View Full Version : Why is SUSE so slow?

Downloaded 9.1 personal, did a default install on a Dell C610, and it is slooow. Slow to boot, slow to load web pages, just plain slow.

I have a desktop to try it on as well as VMware, but I suspect I'm needing to tweak my install options.

Any help for a Linux novice?

The C610 is 1Ghz PIII with 512 RAM

My primary machine is a 1.6 Ghz Pentium M Dell D600 with 1Gig of RAM. Running SUSE in VMware on it is faster than running it "native" on the C610.

Read this post (http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue79/punk.html) from Linux Gazette. It'll walk you through a little hard drive tuning and enabling DMA access (usually turned off by default in most distros, not sure on SUSE) which may help speed things up.

Check the list of running processes with top and see if you've got a CPU or memory hog running. For example, Open Office preloads a bunch of stuff for faster startup.

Make sure the swap partition is actually turned on:
swapon -a. My first ever install of Gentoo ran super slow until I realized I'd never enabled the swap partition. ;f
