tritium only?
I thought of going this route and was steered to the 2 dot Heinies and am glad I did. ( but never did try front tritium only)
It seems to me that it would take additional time to make sure that front sight is somewhere in the rear notch for sighted fire.
I also like to open my eyes and see that green glow but also slide an M3X on the rail so I don't have to grab for a light.

I have. I also do a lot of dry fire drills in low light. Again, this is a personal preference. I find markings (let alone tritium intserts) on my rear sights to be too distracting. I want my focus on the front sight and the target. As much as I pactice, I feel quite certain that if my front sight is on the target, I'm going to hit it. The aquisition is MUCH faster for me when only focusing on front sight and target. If I need the rear sights in the picture, I'll illuminate them from behind with the Surefire. Also, when you illuminate the target with a flashlight, the rears form a perfect sillouette to sight with. BTW...I also prefer NOT mounting my light on my weapon. It takes away too many options (like holding the light away from your COM to draw fire). A BG will most likely fire at the light if you flash it at him, so I train by holding the light away from my body for initial flash (so I can ID my target, and draw fire away from me). I'm not saying my way is better, I'm just saying it works better for me.
