I guess it is possible that the 10-Ringers could, if the stars were properly aligned, all simultaneously be "sleeping it off." In a sense it would result in the hypothetical sober 10-Ring quorum about which you prognosticated.

A postscript to the Peyton Manning story I posted on the last page:

24 hours after the initial story hit the press, Peyton said he was making a joke about tanking the baseline concussion mental testing. Whether he was truly sincere about this "admission" I leave to the judgement of the public.

Several advisors to U.S. presidents tell variations of this one-liner: Even when a President cracks a joke, he is still saying SOMETHING!

I apologize for violating decorum with the back-to-bac post. However, i find myself in a bit of a quandary that may be best presented to a group of experts...

Topic: The appropriate beer for the season...

Nearly May. Trees are full o' bloom. Usually that implies a nice Spring seasonal ale. However it has been snowing today and accordingly my biorhyhms are a little out of whack. Is it bad form to go with a Winter ale at this point? Probably not too fresh and everyone knows that it is unfashionable to drink Jubleale after St. Patrick's day.

That quandry can be easily solved.

Drinking Crown Royal is appropriate at any time, and should be practiced on a regular basis.

The full services of the Dungeon Doubletalk Detachment are placed at your disposal.

Figure it this way:
1) What beer do you WANT to drink right now?
2) The Dungeon apparatus will provide a suitable justification for that particular beer. (Hey, service like this is what we draw our 39% cut of the take for!)

Unkle, we went with a longshot on the product placement, and we hit the jackpot! Kate, Pippa, AND their dresses were all rated as 10's by most of that 2 billion people tuning in. So we hit the perfecta of the billion salacious guys (pardon my redundancy) that had the hots for Pippa (and Kate by association, even though Pippa was in the sleek show-little-but-imply-much costume, which makes Kate look hot as part of the presentation while still filling the demure proper role in the proceedings), AND the female billion who appreciate the twosome's fashion judgement. Two billion minds thinking about "10"! The Dungeon Marketing types are proud of this one!

The Brits run a public spectacle with more class, flair, style, and punctuality than anyone else in the world! It was worth watching, even without factoring in the salacious sleazeball observational opportunities. Seeing an event run with class is always enjoyable even if the participants in that event are of minimal interest to the observer.

I have an additional observation to offer. I watch a replay of the Spanish-language coverage. I speak no Spanish, but it was amazing how much NOT understanding the commentary seemed to enhance the viewing experience!

I offer MY television scheduling conspiracy to complement YOUR television scheduling conspiracy:

For many years, ABC ran the movie "Ten Commandments" on Easter Sunday evening. This year, they ran it on SATURDAY evening! Why, you may ask? I offer this answer: This year, ABC has a top hit in "Desperate Housewives" on Sunday night, and they didn't want to zap the ratings buildup for the season's last three episodes!

The 85 Mustang. The first Mustang with a roller cam and the last Mustang with no computer controls is a hot rodders dream. I have one in my garage, which, with the addition of some pocket ported World Products heads, Crane cam, Edelbrock manifold, 3.27 gears and a few other tricks is very respectable even in an LS dominted world. 24 mpg out of a stock V8 which can go 140 MPH is still respectable.
As for bell bottoms and polyster, if you were hip, you laughed at that stuff the same way that todays hip people laugh at pants with the crotch at the knees.
No, today or yesterday, being hip is still a very individual thing. The polyester, bell bottom crowd was just following the herd.
In the 80s, I bicycled 200 miles a week and refused to go anywhere that the lombada was danced. Today, I own a time machine.

You're right about that Mod. 57 (41 mag) Uncle...but never the less it was the "Dirty Harry" movie that spawned my yerning for the S&W Mod 29...the trigger on mine is very sweet. The Mod 19 6" 357 Combat Magnum's trigger is slightly better than the 29's. Both have provided great service over the years and they are each complimented by a Marlin 1894 44Mag & 357Mag lever rifle.

Sorry about your SuperBlackhawk...The first 50 loads I put thru my S&W 29 were full loads of IMR4227 in used casings...split them all! My bad! But the steel chicken hanging on the chains would wrap up on the pipe support...Started using Blue Dot after that and got great accuracy using less powder!

But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

I can add to this "masquerade" syndrome. I own a Smith model 28, the same frame as the 29, but in .357mag. Students get a kick out of handling a "Dirty Harry"-sized revolver, even if it is a different caliber.

