What's the word on S&W 1911's?

A friend of mine got one (For a price that will make you cry), I shot it. I want one.

I have one of the early models. Superb gun. Totally reliable, extremely accurate (1.2" at 25 yards), finish is nice with a bit of dehorning around the edges. I have the basic model, and a friend recently bought the "target model" with wood grips, nicer checkering on the front strap and adjustable rear sight -- all for about $715.

I did notice that my early model seems to be smoother and has a tighter slide to frame fit. But they both shoot half-inch groups at 10 yards.

The only thing S&W shortchanged was the trigger itself. Pull is fine, with crisp break. But the trigger itself on mine had a sloppy fit and a smith who disassembled my gun said the trigger bow is real crappy metal and there wasn't much he could do to tune it.

Very good gun for the money. I will take it over any Kimber, Springfield under $900.

As a basis for a custom, I'd probably go with a Colt new Rollmark, just because it will hold it's value better with that Horse on the slide.

Although I haven't shot one yet, I have found out that even as an FFL they won't let me buy their external extractor without going to their armorer's school. There aren't enough out there for me to do that, especially for such a simple fix. I'll get around to shooting one when it's back up and running and I run into the fellow at the range.

i just got mine. its soooo nice. mostest for da money you can get in a 1911 style pistol. 100 rounds sunday with zero problems. i am in love;3
