First, I'm NOT trying to start yet another banter about gun oil vs. motor oil vs. cooking lard vs. candle wax. I think, I hope that fellow has gotten tired of that by now. This is just an observation and something that's worked well for me.
The ONLY thing I don't love about my Glock is the slide's finish. I don't like the rough texture as it attracts dust, lint, you name it. I use FP-10 as a lubricant and have found that a few light coatings of that makes the slide feel very slick and the boundary film it creates fills in the porosity a bit. Darkens the color slightly, but that's okay with me. WONDERFUL for corrosion protection too. As for a lubricant haven't found anything to match, not Militec nor Tetra, but that's my personal observations.
Just thought I'd throw that out as something which may be of benefit, especially to those of us that carry on-duty.

I'm guessing that your G19 has the older matte black finish, rather than the slightly glossy and smooth finish on newer Glocks, right?

I have a couple of Glocks with the older finish. I usually rub a little Tetra on their slides to make 'em look a bit better. If I come on any FP-10, I'll give it a try.

With the newer finish, I just wipe them down with a paper towel; there is no need for any type of oil to improve the finish and the tenifer-treated slide underneath the finish is not going to rust anyway regardless of which surface finish one has.

Can't go wrong with a silicone gun cloth...does wonders for my glock slide. I just do a wipe down and be done with it. Put fingerprints on it and it miraculously goes away.

Oh and all new glocks (re: Gxx series) don't have smooth finishes. They have the pebbly, speckled finish.

Gman, I consider the new finish "smooth" in contrast with the old matte finish, not smooth in absolute terms. Then again, maybe my speckles and pebbles are smaller than your speckles and pebbles! :)

No prob, the new slide finish matches the frame (save for the grip panels).

If you ever get a chance to fondle a G37, you'll know what I mean.

What do you all think would be the smoothest finish for my old G19 in keeping with the black appearance? It's soon to go back in my duty holster and be subject to wear/tear again, so durablilty is a key issue of course.
Is the Glock refinishing a major improvement what these old ones?

My guess is that the new pebbly finish was done to enhance the grippyness unlike the slippery, teflon-like finish found on the Cxx?, Dxx, Exx and most Fxx series Glocks.

All boils down to personal preference.

There are a few places that refinish Glock slides, and IIRC, Glock used to.

A Glock "factory" refinish would be inexpensive, as I recall, but I don't know whether they would give you the old or the new version. (I think, but don't know for sure, that the new finish is some type of polymer-based coating. Polymer? On a pistol? What next, polymer frames?). There are several places offering various kinds of slide refinishing, including (ugh!) chrome.

Even if the black stuff wears off, your pistol is STILL protected by the tenifer treatment given to the slide (and barrel) before the (old or new) external finish was applied, so it is mostly a question of appearance.

I think the new finish will be less prone to simple wear (from a holster, for example) than the old.

Aha! So maybe there is a THIRD Glock finish! The finish I called "smooth" is the one on my "F" and "G" series pistols (plus a late "E" series G30), in contrast to the matte black (maganese oxide looking, similar to the appearance of an AR-15 receiver) finish on my "E" series G21.

This could be more serious than Last Round Nosedives! We have to get to the bottom of this, gman. ;)

Glockmeister will refinish a slide for $49, but it takes about three weeks.
