According to Glock FAQ (http://www.glockfaq.com/gunsmithing.htm) , a G22 can be fitted with a 9mm upper. If I understand correctly, if I buy a G17, 9mm slide assembly and 9mm mags, I can use these on my G22 lower frame.
Question #1. Am I correct that a G17 slide assembily will function correctly on a G22 frame?
Question #2. If the answer to question #1 is yes and you have experience with this conversion, what are your thoughts about this conversion?
Thanks in advance for your response.

yes it will work ..... but if you are buying a new upper and 2 new mags . just buy a new 17 you are looking at over 400 bucks for just the upper and 2 mags
Nothing wrong with your idea but it is expensive.
A cheaper route would be to purchase a 9mm conversion barrel for your G22. Just drop it in, stoke up a few G17 mags (or slip a few 9mms into one of your G22 mags), and start shooting.
Conversion barrels can be bought from a variety of sources. Lone Wolf Dist., Olympic Arms, Federal, etc. Federal work well and run $95. The rest are somewhat more spendy.

Either way, don't forget to change the ejector.
I have the lone wolf conversion barrell and it works great, you don't need to change anything else not even the ejector/extractor. If it's a range gun your 40 mags will work fine and fit more rounds in them but I also have a G19 so I use those mags some too.

Way too expensive to buy a whole upper. As already mentioned, get a CONVERSION barrel from one of the barrel makers, not to be confused with a regular stock Glock 9mm barrel, add a couple G17 mags and you're done. Don't change the extractor or ejector unless the previously mentioned setup fails. Most have reported great success with just the barrel and mags especially but not only when using higher quality barrels. Barrels I would personally recommend are Jarvis, Bar-Sto and KKM. Others are avialable at a lesser price.

Are 9mm uppers exactly the same as 40 uppers, except for extractor/ejector and the opening in the front for the barrel?

Close, the ejector is in the receiver/frame. The firing pin, spring loaded bearing, size of breech face and extractors are different(I thinks thats everything?).
My G17 upper and mags worked flawlessly on my G22 lower with the 40 ejector.(I still have the G17 upper somewhere?) A friend has the Lone Wolf conversion barrel in his G22 and it works great with the .40 extractor and ejector......