I'm north of the River, they are opening the Bonnet Carré Spillway in an efford to lower the river levels both above and below...they are considering opening the Atchafalaya Spillway further up river also to ease the pressures on the levy systems an make shipping less hazardous. More latter!

Shadow, have you heard anything about possibilities of the authorities deciding to open the Morganza Floodway further down on the Atchafalaya? If I recall correctly, the Morganza has been open only once before since it was built.

_The_Shadow
05-10-2011, 13:25
The Morganza Spillway are the gates that spills into the Atchafalaya Spillway they need to evacuate some people and livestock from in that basin before they open it...I think they opened it in 1973-4 last time.

I use to hunt near the Marganza spillway along the Mississippi river on a friend of mine's private land...big deer running along the river, of course the high river levels will force the deer to move to higher ground or head for the farm lands and woods protected by the levys.

_The_Shadow
05-10-2011, 13:40
Actually the river has funneled so much water and sediment offshore that none is being deposited in the marshes as it would with the opening of the spillways. People having to move out of the spillway is a problem but the havoc possed on the fishing industry with the influx of fresh water and silt will desimated the oysters, speckle trout and red fish for quite a while. Some of this is being blown out of proportion but most is true...:crying:

However should the levys break or be broken by shipping traffic the consequences will be even more devastating than what happens to the fishing industry...

Thanks for the concerns guys, I should be OK on my end...I'm north of New Orleans.
There are about 2000+ people that actually live inside the Atchafalaya within the flood plane they have been warned of the opening which may happen saturday. They know of the situation and are working to move out of harms way.

The biggest fear is that breakaway barges or a ship loosing control and with the river current running at 5 to 6 knots could damage levys...it is not uncommon along the river levys to look over someone's house and see ships floating by high above the level of the house's roof.

As f this evening Mississippi river is at 17+ feet above sea level...even with the Bonnet Carré Spillway part way open. The levys protect New Orleans to 20'.

Most of the City of New Orleans and surrounding towns are below or at sea level so you can see where a levy breech would have a sever impact! Especially in heavily populated areas.

1.3 million cubic feet per second of water is flowing past Baton Rouge and 1.2 million cubic feet per second past New Orleans.

Have they imposed any restrictions on shipping speed or density on the river?

_The_Shadow
05-11-2011, 10:57
Yes! they are monitoring vessel traffic very closely and use of river pilots aboard, also they have a "no work" restriction on or around the levy systems hopefully to prevent damage.

It's amazing just how much snow melt and rain there was in the north, the flooding up there was disasterous to say the least.

VN350X10

Yeah, us "Damn Yankees" did get a bit of snow this year. Fargo N.D. had something like 40.6' of snow total, they average around 26'. And the upper Mid-West was very similar for all the other states. N.D. just stuck in my mind because they had the most.

Shadow, eighty years ago, the threat of levee sabotage against the "opposite bank" levees was an enormous concern. Has that issue faded?

_The_Shadow
05-11-2011, 21:19
Samurai Rabbi, be it levee sabotage like years past or terrorist that threat is very real today...we know some idiots have the ultimate solutions to everything!

The levees as they stand today along the river have sheet pile walls driven deep past the base, which makes them really strong. But at the curret water levels of 17+ feet and crest near 19'+ or 20' the levees are designed for 20'+ feet a ship or group of barges could slide up near the top and start the damage which could result in the errosion failure of a large section.

The people in the wake of the Marganza/Atchafalaya Basins know that this could and would eventually happen...

They think that the Marganza spillway will eventually be siphoning 600K cubic feet per second from the river as they open more bays. Yes to relieve pressure on the levees, and hopefully maintain safer river vessel traffic. They had 25 barges break loose today in Baton Rouge and actually strike the Hwy 190 Mississippi river bridge, they were quickly rounded up, thank goodness. With it open it should stabilize the water level (I think was 43.2') and the 1.5 Million cubic foot per second flow at Baton Rouge. The river is forecast to crest there at 47.5 feet on May 22. EXXON refinery has slowed it production down by 9.9% this doesn't help fuel prices either. Crops being damaged thru out the river valley north to south will impact food prices too!

Since the Bonnet Carre spillway was opened it has stabilized the water level to about 16.7' and 1.2 million cubic foot per second flow.

This will be a long term event in the spillways and based on river levels dropping to close the gates and then having the land drain off over time!

