I have been using a Cushcraft 5/8w magmount mounted on top of the PU since the 80s but it's a little "long in the tooth" now. Today I ordered a Diamond M285 5/8w MM to replace it with from AES. I do 100% 2M simplex operation using an Icom V8000 at 75W. The antenna is very important to me.What does everyone use?

I've always liked Diamonds stuff. I use them for my hand held and mobile.

Mostly Diamonds and Comets.

Comet works real close with the motorcyclists ( MARC ) in southern CA
They have tested many ants. and have a few favorites for motorcycles.

I have always used a simple 19-inch quarter wave. I usually make them myself. Why? They are very inconspicuous, and the broad-as-a-barn pattern seems to work well with the repeaters and be little affected by city congestion.

Not only that, but the 2-meter quarter wave works as a 3/4 wave on 70 cm, so I have a dual band antenna for the price of a single, simple whip.

I use the 285 Diamond with a V8000 also in a semi truck. Have had no problems with it and it takes the abuse alot better than my last set up.

This is what I use.

The Metropolitan is a Tri-band VHF mobile adaptation of the Suburban antenna that covers 144, 220 and 440 MHz with great performance on all three bands. The antenna operates as a quarter wave radiator on each band and as such, requires a ground plane for proper operation. No tuning is required, as the antenna simply screws onto a low profile (Motorola/NMO style) mount. Only 19 inches tall, the Metropolitan can be used with the Austin Triplexer for simultaneous three band operation with separate radios!
