Its a stormy day and the streets are flooded. I'm stuck here inside the house with a lot of computer time on my hands.

Aside from our passion with firearms, what other things are you guys and gals into? Past times, Collections, Hobbies, Sports?

I used to play badminton in our varsity in my sophie and junior years but I stopped playing kasi kulang sa support ng school ang mga varsity teams. My hobbies/sports are running, scuba diving and wall climbing but im kind of inactive sa latter two dahil busy sa school work (concentrate muna sa studies, graduating na ksi ako eh. ;) ), but when the activities have settled down, I'll be going back to the other two. :) As of now, running lang ang activity ko. ;c ;c

I'm into Tennis. I try to play as much as I can when my schedule allows it.

Another hobby, which I am neglecting a lot these past months, is my Bonsai Collection. Most of my collection are extra large bonsai. They're sturdier and resistant to droughts. A lot of the plants need wiring and pruning. I'll just let them grow some more before trimming and re-shaping.

That's a misconception that bonsai is expensive. On the contrary, most bonsai material you can get from as low as P50 to around P2500 for the big trunks. Average price is 250-350 pesos for medium sized trunks. Oras talaga ang puhunan. If you buy it already shaped like what I have, it'll cost in the tens of thousands already. A lot of landscape architects and interior design people get finished works for their clients. So it can also be a very profitable hobby. It's very satisfying to see a seemingly ordinary piece of wood become a work of art.

I used to play both billiard and badminton. Although billiard is my favourite among the two. So far I already got two trophies in billiard, one 3rd place (AMF Coastal Mall) and a 2nd place (AMF Makati Cinema Square) Actually am a regular member of easypooltutor philippines and we are internet based like BOGS. You can drop by at this site: easypooltutor.com Every 3rd Sunday of the month may regular tournament kami at isa sa mga locations ang Coastal Mall at MCS, pag sa bandang north sa Playdium kami.

My handle there is jun. Medyo nakatsamba ako as number 2 player last year. Di na nga ako masyadong active this year kasi busy sa trabaho then pag Sunday family day naman.

aside from occasional shooting.. i try to read the current best seller when i have time and if it catches my interest.. usually first 2 chapters can make or break a book for me.. but the fave authors never let me down.. Clancy, Crichton, Rice, King, Asimov, Rowling "kaso mala movie na yung last book", and recently Brown.. I have read couple of Grishams "too predictable for me", Sheldon, Steele, Cussler, and Sparks also.. not bad, but would always want a Clancy or Crichton plot all the time..

plus yung favorite past time namin ni team mate Dino ;c ;c ;Y ;Y

I'm the type that can't stand not having hobbies

I used to do rock climbing, mountain biking and scuba diving. Oh and more then ten years of aikido :). As a kid, i did a lot of scale models of tanks and other military vehicles.

Lately I've been practicing kali (Mikey177 was with us for a while) but work has been very hectic so I'me been absent from practice.

I'm currently getting back into the one old hobbie that still intrigues me: caving. In fact our caving group is open to new applicants.

Anyone interested? :)

Numismatist since I was a teenager.
I wanted better specimens to pose with the Bersa,, but they're all in airtight cases that don't photograph well: the weather's too wet to risk bringing them out. I used a few nice culls instead :)

I also snorkel for seaweed surveys.
Setting up quadrats, logging... it's a thankless endeavor. ;)

Oh, so you are a "Bass I" in singing terms, that's where your ID "bass one" comes from. Excellent! I am a Bass II. All I ever do is sing "boom - boom" type background for the lead singer, who sings the melody. There are so very few melodies written for Basses ("Some Enchanted Evening " and "Sixteen Tons" come to mind, hardly anything else. Many melodies for Tenors and even Baritones. damn!)

We Basses have to stick together. "Old Man River...Dat Ol' Man river..."

