Sniping just got a whole lot more deadly with the Barrett
XM-109 sniper rifle, which marries improved range with the
firepower of an Apache helicopter.

to the best of my knowledge the 25mm munition used in this rifle isn't the same size or power as the round from the 25mm chaingun (Bradley, etc)

the 25m 'payload' rifle is basically a way to get the 25mm OICW-type grenade munitions further 'out there' with greater accuracy.

I'm not even sure the 25mm chaingun would fit inside the standard Barrett mag (the payload rifle uses the same size mag as the .50, with a spacer inside for the stubbier OICW 25mm munitions).

That would be correct. I saw a dummy round of the 25mm cannon round used in the Bushmaster and it was damn near as long as my forearm. The 25mm munition used in the Barrett is the same one they are putting in the OICW--they abandoned plans for the 20mm and decided to go to 25mm all around--plans were already on the boards for a payload rifle but like much of the OICW and related programs, it fell behind. They decided to put it in a platform that was already available--hence the Barrett. It, as you probably grasped, isn't designed for anti-personal. It was designed to replace the .50 BMG as an anti-material rifle.
