Hello one and all. . .

Picked up a Polish 64 semi-auto pistol a short time ago and need some information please.

Pistol is in 9 Mak caliber, and overall appears to be in almost excellent condition (a few slight marks in the grips -- metal is perfect) Dated on the slide "1975" and a circle with the number "11" inside. Overall quality appears to be very good. Came with only one mag.

Not really sure why I bought it, other than the price ($125) and to add it to my small collection of other pocket autos (EG Mak-- converted to 380 acp, four Walthers, and a CZ 50 and a couple of 22's).

Does anyone have one of these little pistols ? ? What about ammo --any steel case or brass case ammo work ? ? Ball or HP's ? ? What about recoil -- never had a pistol in 9 Mak caliber before ?

Double action triger pull is HEAVY, but single action pull is not too bad. Read that at times the safety will "drop down" when firing, but the safety on this one is pretty "stiff".

Any information / replies / opinions greatly appreciated !

Thanks ! ! !

The price is good.
I'd buy one in a minute for $125 (and I've already got three:))

It shoots any and all 9x18.
(Russian Silver Bear 120 grain JHP jams in it but that ammo jams in most everything)

Kicks pretty hard, no very hard.

Some have had trouble with the thumb safety but if yours operates properly, works fairly smooth, snaps off and on and drops the hammer yours is probably OK.
There's a spring and plunger to lock the safety in place.
I suspect this is the problem with the ones that have had trouble.
It should be a 10 minute fix.

It's very reliable and accurate. It should group under 10-11 inches at 50 yards. Pretty good for such a small gun.

As you have seen the DA trigger pull stinks.
Personally it's not a problem for me since I hardly ever shoot DA with anything.

Makarov holsters, like the Don Hume holster works for the P-64.

Some shooters don't like the small sights. I like them for target shooting.
They hit off a little but that's pretty normal with fixed sights.

I like the small gun and the 9x18 round and have no problem counting on it as a small carry gun. (but I'd rather have my 45)

I cut down the (real) Makarov 21 pound spring for the P-64 to tame the recoil a little. Doesn't help much.

The teenage son of a friend says it doesn't kick and another fellow that shot it says it doesn't kick so, it's just an individual thing.

M2 Carbine,

Is there anything that can be done to increase the SA trigger pull (make it heavier not lighter)? I have had two of these and sent both back to SOG because of the safety problem. I am considering another one because I like the size and I like how it shot, recoil was somewhat stiff, but not bad. I have read about alot of problems with certain years of manufacture, specifically 1969 and 1976. The people who have 1974 have seem to have reported the least amount of problems.

I have a '69 and '71. The '69 was completely flawless and unissued...the '71 had thin bluing on the underside of the trigger guard. I got two because I wanted a sure source of spare parts.

This is an absolutely wonderful pocket gun! Mind you, it kicks like a Missouri mule and the double-action trigger pull is horrendous, but I love mine. I can draw and cock it with no trouble, so the double action pull is not a drawback for me. Plus, I'm finding that the more I shoot it, the more reasonable the double action pull is becoming.

Now then, go to the drug store and get one bottle each of generic ibuprofin and acetomenaphin (Advil and Tylenol). Before practice, take one of each. Trust me on this. My doctorate isn't in medicine, but my wife is a surgical nurse and one of the surgeons came up with this for pain relief, and it works!

And, yes, you will need it.

Mark,
I would think the SA trigger pull could be made heavier. I never thought about it but I just checked mine and they are light for a military pistol. But I like it.:)

No, I don't know how to work on the action.
I'd learn if I had to but hopefully I won't have to.

Mine are 1972, 73 and 74.
The 74 had the hardest DA trigger and safety but it's getting better.

I think before I bought another one I'd want to handle it and operate the safety, etc first.

There's a local store that sells P-64's at the Dallas show that has a whole crate of them and you can take your pick, but they are a little high at $179.
With the past reported problems about the quality control, that seems like the way to buy one.

I've been lucky that the 2 I ordered were 1st rate.
The 74 I bought at the gunshow.

Good luck if you order another one.

Billy, You might try SOG.
They were holding back the second magazine when others were giving 2 mags with the gun.
I figured they were skimming off the second mag to sell it separately.

Billy,

M2 Carbine is right. SOG does have extra mags, usually go for $12.95 and during the month of August they are on sale for $9.50.

Thanks again to one and all . . .

Contacted SOG via e-mail and they do have the mags in stock -- $9.50 each, plus shipping.

Just placed an order for two mags . . . never know if I might end up with another P-64 ! !

Thanks again ! !

Hello again . . .

Well . . . received my two mags from SOG (total of $27 for the two mags, sales tax and shipping) and took her to the range today.

Had along 60 rounds of Barnual 9mmMak FMC ammo and a total of three mags.

Can sum up the shooting in one word -- SNAPPY ! ! Man-o-man ! ! Slide cycles FAST ! ! A little more recoil than my little PPK/S too but not really too bad. Was hitting "head sized" rocks at about 40 yards. Pistol had zero problems in the 60 rounds.

13 year old son was along (as always) and wanted to try it out too. I had fired about 20 rounds and he finished off the remaining 40 rounds or so. When finish I ask " so -- what do you think ?" Sons' reply "got any more ammo ? ? ?" I'm sure this little pistol will be making several trips to the range in the future.

Since now I will be "stocking" 9Mak ammo guess I had better start looking for a Bulgy Mak too. Does anyone have both a Polish P-64 and a Bulgy (or other) Mak ? ? Recoil the same ? ?

Thanks to one and all for the great info on this great little pistol.

The recoil in the mak is less than the p-64. Your description of the p-64 recoil as "snappy" is accurate, but is still very manageable to me. A Pearce grip on the mak reduces recoil even more. I do not believe there is any type of rubber grip for the p-64, not sure if any PPK type grip would work.

Dan's Sporting Goods usually has the best price on bulk mak ammo.

I found this thread b/c I was checking out this sale at aimsurplus.com.

Seems like a good deal.

Billy,

How was the trigger pull on the double and single action?

I recently bought one for about the same price. Thought I was getting a MAK. Oh well. Yes it does kick, a lot. Might try the rubber grip sleeve, but I doubt it will do much better.
M2 Carbine is correct in his impressions of this gun. I also bought a case of ammo and think I will be a long time using it up!

Hello Mark . .

Double action pull is HEAVY ! ! I would say 20 pound pull ! !

Single action is sweet ! ! ! "Take up" is nice and smooth and then BANG! ! ! I would say 3-4 pounds, max.

Nice little pistol, but "snappy" . . . .