Well, I wrote this in my July column (in a magazine for doctors and other non-finance people):
"First, some readers have emailed me asking : what local
stocks pay good cash dividends? Well, if cash dividends are what you want
(meaning that you have a need for current cash income) , I can recommend
four stocks: AMC (Alaska Milk Corp.) has, in the past couple of years,
been
maintaining a "cash-dividend yield" (the amount of cash dividends paid
divided by the stock price) of about 10% annually; PCOR (Petron) has been
paying about 7%; ATI (Asian Terminals Inc.) about 12%; and ICT
(International Container Terminal Services Inc.)about 8%. All of these
cash dividend payments are subject to 20% withholding tax, but that's OK
since you also pay that tax on the interest you earn in your savings
account or certificate of deposit so it's nothing new for you.

IN ADDITION to those cash dividend yields, it is likely that these four
stocks will give you "capital gains" too (profits from an increase in the
stock price itself) if you hold them for 1 or more years into the future.
These four are "moderate"-growth companies that are not fly-by-night: they
will still be in existence years from now.

And OF COURSE if you invest in stocks you should do it with the
intention of getting a higher return (cash dividend yield + capital gains)
than what you get from a certificate of deposit, because stocks involve
more risk, and higher risk must be compensated for by a higher return.
These stocks will yield more of a return than a certificate of
deposit.(But, if you are very risk-averse /a "segurista", or if you need a
lot of cash liquidity to pay imminent childrens' tuition bills etc., just
keep your money in a bank's certificate of deposit or "CD", which at this
time pays about 7.6%-8% annually if you roll it over every 90 days. Less
return, but less risk too and income every 90 days.)

There are also "growth stocks" such as JFC ("Jollibee Foods Corporation")
which pay very low cash dividends (less than 2% cash dividend yield in the
case of Jollibee), but that's also OK because growth stocks reinvest most
of their cash into themselves, and therefore grow fast, and their stock
price grows fast too. So you don't get much in cash dividends from JFC,
but
you get a lot of capital gains as the stock price rises (Jollibee stock
sold for about P16.50 just four months ago; now it is at about 24).
I
intend to buy Jollibee stock again if it drops to the range P19-P22. I
believe it will hit P30 within a year. JFC is expanding into the biggest
consumer market in the world: China....

Please tell me that isn't your St.Gaudens shown on the page!
Incredible specimen. All I have of strictly-US denominations are
frost Peace and BU Morgan dollars, for relevance to the Philippine setting.

As for barbarous-relics, I have a few modern RP CB proof issues (blechhh designs), and varous Reina Isabel II (1860's) and Rey Alfonso XII (1880's) peso coins --but these are only little better than G-4, up to maybe VG-8.

I can't afford an ultra high relief St Gauden's so I just make do with the picture. A good substitute are the new $50 denominated gold eagle bullion coins that use the original St Gaudens design and available in both proof and BU. The medal on top is not mine either. I have an 1868 Filipinas 4 Peso gold coin about VF that I got from my father who got it from my grandmother. I also have a 1977 5000 Piso gold coin with Macoy and Imelda on it that I never knew existed til I saw one here in the States and bought for just a little premium over spot gold.

Yes, an Isabellina 4P: a very good coin to have indeed.

IIRC, despite the date, your coin may have been minted as late as 1877. The scandal-plagued Queen had been deposed by a revolutionary junta in 1868, but the Manila Mint (Casa de Moneda de Manila) still had to fill in a real need for coins --so they used the last good date over and over, until Spain caught wind of it and ordered it ended. The Provisional Governemnt had come and gone -- the deposed Queen's son had already assumed the throne (to the assent of the Provisional Government) in 1874.

Alfonso XII's portrait only began appearing on gold and silver Philippine coins in 1880. Unlike his mother, he was massively popular, a good ruler and very sympathetic to Filipino rights -- but he died of TB in 1885. His wife Maria Cristina became Regent for their infant son, and under her ultra-conservative rule, Filipino rights and freedoms were reduced utterly, sparking the fire of Philippine Revolution.

