I have a Springfield Copact 1911. I like the gun very much but it didn't work right from the box. The usual SA extractor problems. Replaced it with a Wolff extractor and Wilson mags. 3000 plus rounds through it with no problems. Like the gun so much I had Accurate Plating and Weapons hard chrome it for me. Very nice job. Well the damn painted on finish on the frame just flaked right off! So I was going to send it back tpo have the frame plated. My buddy who is a local gunsmith took the gun apart. Well the bushing's holding the grip screws stripped. He did not torque them hard. They just gave. Also a part was missing from the frame (a pin). Also that pos painted on finish was all over the inside of the gun.
Anyways I sent it back to SA. It's been gone 3 weeks. I called them two days ago and they said the repairs were complete
but my slide needed to be refinished! I asked why and the customer rep got real nervous and told me something happened to the slide during repair. The slide didn't need any work. She said their Pro Shop would refinish it and it would be back in twp weeks. All's I can say is the slide better come back as nice as it left. Why did they even mess with the slide? Damn!

That is the third post I've read regarding flaking finish on the SA,
I would assume SS would not have a finish problem ?

Also a part was missing from the frame (a pin).

You lost me on that one, since I thought anything that had a pin should be holding something else in. Could this be a hole on the ILS main spring housing?

My hammer strut broke last night on my SA 1911. When I took it apart there was no pin where the MHS cup would normally be held back..only a hole. I learned from 1911 tuner over at THR that the ILS doesn't have a retainer pin for the cup..that hole is there in order to help with takedown.

Anyway..sorry to hear about your woes. I love my 1911..but she's going to lose just about all of her MIM parts.

When did Wolff start making extractors?

Wait a minute.

You sent the pistol to be chrome plated to a third party correct?

So now the finish is flaking off?

Whos fault is it? Spring Field Armory? or Accurate Plating and Weapons ?

The finish s not flaking off. SA admitted that they damaged the finish while working on the gun. I give them credit for fessing up. Alot of companies would have just sent it back damaged. I meant A Wilson bulletproof extractor, not Wolff. I was venting when I posted, not thinking real straight.
The gunsmith that took it apart said that a pin was missing somewhere in the mainspring set-up. I'm not familiar enough with the 1911's to know which pin he was talking about. Struck me as strange also that the gun functioned with a pin missing. I'm just upset because their was nothing wrong with the slide. And the chrome job by Accurate Plating is first rate. I didn't count on having it ruined by the gunsmiths at SA.

The gunsmith that took it apart said that a pin was missing somewhere in the mainspring set-up.

No pin in the SA with the ILS, just a takedown hole. So nothing was missing on yours. On a stock Colt MSH, there is a pin there.

Who's the one who had parts replaced with aftermarket and sent it to an aftermarket refinisher, and had a local gunsmith work on the gun, and he SAYS he didnt strip the screws. All of which could have serious repercussions on a guns reliability, safety, and accuracy? Now Springfield is trying to fix the pistol you destroyed, and you’re blaming them?

All’s you had to do was send the gun back to Springfield, they would have had PROFESSIONAL gunsmiths fixed the gun for free or give you a new one, there guns are covered by a lifetime warranty.

You should be extremely happy with Springfield Armory for treating you as well as they have, any other manufacture would have told you where up ***** creek because of all the after market junk and aftermarket spray paint job YOU did voids the warranty. Springfield is going above and beyond for you, your lucky they are even touching your gun.

I'll admit that my Springfield GI was not reliable right out of the box.
You have to understand that the 1911A1's need a break in period, their not like glocks.

Once I gave the gun a cleaning and put new lube in it, its 100%, the reason they always say to clean a gun before you shot it is because the oil from the factory will dry up over time and could cause malfunctions.

Anyone who reads this post will see that it was your chrome job that did the gun in.

Sean,
you must have problems understanding the English language. The chrome job was done months ago by Accurate Plating. I had it done by them because they do excellent work (and they do chrome work for Springfield Arms BTW). The gun is a carry piece and the finish from Springfield Armory wasn't holding up well. The chrome has been fine. I was going to have the frame chromed also because the original coat on the frame (note the sprayed on coating which is how the gun comes from SA, not a coating I had put on) was literally peeling off. It was so bad the
painted on finish BY SPRINGFIELD ARMS (emphasis so Sean will understand) was oozing into the internals of the gun and affecting my guns trigger pull. I don't understand why SA doesn't just anodize the frame dark like most makers. I guess to save money. I as many others have also had to send my XD-9 back for refinishing because the bluing looked like it had been painted on by a monkey!
The gunsmith in question is well known in this area and does good work. The bushings stripped on the aluminum frame under almost no pressure. In case you don't get it Sean their was no problem with the slide. It was the cheap finish applied by the maker and some kind of problem with the hardening of the frame that caused the bushings to strip. It had nothing to do with the chrome job I had done. And I did commend SA for fessing up and correcting the problem. In fact I talked to the Custom Shop today and the young lady there informed me the original person I had talked to earlier in the week had written up the wrong part for refinishing on the gun. It is the frame that needs refinishing (which is what I was sending the gun out for to begin with) because of the cheap sprayed on finish (again Sean the finish they sprayed on, and are taking responsibility for) is flaking off. Alhough I love the gun I was disappointed that I had to change out the extractor right from the box to get it to work. Extractor problems are very common with SA 1911's. In fact not only did I have problems with the extractor on my 1911 but they had to retune it on my XD-9 to get it working. Nice guns, nice people. But a little better quality control would save us all some heart ache. The life long warranty is one of the reasons I bought SA products. They are very kind and courteous people that stand behind their prouct. This is why I am and will be a customer in the future.
At least when they do get something wrong they make it right. Because it's the right thing to do.

Enough said.
