Do you belive that night sights on a G19 are a necessity for CCW? Is the normal parking lot over head lighting sufficient or is it worth investing in Night Sights?

I like them, it is easier when light is dim, and I find it easier even when light is good.

So to answer your question, probably yes.

Go with the Truglos tritium fiber optis, best of both worlds.

I prefer a front tritium only. I'm currently using a non tritium Heine SlantPro rear with a tritium Heine front. I find the 3 dot system to cluttered for my eyes. I wish I could find a Heine rear with a tritium bar. I guess I could send a plain Heine rear out to have a bar insert installed. ;g

I find Meprolight 3-dot night sights to be excellent, and most of my Glocks (including my G19) wear them.

Black-on-black sights are VERY hard to see, for me at least, even when it isn't all that dark. The white-outlined dots make it easy to align sights in low-contrast situations where it isn't quite dark enough to pick up the tritium glow, but the sight "edges" (for a conventional sight picture) aren't that visible. If it is darker, the three glowing dots are easy to see and align, while black-on-black sights will be practically invisible.

When there is plenty of light, I use the "edges" (conventional sight picture) on the Meps, and hardly notice the white dots. They work well in all conditions, so far as I'm concerned. There are other brands (Trijicons, etc.) that are quite similar, and may work just as well.

I highly recommend night sights on any pistol that may be used defensively.

I couldn't have said it any better. I like Mepro's because of the substantial white outline around the Tritium insert(Trijicons don't have as big of white outline). Easy to pick up during the day, and the Tritium is easier to pick up during low light. I have been carrying Mepro's on Duty for years. They have never failed me. On the Other hand, I would like to check some Truglos if they have a white outline. Not sure if they do. Any comments?

When I first started carrying my Glock, I didn't see the need for spending the extra money for night sights. However, after I broke down and installed them on my G26, I realized the error of that thinking for a defensive weapon... I now have them on all my carry weapons and recommend them to anyone who asks ... The difference in ability to aquire a sight picture in low light conditions will be quite obvious.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,

Just a quick note, for what it's worth. I am a federal LEO, and also one of the firearms instructors for my department. We adopted the GLOCK almost a decade ago (if my mind is not TOO fried), and issue them with night sights. The transition from our older semi was pretty flawless, and the GLOCKs are popular, even with the SIG devotees. We have about 500 folks that come out to the range, which we run every week (not ALL 500 people shoot every week, but the range is available either to qualify or just familiarize themselves with their weapons). During low light shooting which we hold frequently, the sights REALLY prove their worth. I am one of the cheapest guys in the world, and yet on the (personal) GLOCK I just bought I have MEPROs included. The gun lasts (basically) forever, the extra pennies I spent on the MEPROs will pay for themselves if (when?) the "ship hits the sand."

PS - I like the MEPROs because (as pointed out by someone else) the outline around the embedded capsules is larger, and easier to pick up. Regards to all, good shooting.

I just bought some Mep nitesites for my 19,the best part about them is when I put my pistol on my night stand at night,it's easy to find in the middle of the night if needed.

First the FBI says most encounters happen in low light and I'll add my vote for Meprolight that I have on a few of my Glocks.

Ditto on the Meps. One of the best buys I've had for my 19. The outlines do not fade when they come in contact with cleaning solvents. You can even try mixing the colors for your sights (ex: green front, orange rear)

Good luck with your choice.

Good point about using the night sights to locate it, I find them extremely helpful in quickly locating my G19 on my nightstand as well.

I put Meprolight night sights on all of my Glocks. They make it very easy, fast to aquire and properly line up your sights in a low-light situation. As an added bonus they make it easy to see your guns orientation in total darkness, for times when things go "bump" in the night.

Installing a set of night sights are a good under $100.00 investment.

Who's to say that the parking lot light will be on when you need to draw your G19? Perhaps the bulb is blown, or was broken by the Bad Guy so that he could have an advantage. Or maybe the ballast will overheat, and the light will go out for a few critical seconds and then come on again once the ballast cools down?

Which night sights you buy is really up to your individual preference- Sight picture, brightness, etc.. You can't go wrong with a set of Mepros, Trijicons, Heines, 24/7 Express sights, or Novaks.

I agree with everyone that they are well worth the money. Your options are almost endless.

I will make one suggestion though. Since my laser surgery, my eyes fight for dominance much more than they used too. At night, three dots can rapidly become a confusing mishmash of six unless I momentarily squint--not close--my non-dominant right eye. A vertical bar rear would be much better for me.

You may want to consider eye dominance color vision and whatnot when you purchase your sights.

I tried to find Trijicons in my area but no one had them.
I settled on Meprolights and I absolutely hate them.
The big white outlined dots are very distracting to me.
with the Trijicons, you can remove the white outline easily which is a plus in my situation.
If anyone wants to buy mine, make me an offer.
they are for a Glock,17,22,31,19,23,32 and are less than a week old and gun never fired or cleaned.
I bought them brand new on 9-14-04.

I had always used Trijicons for this reason but I think I will try the Heinies this time, maybe with a tritium front only. These look like they would give me the picture I want, save for Bo-mars.
(I only use the glowing properties to find my gun in the dark)

Guys,

I've got mostly Meprolights, but I recently got the Operator night sights for my G-36 and they are much better. The rear sight is much wider with no white circles around the tritium vials and the front sight is really thin with a nice white outline around the tritium vials. It's the best I've seen! In my opinion you just don't see enough between the Mepros.

My three defensive Glocks (a G19, G21 and a G26) all wear Meprolight sights. They are the one and only modification I make to my CCW pistols.

No pistol intended for self defense should be without them. Considering that the largest percentage of defensive encounters happen in low light, it's an advantage I want to have.