Did I menton I was writing a book on this?
That's my other hobby. I write books as a 'personal exercise'
..not really meant for publication :)

We Basses have to stick together. "Old Man River...Dat Ol' Man river..."
______________________________________________

Ante: A lot of songs are for our kind, mostly from musicals - Some Enchanted Evening is a fave! So is Ol' man river, We kiss in a shadow/I Have Dreamed from King and I. I can sing all the songs by the lead male casts in South Pacific, King & I, Carousel, Oklahoma, Show Boat, Camelot, Ms Saigon, Les Miz...I could go on and on ;f. All these I have in either DVD, LD or CD! I Love Placido Domingo and Mario Lanza. There was a time when I could do Nessun Dorma and Be My Love. Did you know that Placido used to be a bass 2? Anything by Howard Keel is great for our vocal range. Also Gordon MacRae and Robert Goulet. Bass 1 and baritone is the same, meaning you can go for both bass and tenor. I grew up in a family who loves to listen to musicals and arias and I was trained in the classical voice by Ed Manguiat of UPSA.

Great to know we're in the same league.;a

Hi sorry but I only work with copper, brass, aluminum stock from those shops at T Mapua. I doubt they have specialty steels...

Yes, I thought about getting something like the G & G impact device, but I figured it would raise too many questions from security guards, especially at the airport. I was able to carry my unmodified E2e on a domestic flight without any hassles, but I doubt if they'd look to kindly on it if it had those sharp "teeth" at the end. At least the sample I posted looks a bit less intimidating, and its easy to explain that its a "safty device" so that hot air has room to escape from if the flashlight is ever activated tip down :)

The GG&G TID can actually be easily detached by its supplied Allen wrench (smallest of its kind I saw so far). I've never been questioned by mall guards about it. If frisked, I'd pull it out and switch it on (surreptitiously covering the teeth with one hand ;f ).

horge
08-30-2004, 18:52

They'd probably go in the nice black recharger-box
(the one with the switches and red power LED)
under that rather large black aluminum heat sink.

I'm guessing it's a trickle charger?

LexaDoig, can you make a shot timer? I've thought about it but medyo rusty na yung electronics knowledge ko. Hangang LM555 lang alam ko'ng pede mag timer...;f

LexaDoig
08-30-2004, 21:27
The batteries connect to the alligator clips. AA cells need to be placed in a battery holder first.

It's a fast charger, it charges my 2100mAh NiMH in about 90 minutes. The red LED indicates fast charge mode, when the battery is full the LED turns off and the charger switches to trickle charge mode.

As for the shot timer that's quite complex, well beyond my "hobbyist" knowledge... ;f (but I think I can implement that on a PC, a mic captures the sound)

Pio,

Better have a doctor check out those knees before you self-medicate.

That said, I must admit that my wife also put me on glucosamine. I've been taking Glucosamine sulfate (Viartril-S) for over two years because my wife says it is good for the joints, especially for active folks like us that use them a lot working out :)

After two years, so far no side effects (walang kokontra!). If glucosamine is good enough for Navy SEALs (http://www.arthritisinformation.net/Glucosamine/page1.htm), then just get your doctor's go-ahead to try it.

This is a paragraph from the link I posted. You can read the complete text via the hyperlink:

A 16-week double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Dr. Alan Philippi and Dr. Christopher Leffler of 34 Navy Seals and divers at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in Virginia showed that the participants experienced significant relief from knee pain after taking glucosamine and chondroitin.

Pio,

I wouldn't recommend running if your knees are starting to hurt. It would jar the joints more, might result in more injuries. Swimming is safer as it doesn't put additional stress on the joints. I bike a lot and it doesn't put as much stress on your knees, ankles, hips as much as running does. Why don't you try a road bike first, think mountain biking is a lot more streneous on the joints. :)

Running shoes : New Balnce, asics, mizuno
Hwag adidas or Nike! puro porma lang yun dali pa masira
Pero nagamit din ako ng adidas climacool, regalo kasi baka bugbugin ako pag di ko ginamit

