The beast crept closer. The man could hear it panting, but could not see the beast behind the brick wall. Without a sound he slid the HK pistol from the leather holster on his hip. He silently disengaged the safety with his right thumb as he brought the pistol up in front of him, arms extended.
The beast lunged. Up out of the darkness it sprang, all teeth and claws and hot breath, with a squeal like tires skidding on hot pavement. The man fired on instinct, his training taking over, his muscle motor movements on autopilot.
Thunder rang in his ears fifteen times in five seconds, and fifteen silver plated hollowpoint rounds entered the beast's body. The howling creature landed on the man, who rolled with the brunt of the impact. The dead body hit the pavement like a bag of wet kitty litter.
The man looked down, dazed, at the bleeding body of his son. He watched the fur retract into his son's pale skin, the fangs growing smaller, the eyes becoming the sky blue he had loved since the boy was a baby in his arms.
His voice failed him as he whispered, "It's finally over".