Opening the spillway slowly helps to get animal life moving out of the affected areas, rabbits were runnin' deer were runnin' and people will be runnin' too!

38 years since the Morganza floodway was last used; that is plenty of time for people to get comfortable and forget how powerful nature can be.

The animals bailing out of the area must have been a sight! Perhaps the animals are wiser than some people.

Well just got out of the tub, Today was blessed with beautiful sunshine and cool breezes. Tooks advantage of the situation and stripped the shingles off my 24'x30' shop roof, I was suppose to do this ever since Hurricane Katrina messed up the edges.

Got all the shingles off the worst side, in the morning I'll be taking the old tar paper off, inspecting for loose nails or needed repairs, then re-tarpapering and new drip edge and starter strips & new shingles. Then jumping to the other side, thinking of adding on about 10' to the other side, place to put the boat and lawn and garden equipment.

Using the old shingles to prepare a new place to park the travel trailer.

End of the world? How about a party instead?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110518/ap_on_re_us/us_apocalypse_saturday

The prediction originates with Harold Camping, an 89-year-old retired civil engineer from Oakland, Calif., who founded Family Radio Worldwide, an independent ministry that has broadcast his prediction around the world.
The Rapture — the belief that Christ will bring the faithful into paradise prior to a period of tribulation on earth that precedes the end of time — is a relatively new notion compared to Christianity itself, and most Christians don't believe in it. And even believers rarely attempt to set a date for the event.

I read the article and apparently, there is much room for interpretation on the rapture thing. For example, people expecting to be taken away during the rapture are taking out insurance policies to guarantee that their pets (which will be left behind) will be taken care of. A) The fact that your pet is left behind implies that the earth is not destroyed. B) the fact that people will be around to take care of your pet implies that (at least) some people will survive.

Frankly, I'm confused. I should have picked up a six pack of Guinness at the supermarket today. Having a good buzz on seems like it would help with the ambiguity of not being swept away.

One of the five ways that people are trying to profit from this conjecture is by hosting commercial end of the world parties.

The PRE-end-of-world parties can be lucrative, but the REALLY big bucks come AFTER Saturday has past. When the world does NOT end on Saturday, there will be an enormous market for Disappointment Resolution Symposiums for the believers who have to reconcile themselves to the world NOT ending! The Dungeon planning types think THIS source of revenue will be so massive that we will have to actually REDUCE our embezzlement rate to about 38.3%, simply to relieve the stress on the Dungeon Embezzlement Counting Teams.

I would think that plastic surgeons would do quite well with the post apocolypse cognitive dissonance folks. I can imagine that after publicly swearing that they are certain of the earth's demise, that it would be easier to change their identity rather than admit that they were "awaiting the rapture." It's sort of like taking an Obama bumper sticker off of your Prius. If you stuck the bumper sticker on the cars plastic fascia and then find that it won't come off, it may just be easier to sell the car (and buy a Ford Focus which gets the same gas mileage).

It's time to plug in this song and party.

R.E.M.
It's The End Of The World Lyrics

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes,
an aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn,
world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs.
Feed it off an aux speak,, grunt, no, strength,
The ladder starts to clatter with fear fight down height.
Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site.
Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck.
Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing!
Fine, then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.
Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right - right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers.
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn.
Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting.
Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed. Uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier.
Renegade steer clear! A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies.
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.
(I feel fine)

It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line
Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev. Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.

It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)

Even if CTM does not make it back in time, the 10-Ring has ample bench depth to carry the load.

The Dungeon Navigation Service has everything in place, in case the magnetic reversal DOES occur. Even if it does happen, it will be manageable.

Yo, MD! You clearly have not yet reached the ultimate nirvana that represents the pinnacle achievement of the 10-Ring outlook on existence! Do not worry; da' Rabbi will explain this correctable defect in your outlook.

You are confusing inspiring and uninspiring; this confusion is a standard condition that is well-known to those who carry the admin load of keeping the 10-Ring Resort functioning. The inspiring achievement of keeping a thread running for 500 pages is, in an oddly contraindicative way, so much within the capabilities we cherish as 10-Ring denizens, that we prefer to regard it as UN-inspiring, since it what we have been striving to achieve for all these years. So our inspired action is actually uninspiring, since we would be disappointed in ourselves if it WERE inspiring!

My advice: Grab the beer, sit back, and enjoy the ride. The Dungeon Admin Types advise against overthinking things.
