Took some pistolas' to the range to see how my new bifocals work (not good); my G27, S&W 4040PD and my S/A Micro Compact (steel frame).45 which I have been carrying lately. Probably shot about 125-150 rounds through each during the session. What I came away with was I really don't enjoy shooting a 1911-style pistol anymore, it just doesn't feel good. I do know that I am really liking the G27 again. Comfortable, accurate with the large bullet and good follow-up shots (Now if I can just get it to thin down. Atkins maybe?). The 4040 is a sweet shooter, but I need to find an ammo weight that is more regulated to its sights. All my .40 ammo was 180 grn. and, while a little stout, was still comfortable to shoot in either gun. This surprised me as I am starting to have some problems with arthritis in my hand/wrist and thought that .40 cal. was a more punishing round and that I may have to go back to 9mm. The .40's gave me no problems while the .45 Micro Compact has aggravated the condition in past sessions.

I do like the .45 round though. So it looks like it may be time to finally check out the G36, or maybe wait awhile and see what pops out in a G27 size .45 GAP. Either way it's goodbye 1911s. I'll miss 'em, but only for a little while.

Your interests change, Lord knows mine have - ALOT! There is nothing wrong with thinning your arsenal down to the useful, that's what I did.

If you're a .45 man and like the 27, try the 30. It's awesome.

What type of 1911 are you shooting? I dont like shooting cheap 1911s either, but I prefer to shoot a high end 1911 over tupperware anyday.

Yeah, I don't quite get it. I'm in between G21's, and love them, but my 1911 is such a sweet shooter. It's a more reliable feeder than Chris Farley after a standup comedy gig.

My current carry gun is a Springfield Armory Micro-Compact with a steel frame and night sights. It has been totally reliable and is a great gun. But when I've shot it the past couple times it just doesn't feel right anymore, in fact it hurt. I've had 1911s on and off for a number of years including a modified 1991 Colt and an old Hardballer. I picked up a new full-sized Springfield Loaded that's been nothing but a safe queen since I bought it, but I've never found any 1911 to be a problem for me until recently. Maybe it's just old age.

I had a G30 and loved it, but I sold it for the Micro-Compact because it was just too thick in the grip to effectively CCW with my excess bulges. But I am now considering a G36 as a replacement for the Micro; hoping the combination of a slimmer grip and my shedding of a few extra pounds will still allow me to carry a .45. But that 4040 is a fine gun, if I can just match a good PD ammo to the sights and find a good holster for it.

Oh well, another chapter of "As the Gun Turns" goes into the books.

There's not a single gun I'd trade any of my 1911's for, I may add other guns, but trade a 1911 for one, NO WAY!!....but, to each his own. BTW, I'm 55 and my eyesight isn't what it used to be either, could be just me, but there isn't a gun I can shoot better then a 1911
