Took my daughter shooting for the first time Saturday and after we finished I asked one of the guys if they ever get Makarovs in on trade. He said one came in the day before. It was a Bulgarian Mak for $189 which included a second magazine and gorgeous military leather holster. I fell in love with its look and feel and was debating whether or not to buy it.

My daughter said, "You know you're going to buy it, so buy it." I couldn't argue with logic like that so I did. There seemed to be a fair amount of yellow-brown grease I've cleaned but it's looking good. The serial # code from the link from another Mak thread indicates it was made in 1979 but it doesn't look worn.

I asked the guy at the dealer what he knew about Maks and said not much but what he had heard was:
*some people think they're ugly (I don't agree)
*they're supposed to be very accruate
*they're durable and last forever

Haven't had the chance to shoot it yet but I think I'm going to like my Mak.

It's the AK of pistols. You'll like it for sure. What is the link to the date of manufacture lookup?

Congrats on your Mak. To remove all the cosmoline you should remove the grips, disassemble, remove the firing pin and safety and leave it for a few hours in mineral spirts. Lube and assemble and you're good to go. Don't forget to keep the firing pin channel and firing pin dry and free of lube.

It's killing me. I've had my Mak for nearly two weeks and have yet to shoot it. I went to a gun show over the weekend and bought an owner's manual (translated from the original Russian manual), two spare magazines ($10 each!) and two boxes of FMJ ammo ($7 each).

Gotta make some range time.
