the gun however looks cool as all get out, even with the heel clip mag release.

it is a nice looking .45, but i dont know much about them.

looked on gunbroker and didnt find one with any real info.

the vp70z is a butt ugly gun, but i cant help but to like it also. it is d.a.o., polymere frame, and 18 shot mags.......

i realize neither is made any more, but id like to hear some info about them from those in the know.

thanks.

One of the most accurate guns out there. $900 is actually a reasonable price for one.

The HK P9S .45 was a very interesting piece. Very accurate and very reliable but does have some "interesting" handling characteristics. I used to have one but I traded it for cash toward the P220 about 15 years ago. Regretted it ever since. However, I wouldn't pay $900 for it. Considering that I bought one brand stankin' new for $300 way back when.

But then some people thinks that anything that got HK stamped on it is worth a zillion dollars...I'm not one of them.

Yeah, but then some people think that anything that got "Glock" stamped on it is inherently reliable...I'm not one of them.

If I was going to spend that much on a used HK pistol, I'd pick up either a Tactical or P7M8 (not that I've ever actually seen a used P7M8 priced that cheap, but I'm sure they're out there...somewhere).

That reputation belongs to SIG Sauer handguns.

The P9S comes chambered in either 9mm or .45. Many people say the .45 P9S is the epitome of the handgun. The P9S uses the same roller locked delayed blowback mechanism as the HK G3 and HK MP5. It is incredibly durable and reliable, and even uses an MP5 barrel blank.

It has the absolutely best trigger in a DA/SA pistol ever. The SA trigger is on par with the 1911, and the DA trigger is about like a S&W revolver, but with a bit more take up.

It has a multi-function lever that decocks, cocks, and releases the slide.

The frame is made from stamped steel, and incorporates a nylon recoil buffer in the front portion of the frame. If you buy one, be advised to inspect the buffer. Replace it if it looks worn... You can get them for about $10.00 + or -.

The gun is extremely easy to disassemble... probably the easiest one I've ever field stripped.

I cannot say enough good things about these guns:

Extremely accurate and reliable
Good ergonomics and aesthetics
Easiest semiauto to disassemble

If I could own only one pistol, it would be a P9S. It is small enough and light enough to carry concealed, and is durable and reliable as hell. Because it uses the same lockup mechanism as the MP5, you can run thousands of rounds through it before it must be cleaned.... again, very reliable and forgiving.

At $900, the gun should be in pretty good shape. Prices on these things vary quite a bit. Generally, they go for $800 - $1,000, but occasionally, you find one for $600 from someone who doesn't realize what they have.

Also, you should know that there are two different versions, combat, with fixed sights, and Target with adjustable sights and adjustable trigger. Honestly, the stock trigger on the combat model is so sweet, that the adjustable trigger is really only for extreme range use. The target models are also found in "Sport Goups," that include target grips, extended barrrels, and sometimes extra slide.

Get it..... You will NOT be disappointed!

I've got the 45 and 9mm P9S and the VP70

First, $900 for one in VERY good condition is a fair price.

Like "fnfalman" said I bought my H&Ks WAY BACK when for $350. I also bought new GI 1911A1 45s for under $20 but those days are gone forever.

The last new price I saw, years ago in Shotgun News was $1,300- $1,500.

The first time I shot a borrowed 9mm I couldn't believe the 25 yard groups.
I told my friend I can't shoot that well, I've got to get one of these.:)

I bought a used 45 from a Houston policeman that had the slide mat chromed.
Later I got a 9mm at a gun show for $350 when the going price was climbing past $450.

My only problem with the P9S is the trigger has a LOT of travel after the sear release.
I made a couple trigger stops for them. Not pretty but works good.

The P9S would be my carry gun except I don't have a holster for it and it is too big, by today's standards.

