View Full Version : Anyone Tried Laser Sights?
HI,
We've talked about "night sights", does anyone have any experience with the laser type sights (ie: LaserMax) that install in the recoil spring. These are allegedly "easily" installed and work in all degrees of background light. How is their point of aim in relation to the beam? Do you suppose that they are worth the approximately $300 they charge?

Not to me.
I'd rather have a set of night sights and a good flashlight.

i just read that on CNN, crazy, over a half ton, thats like how much a mini cooper weighs.
;P ;P ;P ;P
I wondered how long it would take someone to recognize him.
I just changed it about half an hour ago.
All those folks that are against FMJ better hope they never get attacked by someone like him.
If he tried to attack all you would have to do is walk away, he would never catch up.

I have LaserMax in my 19/26...picked 'em up for $175 each at a going outa business sale...LaserMax in the 26 has been worthless (does not stay on) better results in the 19 but not worth $300...I prefer the rail mount M6 :)

I find it interesting that you would ask such a question considering your experience.
G,
I never pretend to know everything, I'll leave that to you and your minions. Do you have something constructive to add? For example, do you have an opinion about laser sights on the GLOCK?
Be forewarned G, I may not agree with your opinion, if you can take the "heat" without folding, then respond on those terms. Let's talk. Pako.

It was front page on the 11th.
I have a Lasermax in my G19. Change the takedown bar and it just drops in. There is no adjustment, put it in and there's your dot. Maybe yours is little off at a distance, mine is slightly low and left of POI, I adjust as needed. It seems to RTZ fairly well (not noticably different up to 30 feet anyway.)
Functionally it is a good product, a nice bright (constant in mine, they now flash) dot, good on cloudy days up to 25-30 yards...not visible in direct sun though unless you are ~15 feet from the target. Good battery life, I've used mine about 40 hours and never (except for below) changed them.
The customer service was fantastic, I had a bad switch and it ran the batteries out while I was on vacation. They took 100% care of me.
I've heard internet horror stories about them coming apart when firing which jams the pistol good...hasn't happened to me and I've got about 300 rounds with it installed, some of the PD guys have thousands of rounds with theirs.
FITS IN ANY OF YOUR HOLSTERS!
I use it for training mostly, good to see how your trigger pull affects the pistol, especially at long distances (~50 yards at dusk, or low lighted range.) Haven't had to paint a BG with it yet so no idea what it would do for me there.
Look around, I got mine NIB for under $250...seen them online at just over $200.

Mine works really well in my G19, very close to POA at 30 ft. Easy installation. Off about an inch or so. After 50 years of shooting I can't get a good sight picture without glasses. Unfortunately, the BG won't wait for me to find them, so the LaserMax is a great alternative. Maybe someone will design open sights that are like those big button telephones. Sights bigger than the pistol. Ha!
The thing to look out for is the batteries. You should use the LaserMax prepared battery pack of three batteries that have been fused together. I bought some single batteries and installed them individually and they really get slammed against each other. They haven't failed, but I don't trust 'em.

Too rich for my blood. I saw them on a G26 and they worked great, when I asked the price and was told, I politely said no thank you.
What does anyone know about the Crimson Trace system? http://www.crimsontrace.com/ This looks like a viable alternative, but it may tie up your accessory rail (if you have one).
I remember a dealer at a gun show earlier this year who had the Lasermax system, *and* a Crimson Trace-"like" system both installed on his G27 (for comparative purposes). At the time I didn't ask what the non-lasermax system was, but I remember that the non-lasermax laser was much brighter, a constant beam, and was visible across the whole convention center, the Lasermax wasn't as great compared to this one.
Does this ring a bell with anyone, and are there other reliable internal lasers besides Lasermax and Crimson Trace?
thanks,
-mik
I've had L-max in my G19 for 2 years and hundeds of rounds with absolutely no problems. My eyes are also less than perfect so it is an excellent alternative - NOT A REPLACEMENT - for irons.
The CT sights are nice and cheaper but for Glocks they have to be installed by CT since Glocks don't have replacable grips. They modify the pistol to accept the sight which didn't appeal to me. I would install them on any other brand pistol without a concern.

When the SHTF you will, if properly trained and prepared, have the time to focus on one thing prior to pressing the trigger, your front sight.

Got LaserMax in all three of my GLOCKS. No problems of any sort. It's the second option on all my guns, right after I put AGrips on them.
Lasers can be useful in many scenarios but they are indeed worthless in the daylight.;j

Tom Gresham used to think that laser sights were gimmicks, but he's changing his opinion, it seems.
You can check out a recent conversation he had with a guy from Crimson Trace on the Gun Talk show of September 19th.
Got to http://www.guntalk.com, then click on archives and then September 19th show for the stream.

I love Crimson Trace. But I also had a LaserMax on a G-26 that I've since traded. Crimson Trace in my opinion is a much more practical laser - much more visible, but still not for bright daylight.
I haven't read any report of a CT battery wearing out yet, but CT website reports that the laser dims considerably before going out, so there is small chance you wouldn't notice that the battery was about to fail.

Bubbygator, I think the problem with making a laser bright enough to be seen in daylight or sun light is that it might produce enough power to drill a hole through your target. If that's the case, all you'll need is the laser! Any physicists out there with an opinion on this?

It would save on ammo - but, it'd probably make up in battery costs. Might even need a "Die Hard" ... ;e
