could some HK .45 owners provide some input? I held both over the weekend (range was closed didn't get to shoot either gun) and I found that the p220 fit my hand more naturally. this is not to say that the HK was a 'bad' fit, it just didn't mold to my hand the way the Sig did.
However, I was disappointed to find that the Sig is not as versatile as the HK, ie cannot be carried cocked and locked.
After some google time, and reading up on the desing of the HK USP it seems to be the better overall gun, at least on paper.
Does anyone here have experience with both? At present, I'm leaning toward the HK USP .45 full size.

Yup, got both a full size USP-45 and an older German made Sig P220. I love both of them and I can say that you're not going to go wrong with either one. I think the Sig lends tself a little better to CCW carry but the USP has several advantages the Sig doesn't. It has a higher 12 round capacity versus the 7-8 (depending on the magazine) rounds in the Sig, larger trigger guard for easy winter shooting, a recoil reduction system that works great, and it's a lot more versatile with all the configurations you can do to the USP.
The Sig is no slouch though and it's accuracy is on par with the USP. both of these guns BTW have been trading places for top honors as to what full size .45 has the best accuracy out of all my test subjects. It does have a lot better DA trigger and the SA trigger is nice as well. My USP has the match trigger installed and while it improved things a lot, the Sig is still a better trigger and that's a stock trigger on the Sig!
Both though have been 100% in the reliability department and I have no doubt that each one will hold up for many thousands of rounds and wear and tear of normal handling. I'm not sure which one would last longer being driven over, dragged behind a truck, frozen in ice, filled with sand and what not. I'm still a big believer in taking care of my weapons so I'm not about to pull some of that crazy crap with my guns!
All-in-all though, you aren't going to go wrong with either one.

thanks for the input.
i'm not too concerned with carry (concealed) for either weapon, i think the g32 will hold that position, mainly because it's smaller.
you are right about that Sig trigger pull, it was very smooth in both DA and SA, i was surprised by it.
still leaning HK at this point.

After looking and handling both for weeks I finally went with the HK because I liked the position of the mag release better than the Sig

The P220 is too big for my hand to shoot comfortably. The USP .45 fits me well as does my G30. I bought the G30 cause it's smaller for concealed carry and I like Glocks. But the USP .45 Compact I would have been fine with.
I bought a P220 before I did my USP 45. The 220 was a lemon from day one. After 4 months & almost 3000 rounds, I sold it & put the $$ towards my 1st USP & haven't looked back. Dead on accurate, easy to maintain & tough as nails!! Go w/ the HK ;)

If you would carry your USP .45 cocked and locked (I forget which variant that is) how much slack is in the trigger when you unlock the safety and prepare to take up the trigger to fire?

variant one (aka standard config) allows for cocked and locked.
i don't know the trigger force, i haven't picked mine up yet.

Cocked and locked both USPs I've shot have been about 5lb with a little takeup, similar to a 1911 but not quite THAT good. :)

I don't have the USP45, but the USP45Compact instead. I'll stick with my P220 as the primary piece. Why? Accuracy, known reliability, and it's down right prettier. The USP Compact turned out better than I expected but it ain't no SIG Sauer, that's for sure.
PS Mr. Murphy, how can a double-stack USP45 grip fit you much better than the single-stack P220 grip? Maybe you meant it the other way around? I have small-to-medium hands and I couldn't get a proper hand hold on the USPF, hence the USPC for me instead.

the p220 is a single stack grip? to me it felt the same as the USP in terms of the amount of hand it took to hold the gun. it was definitely larger than the 1911's i held. i did not like that skinny 1911 grip at all.
The only beef I have with my HK (45 Compact) is the excessive trigger slack. Its a keeper but considering a Sig too. Get the Benz and the Bimmer:cool:
