View Full Version : P-40 with a few problems

I just picked up a used (barely) P-40. I wasn`t looking for one (I had an XD-40 SCP on order) but the price was *really right* and before I knew it I was walking out the door with it. ;P I`ve shot a few Kahrs before so I sorta knew what to expect. At the range the accuracy was exceptional for a small gun but it has a few reliability issues. The mag release is too easy to activate and it had occasional failure to feed problems when feeding the first round from a fresh mag and the last round. Thanks to this forum I found out about the mag release fix. I`ll be calling Dottie on Tuesday. The other issue seems to be caused by the extractor. I found a little burr on it that could catch on the rim of the rounds (the cases showed signs of it too). I polished that off and polished the rest of the extractor, the breech face and feed ramp while I was at it. That seems to have done the trick. Before the slide used to hang up at times when released from slide lock, now it just slams the rounds in nice and smooth. :) I think it`s going to prove to be a great little carry gun. MadMarcus

Think you may have discovered why it was a trade-in with little use. However, seems you are on the right track to getting it all worked out.
I buy all guns used, and our P9 had seem some use, but has yet to have any problems feeding.
Tried the P40 at the range, and it's peppy. Funny thing though in that the front sight fell out (too loose).
Chose the P9 as it's more mild, cheaper ammo and more than adequate. Still, I've taken a hard look at the P40 time and time again since buying the P9. The P40 seems a great size:caliber package.
Overall, very pleased with the P9 and prefer the slightly smaller slide width, added round and recoil when compared to the P40. I like to 40 round in our HK more than the 9mm in our P9, but our HK is BIG compared to the Kahr. CCW is always a compromise.
Good luck with your fix.

I already have a KelTec P-11 in 9mm,that`s been a faithful servant for quite a few years so I didn`t really need another little 9mm. I recently traded a S&W 4053 8rd. DAO .40 ,basically S&W`s version of a Kahr. It was nice but lacked the grip ergonomics of the Kahrs and was just enough larger that it wasn`t much easier to carry than a larger gun. It got me thinking that a single stack DAO .40 that was smaller and lighter might be just the thing though. I think the P-40 might be just the ticket. I like it more all the time. :) MadMarcus
I have had my p40 since 2001 carry it in a Krammer IWB #3 has prety much replaced my other carry guns. Still carry my MK40 in a Pocket holster and a Blade-tec tuckable. (Probibly becase I had the holsters for the MK already if I had the Pocket and Tuckable holster for the P40 I would probibly not carry the MK.) I seldom carry my Glocks anymore, my Glock 19 has gone though hell and back with me but now seems to stay at home more often than not. The P40 is a great gun at a great size. Get it running 100% and it will serve you well.
