View Full Version : My new Yugo 59/66A1 SKS from AIM Surplus
This is one of the "select" grade. Log book says that it has been fired four times (four total rounds) since leaving the factory in 1980:

I've been swimming in cosmoline since yesterday afternoon^7
VERY nice! I may be ordering one of those on Monday :)

That thing looks fantastic. :)
Ok, so I DID order one of those on Monday ;f
Manufactured in 1979 (fiancee approves - that's the year she was born :) ), log book seems to show five firings since then. It has five entries, at least, I guess that's what it means.
I hear you on the cosmoline bit - nothing I've bought so far has been that soaked. I've wiped it down as best I can - will have to wait until Sunday to disassemble and really get into it.
Question though - was yours imported by Century as well? Was surprised to see their stamp on the barrel.
Yep. Imported buy Century.
Put your SKS outside in the hot sun for a few hours - a good bit of the cosmoline will run out when the metal heats up. You may have to wait since it's supposed to rain in the Carolinas tomorrow.
Has Century been selling these on their own? I bought my Mosins there, but after having one of their salesmen call me each and every week since, I decided that I might shop elsewhere.
I need to put together a "cosmo cooker" for this SKS and my three Mosins, but haven't had the time yet. Hopefully it will be nice and clear on Sunday so I can do some melting.
I shot the SKS yesterday. Oh my goodness, but this is one sweet shooting C&R. Sights were dead on and it functioned flawlessly. I'm haveing a hard time deciding which gun in the collection is my favorite shooter. Right now the SKS and the SAR-2 are neck and neck, with the M39 Mosin close behind.
I haven't seen these at Century, but I do most of my C&R buyng from AIM since they give great service.
Here's a link to help you decipher the log book entries:

Here's mine, post-wipedown but not yet broken down and cleaned.

Figured I'd add a shot of the current C&R rifle stash:

What is on the end of the barrel, is it some type of flash suppressor? A brake? Why is it different from the other SKS's?
Also, I heard the Yugo's are the only SKS not Chrome lined. Is this true?

22mm grenade launcher and the rifle is not chrome lined and a little heavier. There's a ladder sight for the grenade launcher, a rubber butt pad, and the folding 11.5" bayonet. You can't see it, but it also has flip up tritium night sights, and no they don't glow in the dark but still help. Also less apparent is the gas shut off valve which is used when the grenades are to be launched - very common for someone to have it to the off position and rifle becomes a bolt action as opposed to a semi-auto and wonder why the rifle isn't working correctly.

Yugos don't have chrome lined bores, so make sure you clean it well after shooting corrosive ammo.
ColSanders you need to hurry and get one of these. They are only $100-150 and they will be gone in no time.
Has anyone bought one of the $89 shooter grade rifles from AIM? Thinking about one of those to play with, and putting the nicer one up.

Yeah, so I bought one of the select grade Yugos!!
Didn't know about this thread until it was pointed out to me and this is what I had originally posted.

I could not pass up the deal on these. I think they are great backup/woods/plinker/trunk guns, and they are reliable and cheap to shoot as well.
I honestly thought about getting a second, one of the cheaper ones... I should have. Oh well, I will consider this my backup to my AR15. ;)
Great thread!

I love it.!! It was the $89.00 and had freee shipping!
The 'shooter' grade is tops. Get that one. Mine only had one or two scratchs on the stock, and a tad bit of buling wear on the mag. Numbers parts everything matched! I am glad that I did not buy a more $$$$ one, as I dont think it would of ben all that differnt.
The Cosmo is the fun part, it took me two days to get it out, then when I shot it the first time, and it heated up, MORE came out! Ahhhhhhhh. They are fun, and I am glad I own one.

Hey, you guys who got yours from AIM, does your serial numbers match on your log book and rifle? Because mine do not match...^8

Also, what did you do with your sling? Mine is kinda smothered in cosmoline... I would like to clean it up a bit, any good ways to clean it up, washer??
Yes my log book did match the rifle. Everything matched just like I expected it to.
I would definitley contact Erik at AIM and give him a chance to make it right.
The sling that came with mine was used and had some cosmoline on it. I soaked it in Naptha paint thinner to dissolve the cosmoline, washed it in the sink in Dawn dishwashing detergent and then in the washing machine with Oxy-Clean. Now it's April fresh;f ;f

I took the new SKS out shooting today and I was about as impressed as I could have been. Awesome gun!!! One of the best purchases I have made! I need another!!!
So do ya/ll have C&R's or a FLL license?? I want to get one but don't have either license.;g
I don't have a C&R - and that helps keep my addiction in check.
I just have the rifles shipped to my local gun shop and pay them a small fee to do the paperwork. I like the folks who run the place, and don't mind them making a little for their trouble.
If I got my C&R, I'd have to buy a bigger house and that would be way too expensive;f ;f ;f

I have thought about getting my C&R, maybe someday.
<-- C&R license. Very much worth it, for ease of ordering.