I swim i bike and run pero sa running ako namayat ng husto

When you get stronger, then you can switch to running

Or walking, lower impact
Yan, ang exercise ni Lito Pible, power walking sa festival mall :)
Matanda na kasi hehe
When you get stronger, then makatakbo ka na rin

o kaya stair climbing( kaso boring yun )

Pero, dapat may kasamang diet yan
Less rice, bread and more water, more gulay and LEAN meat

Get a book about running, para you can start painlessly and easily
Ako kasi, hindi nag iisip, kaya ayan, parati may injury

Allegra
02-04-2005, 09:59
I've been reading a little on running ngayon
May program pala so if your out of shape, hindi ka ma injure
Puro walking lang for a few weeks then, walk /run alternately, may warm up pa at cool down
Ang maganda sa running , 30min lang a day 4x a week ang required for general fitness
If you run for 30 min 7x a week, you lose 1 lb a week ( as a newbie wag muna! )
As I said get a book muna for beginners, nandun ang program how to start running painlessly and injury free

Additional tips on losing weght:
Matagal magpapayat. So run for the sake of running.
If you keep on lookin at the weighing scale, madidisapoint ka lang, baka tumigil ka na
To make it enjoyable, isama mo ang iyong better half ( papayag yun if you buy her cool outfits and shoes ), or a few friends
Sarap tumakbo kasma barkada
Lack of time is not an excuse :) I run up to an 1hr and a half at 8pm minsan 9. Besides, 30min lang kailangan for min fitness

Eye Cutter

as in any endurance sports,it is imperative that you established a base/foundation for your fitness level.parang general conditioning na masanay yung katawan/muscles mo sa ganung activity.depende yan sa program mo,kung balak mo sa milo sa nov.,meron kang 9 mos. to train di ba,kaya dapat meron talaga program, so pwedeng 2 mos. sa base (long runs etc.) then slowly every month,i-gear mo yung training papunta sa nov.,patience din kasi hirap mag ensayo.nasan na ba yung sapatos ko hehehe......syanga pala,it is always better to undertrain than to overtrain.

Yes, that 5pm closing is significant. But it's a good idea for weekends.

So, you're a birdwatcher, Kristiansen? Very interesting. Birds are like magnificent little machines. A scientist once said that if someone called him a "birdbrain"", he would be pleased and take it as a compliment. The brainpower it takes to achieve and control flight is stupendous, not to mention their seitivity to the earth's magnetic field, the ability of African grey parrots to talk, and their origins as dinosaurs. I have a German brother-in-law and he is a bird-watcher too, has orgasms when he comes here to the Philippines.

Unfortunately, my association with birds has mainly been predatory - I have shot a lot of them. Cheers!

http://www.hunt101.com/img/250441.jpg

After four years of harsh sea duty, I'm back ashore for three years. Getting back to hitting the outdoors hard again. I signed up for the Rock and Roll Marathon in San Diego in June (my 2nd one!). Am also going to see if I can do some MTB races. I used to race for a local bike shop. They give me at cost discounts for my bike parts.

It all depends on how healthy I am of course. Kaya ingat lang muna at first. I have a pretty good aerobic base kasi I exercise regularly naman. So I just build on my endurance. My goal is to run 40 miles for my 40th birthday (Jan 2006). Kung hindi, maybe bike na lang for 40 miles :)

Referring back to that idea about a date at Starbuck's being maybe one way to have a "cheap" date , here are a few more "inexpensive date" ideas (do Filipinas fall for this?):

1) Natural scenery - yeah, a walk on the beach, in a forest, into a cave, whatever....

2) Sports - jogging together, tossing frisbees in a park, crap like that.....

3) Picnic - sandwiches and cheap stuff like that. And ants.

4) Historic Places and Buildings - go walk through Intramuros, San Augustine Cathedral, and boring things like that... well, some chicks are into culture and history

5) Meal/evening at your apartment/condo/home - cook spaghetti - or let her cook it- and play board games or watch a DVD. Thrills. You might get lucky.

