i know the similaritys between the 10mm and the .40cal(same dia). i thought i saw a post were someone was saying they loaded .40cal ammo in their g20 and all was good. is this true? doesn't seem like the firing pin would reach the short .40. is it assumed that they were using a .40 barrel?

The best way to do this is with a .40S&W barrel. You can shoot .40S&W in a 10mm barrel but there are somethings that can get messed up. I believe that basically the extractor holds the round in place. I've never done this myself but there are people her who have. Never use .40S&W in a 10mm for a defense gun.

I've fired 40S&W through my 10mm G29 once. It will work but it's not recommended. The extractor keeps the .40 case close enough to the back of the slide for the firing pin to reach the primer. I was still stupid then and wanted to see for myself if it will work. I won't try it again though.

Not dumb--good question.
When I first get a 10mm gun, I try a number of 10mm brands and some Gold Dot .40s. That is the only time.
The idea is to see if in an emergency, I could use .40 if 10mm has run out.

Then again, some of the G20 shooters have done this for years.:)

Not a dumb question at all.

I was on another site dedicated to handloading and I came across a discussion about long loading 40 brass and using it in the 10mm platform. I have tried this a couple of times and it worked, but was not comfortable with the lack of bullet to case contact.

As far as firing factory 40: My concern is the bullet being set so far back in the chamber. The extractor claw is the only thing controlling head-spacing. The bullet travels "free" through the larger diameter area where casing would normally be before finding the lands of the rifling. On top of this, the bullet has to negotiate the ridge that is there to control the 10mm Auto length casing. These may be nothing concerns, but common sense tells me that it is not a good thing.

In a pinch it most certainly will work.

Ditto above.
I've run 20 rounds of .40 through my stock barrel.
Bought a KKM .40 conversion, shot about 2,000 through that so far. 100% reliable. Finaly ordered the 357sig barrel, will be here next week. Glocks best gun, get one while you can.

Is the 20 going away? Your "while you can" comment got me wondering. I hope they don't give up on the 10mm and .45acp frame. I don't have mine yet, but within 6-8 months that'll change. Incite or speculation?

Sorry to scare you like that!
Just a general bit of advice. I think the G-20 is one to keep for a lifetime and someday it probably will no longer be made. A few spare parts, a couple caliber conversions, a loading press and we can shoot off into the sunset.

good info and comments. thanks. nice to know it will work, however, when i first read that idea, all i could think of was the bullet having to travel through that "dead air" space before hitting the rifled part of the barrel, tumling, getting jammed and then. well, you know. (boom) i really like the .357sig round. zippy little target round. i'll have to look into a conv. barrel. ****, theres another reload round i'll have to set up for.

I was worried you had heard something that I hadn't. As much as I worry that the big-frame Glock's branch of the family tree might be allowed to wither and eventually be dropped, I just can't see it happening; thanks to the relatively inexpensive production methods. The R&D and the molds are bought and paid for, and the molds should last forever. There isn't a tremendous amount of machining that goes into the slide either. My only concern is they end up having to shift the resources of an injection machine to make small frames or, more likely, normal capacity mags for small frame Glocks if demand for them outruns current capacity. Once that condition corrects itself, G20/21 production would resume I think (hope).

I think a more likely scenario is when there becomes a gen 4 version the big frames won't get the improvements. I definitely don't want to miss out on one of the finest caliber/pistol match-ups ever.