You are killing me.
I've looked at this thread about 100 times in the last 30 hours.
I filled out my C&R paperwork mailed it to BATFE.
Heck I can't wait a month for the paper work to come back, can I?
Shoot no.
Came back home looked again and went straight to my FFL to have them mail a copy to AIM. I even online ordered one from AIM with a case of ammo before they got my FFL's paper. They were nice enough to hold my order till the proper paper work comes in.
Darnit now I'll have to wait a couple of weeks to shoot one.

I know how you feel. I thought about getting my C&R before I ordered my SKS but I knew I would be dying during the wait and I was afraid that they would run out of them before I got my paperwork finished...

That is a very nice looking SKS. Congrats on your purchase. Every time I go to the fun shows, I look at the AK's and the SKS's and they never look that good :/ Actually I am glad they don't because I'd have to get one and I can't afford one right now.

Then by all means do not go to the AIM Surplus website. You can get a used one for slightly more than a full tank of gas.

I bought one also. It was in better shape than described and as an added bonus came with a log book.
I've purchased several rifles from AIM and have never been disappointed. I'm waiting on a MN 91/30 now.

Whoa! Even the $89 one came with a log? I need to hurry up and refill the slush fund so I can order one. Along with another M44, of course ;f

OK my Yugo SKS finally showed up at my FFL Thursday. I was on the west coast but since my FFL is closed on weekends I decided to take the red-eye home so that I could pick it up before next week.
Like the others, it was loaded up with cosmoline eveywhere, but was in incredable shape for a rifle of it's age.
I wiped as much off of it as I could with paper towels and then sprayed about 1/2 a can of break free on it.
Reassembled it, greased snd oiled it up and went to the range and burned through 80 flawless and surprisingly accurate rounds.
I heated it up a good bit and the remaining cosmoline started flowing out of places that the break free didn't reach.
The #s match. The receiver, stock and moving parts are all in excellent shape as advertised.
I am as happy as a lark with this $149 value purchase from AIM, but can tell already I should have ordered 2 cases of ammo.
;)
My friends,
These babies are the real deal............they are without a doubt the best C&R's I've ever seen. I may get another one ............
Shh!! Don't tell them that! I need time to build up the slush fund so I can buy some more ;f

I had it out at the range again today and several old timers were commenting that mine was "in the best shape of any they'd ever seen for an SKS".
It really does look like a new rifle - well I guess it is new as far as round count goes anyway.
I shot another 120 rounds and it was flawless. The grouping was around 6-8 inches (not counting a couple of fliers when I jerked it) at 100 yds with open sights and Russian made hunting ammo. Someone with better eyesight and/or a better shot could do much better I am sure.
Funny thing is that the trigger pull of my SKS is smoother than my Bushmaster AR-15.
Anyway like scromer said, I too am thinking about getting another one as soon as my C&R shows up.
I am going to buy one of the $89 ones pretty soon... and lucky me I live an hour away from Middletown so I simply can drive down and pick it up ;j ^5
Anyway, I was wondering how much of an effect the cosomoline has on painting the stock. I don't have very much experience with surplus stuff and don't know too much about the cosmoline. I would like to maybe buy a couple and do some fancy work on the stocks and actions to dress them up (similar to the style of some 10/22s Ive seen).
What is some good stuff to clean this off with? I use a mild break cleaner to clean my other guns. Or if there is something else I can use on the wood stocks to prep it for a car style paintjob, please list any sites I might want to look at or tips you have.
Thanks.
Easy-Off oven cleaner - after you wipe most of the comsoline off of the wood. Also, you can buy a gallon of NAPTHA paint thinner that works well to dissolve cosmoline.
I used mineral spirits on the metal parts, but I'm worried about using it on the stock. I've baked mine in the sun a few times, and that's gotten a lot of the cosmoline out.

I too just bought a Yugo 59/66A1 at a gun show last week here, for $131 out the door. It was considered "shooter grade". It only has a small ding on the left side near the grip. I have gone thru almost 2 cans of gunscrubber to get the cosmoline off. When you flip the grenade site all the way up, Is it hard or easy to get it to fold yours back down? Mine is very hard to fold it back down when the pins lock in place.

Stiff, but not too hard. The first time I raised it though, it did take a smack to get it to fold back down. That was before I cleaned it up.
Sun does wonders for cosmoline.

Who invented Cosmoline???????

YES!!! i own 2 yugos...bought select grade and a shooters grade. ended up putting a ati folder on the shooter grade and added a red dot, sawed off the bayonet and grenade sight. if only i could find a reliable 30 rd mag. yugo's are great rifles...especially for the money. ive burned through thousands of rounds and never jammed.
