I hope this isn't too dumb of a question, but I've seen in many places the M1A and the M14 referred to as the same weapon. What (if any) are the differences?

The biggest difference is that the M1A doesn't have the selector switch that lets the M14 fire in full auto mode.

The real M14 rifles were made by the government armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, 'The Springfield Armory', which is now a museum:

M1A's are made by a civilian company called 'Springfield Armory', in Illinois --> http://www.springfield-armory.com/

There are other companies that make civilian legal, semi-auto rifles that they call M14's also, but they aren't 'real' M14's.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a lot of good quality, free standing pictures of M14 rifles around and pics of M1A's are often used on web sights to illustrate 'an M14' rifle, so it can be a bit confusing.

The M14 had the option of full auto fire. But considering the M14 is very hard to control in full auto, most had the switch removed.

The M1A doesn't have the option. Other than that, they're basically identical.

I believe that a true military M-14 would have a forged receiver, but the SA M-1A has a casting. (i think)

Difference?

Since I was in the service I call them M-14's

Civilians call the M1A1's