The VP70 is weird. In original form it is a 3 round burst machine pistol.
It has a 18 round magazine, an 18 pound DAO trigger and strange sights.
It's blow back with a very light weight slide.
The rifling is VERY heavy to ALLOW BLOW BY to reduce the pressure of the 9mm round.

The P9S also comes with the heel release (aka European style) for the magazine. You used to be able to get the Target model with the muzzle compensator.

I missed it because it's a fairly slim gun, at least when compared to the modern guns like Glocks and USPs, SIGPros, etc.

I was an idiot for selling that piece although I never regretted buying the P220 (a superior handgun).

I also flirted with the VP70 as well. It's not only ugly but ungainly and the DAO trigger is horrendous. It was never a popular piece despite the rock bottom prices EVEN after the rise of the Deustchmark against the US dollars that cause a 40% rise in German guns' prices.

But for quite a few people, anything marked "HK" would warrant a massive raise in price.

I would love to re-own the P9S, especially in .45Auto but I personally wouldn't pay $900 for it. But that's just me. The same way I wouldn't pay that much money for a P7, knowing how undesirable they were fourteen years ago and how cheap they were then as well.

Those are some of the damn ugliest guns I've ever seen in my life!

Especially that 70; looks like a hi-point or raven or similar.

But it's a pretty cool machine pistol.

I don't remember the movie but a BG was using one.
A detachable stock/holster gives it it's burst capability.

The trigger pull is so hard it's hard to get through a 18 round mag semi auto.

thanks guys.

im not sure i would put the money down for the vp70z, but if i had the 900 bucks or so.....i'd get the p9s .45 before any tricked out wilson combat or kimber model.......

thanks again for the info.

Here is a cool video of the VP70 in action, 2200 rpm is bad!!http://www.hkpro.com/video/VP70Z-VP70M.mov

And another link for info on all HK firearms

By the way, I carry a P7M8 and I am very happy with it, very safe and accurate pistol.

I have the P9s in 45 as one of my favorite guns of all time. I can remember many years ago when I went in my local shop and seen 3 or 4 of them in the case and NO ONE wanted them, except me. I did manage to get a 9mm versions many years ago, but it is long since traded off. I often nose around to see if I can find one at a reasonable price and the results are almost always NO. People that have them and are selling them play by the rule stated earlier, that any HK stamped gun is worth a fortune. That price is pretty good compared to what I have seen them go for. They are rare to start with and you almost never see them even on the Internet boards let alone a local shop. About the only way I would ever be able to get one is find one that someone is wanting to sell and they don't know what they've got or they are hard up for money. Other than that I don;t ever see me paying the constantly escalating pricess demanded for them. You should think HARD about getting it. If it is in good shape you could always get your money back in a couple of years. If he has any stuff with it like the box, papers extra parts or mags, that just increases the value. The funny thing is that the Blue Book on the things are like $650-$700, good luck ever finding one at that price.
You know there has got to be a bunch of those things floating around Europe somewhere. Probably thousands of them in warehouses sitting in crates. I have even called HK several times and asked them to re-introduce the P9s. They never take the suggestion seriously though. You'd think that with their current lineup of pistols that the P9s would fit right in with them, but we'll never see new ones made again.

I've drooled over several P9S .45s and handled some 9mms. Even got to shoot one .45. Certainly a very interesting pistol and it would sell nowadays too. Accurate, light recoiling, well made. Standard HK product.

Wish they didn't cost so much. The thumb lever was an interesting idea. SA, DA on demand including cocking the hammer.

Are the VP70's legal? - Since the stock is what makes it shoot 3-round-bursts? It would sure be fun to shoot one, let alone own one!

vp70z (Zivilist) is the Civilian version of the vp70 and does not have the interconnect for the gunstock. It is not capable of burst fire. It is as legal as any standard semi-automatic pistol.

i got my P7M8 for $300 and a USP .40 Compact which I had $500 into. The P7 was like new in the box. The deals are out there, you just have to look for em. I've seen P9S's at the guns shows for over 1200.
