View Full Version : Gas! Arggghhh! 87 octane.

I just rode my bike after a few weeks of hurricane cleanup. So... I think I'll pop a 3rd gear wheelie, nope. Okayyy how about a 2nd gear wheelie, mmmm blip mmmmm. What the hell! Then I remembered that I filled the tank with lawnmower gas just prior to the hurricanes! Now I have to burn 250mi before I get my wheelie machine back. WAaaaaaaaah!

Didn't realize how much octane == fun.

You want to use the lowest octane fuel that does not cause detonation, and no higher.

I didn't hear anything different, just felt maybe 10% less power. I topped off the tank pretty quick so it's now a 60/40 mixture of 87 octane and 93 octane. My KTM manual says not to use less than 95 octane. Don't have that around here. Is the European octane the same as the American?

Now you've got me wondering. I was rejetting and when I ran the mixture leaner I noticed pinging. I wonder if that was all octane related. Maybe I should get some octane boost to try out and see if 93 is too low.

My Zuke DL1000 with >11:1 compression ratio, fuel injection (L-Twin) requires 87 octane. It runs ratty on anything higher.

I found some posts where it says Europe uses RON and America uses PON (average of RON and MON). So when my KTM manual says 95 octane, it is RON, which is equivalent to American 91 according to this chart:

As a side note. I bought some $3 octane booster, and I'm just lazy enough to spike my 4.8 gal tank (3.0 gals of 87 octane, 1.8 gals of 93 octane) with some to hopefully bring my octane into the nineties. This stuff claims a increase of "octane effect" by up to 3 "points".

Now I find out that "points" are like 0.1 RON. What the hell! Oh well, my next tank is going to be 91 octane.

3 points = .3 unfortunately

I finally dumped the tank and filled it with 93 (couldn't find 91). Wow what a difference! I will never ever ever do that to my motor again.

I gave it a nice $8/qt oil change, and it forgave me.

You can get Amsoil for around $4.50/qt. Tis all I run in bikes/trucks and even leaf blowers.

I had Amsoil in it. That was also $8/qt where I shopped. Hrm.. I think I'm getting ripped off! The stuff I just put in was Mobil MX4T.
