View Full Version : Pros & Cons of getting a C&R in CA
Hi all,
I'm not an avid collector yet but I do own one MN M44 and might by another.
What are the pros and cons of the C&R license for a CA resident?
Does having a license effect what mods you can make to a C&R gun?
Thanks!

Go for it! C&R FFLers in other states will be able to buy from a more diverous selection, but you will do alright. One or two C&R FFL transfers will have paid for your license. The ATF isn't too worried about C&R Folks unless it's obvius they are dealing not collecting.
Waterdad,
Isn't your post suggesting he deal??? I'm sure that's not allowed!;P
I think he's implying that if you buy one or two C&Rs via mail order, it pays for the $30 C&R license fee because of the money saved on DROS fees if the person had bought the rifles from an instate FFL. Not to mention that often, when you order a C&R via Internet/mail order, you will get it in less than 10 days, which is better than the 10-day waiting period if you had purchased the gun through an instate FFL.
That being said, fill out the app for your C&R FFL, 333. It's definitely worth it. I've already outspent my budget on C&Rs and reloading equipment for the next month and a half. Come September I plan on getting a K-31, Darrell's scout mount, scope, and the dies to reload for it. Also been itching to get another Mauser variant to shoot milsurp ammo ever since I scout scoped my VZ24.

Ocab got it right. I've never met a C&R FFLer who was content with just one purchase.
I just bought my first Swedish Mauser, and that got me motivated to fill out the C&R application I've had sitting around.
How long do you think it will take to process? The seller agreed to hang on to the piece until the licenses comes through. Hope that isn't too long. But it costs me $45 to do an out of state xfer plus two gallons of gas because of the stupid 10-day wait in California.

The ATF has some hard workers and some lazy ones....Get them to commit to a timeline and then make them live up to it. It took me almost four months, but my faxes, emails, and phone calls created the needed pressure to get my licesnse. I've hear of C&Rs issued in less than 2 weeks.
