Say there, I just got a used Sig 228. Love it , really accuurate - but the slide doesn't lock back after the last round is fired. I don't think it's a matter of limp-wristing it as none of my other semi-autos have done this to me. So far I only have the one mag that came with it - also used. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi!

I also have a SIG 228, which I got in 1996. Absolutely beautiful piece. With what you've described, 90% of the problems are with the magazine, assuming you're not invariably riding or hitting the slide stop lever with your thumb. Try having someone else shoot your piece, and if it still fails to lock back on the last shot get a new magazine. Believe me, you'll love that gun of yours. ;f

From what I've seen, 9/10 times it's the shooter's grip. If your right thumb is even lightly touching the slide stop, it will not engage the slide after the last round is fired. Make a conscious effort to keep your thumb away from it and you'll probably see the problem disappear. If it still happens, order a few Wolff +10% springs. If the mag isn't factory, buy a factory mag (or six.;)).

Thanks so far. I suspected it could be the magazinie and I'll be sure and check out my grip. Would my being a lefty make any difference?

Then it probably isn't your grip. Be sure to try some hotter ammo, too.

I've taken to cutting the tab off all my glock slide stop levers because my thumb rides directly over it. No more tab, no more problems.

You can still lock the slide back after a very careful check to make sure it's unloaded and just reaching inside the breach and pulling the lever up with your finger. Not the best way to do it, but it beats the slide locking prematurely or not at all.

Hi,
Congrads on the Sig P228, before you do anything to your gun think about what you heard.

All gun makers that do Armorer class teach to do a Saftey and function check on your gun after you work on it. Its a good idea next time to do this before you buy- but normally the fix is cheap to do.

One of the checks is to put an empty mag in and pull the slide back to see if it locks back if not buy a new spring(like oil changes- "you can pay now or it will really cost you later"!!).

You can also load up the mag with dummys or live ammo(at the range I hope?) and pull the side back till you empty the mag throwing tne dummys onto the floor-if it does not lock back -change spring. If it locks back then check your grip, Please do not cut the slide lock-Do Not cut your Nose off to dispite your face-(I will hold my thoughts here on that idea)

I just bought some used LEO mags for my issued Sig Sauer, All the springs needed to be changed. Its a $3.50-8.00 Oil change that will save your life-don't short change your life. I don't even think I gotten Five years on any of my Mags W/O changing them. Yes I buy the longer springs(20 RDS) and cut them down to 2 coils more then standard. You can order the +10 or +15% Wollf, great springs and company but I get the Sigs cheaper from Sig. They might sell to you or just have a gun dealer order them for you both ideas work. I always say Good questions deserve a call to Glock-this case to Sig.

Again Congrads on your puchase, take care.

Oh yes,

The hotter ammo will not work, if the mag spring is weak it will still not lock up in fact it will possibly move so fast your ammo will not pick up(increase slide speed you must use strong mag springs to get the ammo up enough to catch up w/the slide to be picked up. This is why the weaker spring does not lock up -Its too weak at the end to catch the side(thats why some companys call it a "slide catch").

If you were limp wristing it your first clue is it will malfuntion-stove pipe and simmular feeding problems, not the ones you told us.

FYI- Now Go have fun with your new "Tool" ;a

Do you shoot with thumbs high or forward? If so, chances are you are riding the slide stop. If you shoot thumbs forward, try letting your right thumb ride on top of your left one. Thats what I do with my 226.

You might just want to buy an aftermarket slide realease spring, the factory ones are weak anyway.;c

I had the same problem with my 228, and one of my 226 pistols. I got new springs, and new followers and had no more problems out of either of them. You can get pretty good deals on springs from some of the auction sites, or call Sig, they have them. They do cost a bit more from Sig. OR, call MEC-GAR they have them. They are the company that makes the Sig mags, so they will always have them
