Are these a good value? I know they aren't in the same class as a c more or aimpoint, but I just want something to plink around with on my 625 and 686

a 625 is a smith revolver isnt it? BSA red dots are good, but i dont know if they would live up to that punishment.

I use one on my .44mag Desert Eagle that holds up fine. The dot will blink out for a few seconds if I use it on the 50.
Walmart sells them for lie 30 bucks or something. I to have wondered how good they are;)

I have one on my AR and for the price it is a lot of fun.
the MOA will cover an 10 inch circle at 100 yards so precision work is best left at under 30.
The dot itself is not as crisp as I would like, it appears to have jagged edges when I really focus on targets.
I have had no problems but the 5.56 recoil is not that of a .357.
For the price buy one and have some fun...

I have a couple. The paralax on them is pretty bad as well. If the dot is in one half of the sight it will be fine but in the other half it rapidly distorts off of POI.
One of mine has the flickering off issue as well but in it's defense it's been on 4 differant firarms including a DEagle .50 AE and been taken to a bench grinder to clearance for ejecting brass on my Glock's mount. I have since switched back to my JP Double Rings as they're more reliable and don't have paralax issues. ;)

Just got back from the range using my BSA Red Dot RD30 with the 50 cal. and it held zero perfect. It was blinking out before when I was shooting some really hot 50AE loads. The factory 50AE loads don't seem to bother it at all. At 25yds, the dot covers up most of the square in the target and at 20yds it covers all of the red part.
Hey , for $30 it's hard to beat.

IIRC, there are certain models of BSA red dots marked for use on a 22cal guns. I take it they may not be as sturdy as regular BSA's and may fail when using higher than 22cal ammo. Check the models carefully before buying. ;)

The sights designed for the .22 come with integral 3/8" mounts that would keep it from mounting on a 7/8" weaver or picatinny rail.
I have seen where many people who bought the 30mm as a cheapo-dot and liked it decided to "move up" to the 50mm only to find that the 50mm suffers badly from internal reflections.

I had a 42mm once, and much prefer the 30. Bigger isnt better with red dots.