6)Museums - admission prices are reasonable, but this is boring, man. You like Ft. Santiago? the Central Bank museum? Thrills. What kind of a girl is this, anyway?

7)Learn a New Skill together - learn card tricks, learn how to juggle (now THAT I have tried and is really fun!), learn how to make bird calls (see kristiansen). Or something more kinky.

8)Cultural events - music recitals, art exhibitions, guest lecturers, plays, y-a-w-n

9) Oh I'm out of ideas. Just find a quiet place and do it.

100 of course - go shooting together. but this ain't cheap!

It's been quite a while since I'm in in hibernation... but I'll try to come here more often.

Before I went into guns and IPSC shooting, I was an another amateur numismatist. I was heavily concentrating my research on Dos Mondos. Together with a Peruvian enthusiast, we set up a 'catalog' website for the Spanish Pillar Dollar. The site is offline now, but the content is still hosted at columnaria.com. I still have my collection. I went also to 'circulated' and contemporary world coin series -- just to fill up the time.

In between IPSC shooting, I also went into Surefire light collecting, but its waning now -- have already sold about a half of my shelf lights, while retaining tweaked-out customs for personal use.

I'm also an avid warship enthusiast -- way back decades ago when I was in high school. For a few 'months' I did some dioramas and plastic models, but my back and eyes gave up. Patient and 'endurance' you must have to do masterpieces. I have more than five books about the last major classic naval battles -- Falklands wars that is...

Absolute beauty. Love them Seiko dive watches. Been wearing a titanium model since 2001; keeps excellent time.

What's the history of that watch? The band seems to be one of those straps designed not to lose the watch should one of the watch's tabs fail.

Bro,
Lack of sleep finally landd me in the hospital a month ago
I had the mother of all migraines , di kayanin ng pain meds
Doctors were worried baka meningitis kasi I couldnt bend my neck
After a series of expensive tests mening., dengue etc was ruled out
It was just a @#$%^&^* 30t peso headache

Anyway , I had very little sleep
Too much alcohol , plus too much coffee ( 10 cups a day to keep me awake_)
In the evenings, todo ensayo sa swim run the whole week
Had a fever , ignored it
The next day, parang may nag bill drill sa ulo ko
Sabi ng doctor , that was the cause
Pero I told him, since college pa , ganyan na gawain ko
So the final diagnosis - old age hehehe

Seriously , I believe it's lack of sleep that did me in

With Allegra's post regarding running i tried it and liked it a lot.

I may return to Aikido if i can find a dojo close to sm bicutan(maybe get the third degree black belt :)I stopped at second deg dahil sa sawa).

Or maybe mixed martial arts. Saan ba meron malapit na gym na mixed martial arts sa bicutan?

It's not really a race, you can even walk if you want to, others will not care hehe
Runners ay may sariling mundo , they dont give a care sa ibang runners, all they care abut is their pain and PR's ( personal records )unless sa elite class ka
Anyway, baka they might give big discounts and freebies like they do sa mga races nila

Sa mga photography enthuisiasts out there:

Nakakuha ba kayo ng mga items sa Glorietta last week? Aksidente kong nadiskubri yung Photo show ng mga major suppliers sa tin, ang bababa ng presyo!

YUng Olympus e500 with two lenses nasa 52K lang; yung Dynax 5d na type ko nasa 41K lang, kit na rin. D50 nasa 51T ata. 70K+ na lang yung Dynax 7D. Yung pinagpipitagan kong Olympus c765/C770 nasa 13K lang dating halos 30T! ;P

Sayang, 'ala kong pera. Nakapaguwi na sana ko ng dSLR. P/S lang nabili ko para ke mrs. ;g

got some info of couple of exhibitors specializing on canons... baka gusto ninyo kunin yun contact details. they're all located in quiapo area.

Tinitignan ko nga yung Pentax DL na bibinaba sa >$600. Baka yun pwede na sanang mapilit makuha. Kaya lang 'ala e. Yung Minolta 5D kung di lang nagsara, masarap sanang patulan... ;g
